सूक्त ३३

एतायामोप गव्यन्त इन्द्रमस्माकं सु प्रमतिं वावृधाति। अनामृणः कुविदादस्य रायो गवां केतं परमावर्जते नः॥

etāyāmopa gavyanta indramasmākaṁ su pramatiṁ vāvṛdhāti | anāmṛṇaḥ kuvidādasya rāyo gavāṁ ketaṁ paramāvarjate naḥ ||

Come, fain for booty let us seek to Indra: yet more shall he increase his care that guides us. Will not the Indestructible endow us with perfect knowledge of this wealth, of cattle?

उपेदहं धनदामप्रतीतं जुष्टां न श्येनो वसतिं पतामि। इन्द्रं नमस्यन्नुपमेभिरर्कैर्यः स्तोतृभ्यो हव्यो अस्ति यामन्॥

upedahaṁ dhanadāmapratītaṁ juṣṭāṁ na śyeno vasatiṁ patāmi | indraṁ namasyannupamebhirarkairyaḥ stotṛbhyo havyo asti yāman ||

I fly to him invisible Wealth-giver as flies the falcon to his cherished eyrie, With fairest hymns of praise adoring Indra, whom those who laud him must invoke in battle.

नि सर्वसेन इषुधीँरसक्त समर्यो गा अजति यस्य वष्टि। चोष्कूयमाण इन्द्र भूरि वामं मा पणिर्भूरस्मदधि प्रवृद्ध॥

ni sarvasena iṣudhīrasakta samaryo gā ajati yasya vaṣṭi | coṣkūyamāṇa indra bhūri vāmaṁ mā paṇirbhūrasmadadhi pravṛddha ||

Mid all his host, he bindeth on the quiver he driveth cattle from what foe he pleaseth: Gathering up great store of riches, Indra. be thou no trafficker with us, most mighty.

वधीर्हि दस्युं धनिनं घनेनँ एकश्चरन्नुपशाकेभिरिन्द्र। धनोरधि विषुणक्ते व्यायन्नयज्वानः सनकाः प्रेतिमीयुः॥

vadhīrhi dasyuṁ dhaninaṁ ghanena ekaścarannupaśākebhirindra | dhanoradhi viṣuṇakte vyāyannayajvānaḥ sanakāḥ pretimīyuḥ ||

Thou slewest with thy bolt the wealthy Dasyu, alone, yet going with thy helpers, Indra! Far from the floor of heaven in all directions, the ancient riteless ones fled to destruction.

परा चिच्छीर्षा ववृजुस्त इन्द्रायज्वानो यज्वभिः स्पर्धमानाः। प्र यद्दिवो हरिवः स्थातरुग्र निरव्रताँ अधमो रोदस्योः॥

parā cicchīrṣā vavṛjusta indrāyajvāno yajvabhiḥ spardhamānāḥ | pra yaddivo harivaḥ sthātarugra niravratā adhamo rodasyoḥ ||

Fighting with pious worshippers, the riteless turned and fled, Indra! with averted faces. When thou, fierce Lord of the Bay Steeds, the Stayer, blewest from earth and heaven and sky the godless.

अयुयुत्सन्ननवद्यस्य सेनामयातयन्त क्षितयो नवग्वाः। वृषायुधो न वध्रयो निरष्टाः प्रवद्भिरिन्द्राच्चितयन्त आयन्॥

ayuyutsannanavadyasya senāmayātayanta kṣitayo navagvāḥ | vṛṣāyudho na vadhrayo niraṣṭāḥ pravadbhirindrāccitayanta āyan ||

They met in fight the army of the blameless. then the Navagvas put forth all their power. They, like emasculates with men contending, fled, conscious, by steep paths from Indra, scattered.

त्वमेतान्रुदतो जक्षतश्चायोधयो रजस इन्द्र पारे। अवादहो दिव आ दस्युमुच्चा प्र सुन्वतः स्तुवतः शंसमावः॥

tvametānrudato jakṣataścāyodhayo rajasa indra pāre | avādaho diva ā dasyumuccā pra sunvataḥ stuvataḥ śaṁsamāvaḥ ||

Whether they weep or laugh, thou hast o'erthrown them, O Indra, on the sky's extremest limit. The Dasyu thou hast burned from heaven, and welcomed the prayer of him who pours the juice and lauds thee.

चक्राणासः परीणहं पृथिव्या हिरण्येन मणिना शुम्भमानाः। न हिन्वानासस्तितिरुस्त इन्द्रं परि स्पशो अदधात्सूर्येण॥

cakrāṇāsaḥ parīṇahaṁ pṛthivyā hiraṇyena maṇinā śumbhamānāḥ | na hinvānāsastitirusta indraṁ pari spaśo adadhātsūryeṇa ||

Adorned with their array of gold and jewels, they o'er the earth a covering veil extended. Although they hastened, they o'ercame not Indra: their spies he compassed with the Sun of morning.

परि यदिन्द्र रोदसी उभे अबुभोजीर्महिना विश्वतः सीम्। अमन्यमानाँ अभि मन्यमानैर्निर्ब्रह्मभिरधमो दस्युमिन्द्र॥

pari yadindra rodasī ubhe abubhojīrmahinā viśvataḥ sīm | amanyamānā abhi manyamānairnirbrahmabhiradhamo dasyumindra ||

As thou enjoyest heaven and earth, O Indra, on every side surrounded with thy greatness, So thou with priests bast blown away the Dasyu, and those who worship not with those who worship.

न ये दिवः पृथिव्या अन्तमापुर्न मायाभिर्धनदां पर्यभूवन्। युजं वज्रं वृषभश्चक्र इन्द्रो निर्ज्योतिषा तमसो गा अदुक्षत्॥

na ye divaḥ pṛthivyā antamāpurna māyābhirdhanadāṁ paryabhūvan | yujaṁ vajraṁ vṛṣabhaścakra indro nirjyotiṣā tamaso gā adukṣat ||

They who pervaded earth's extremest limit subdued not with their charms the Wealth-bestower: Indra, the Bull, made his ally the thunder, and with its light milked cows from out the darkness.

अनु स्वधामक्षरन्नापो अस्यावर्धत मध्य आ नाव्यानाम्। सध्रीचीनेन मनसा तमिन्द्र ओजिष्ठेन हन्मनाहन्नभि द्यून्॥

anu svadhāmakṣarannāpo asyāvardhata madhya ā nāvyānām | sadhrīcīnena manasā tamindra ojiṣṭhena hanmanāhannabhi dyūn ||

The waters flowed according to their nature; he raid the navigable streams waxed mighty. Then Indra, with his spirit concentrated, smote him for ever with his strongest weapon.

न्याविध्यदिलीबिशस्य दृळ्हा वि शृङ्गिणमभिनच्छुष्णमिन्द्रः। यावत्तरो मघवन्यावदोजो वज्रेण शत्रुमवधीः पृतन्युम्॥

nyāvidhyadilībiśasya dṛḻhā vi śṛṅgiṇamabhinacchuṣṇamindraḥ | yāvattaro maghavanyāvadojo vajreṇa śatrumavadhīḥ pṛtanyum ||

Indra broke through Ilibisa's strong castles, and Suspa with his horn he cut to pieces: Thou, Maghavan, for all his might and swiftness, slewest thy fighting foeman with thy thunder

अभि सिध्मो अजिगादस्य शत्रून्वि तिग्मेन वृषभेणा पुरोऽभेत्। सं वज्रेणासृजद्वृत्रमिन्द्रः प्र स्वां मतिमतिरच्छाशदानः॥

abhi sidhmo ajigādasya śatrūnvi tigmena vṛṣabheṇā puro'bhet | saṁ vajreṇāsṛjadvṛtramindraḥ pra svāṁ matimatiracchāśadānaḥ ||

Fierce on his enemies fell Indra's weapon: with. his sharp bull he rent their forts in pieces. He with his thunderbolt dealt blows on Vrtra; and conquered, executing all his purpose.

आवः कुत्समिन्द्र यस्मिञ्चाकन्प्रावो युध्यन्तं वृषभं दशद्युम्। शफच्युतो रेणुर्नक्षत द्यामुच्छ्वैत्रेयो नृषाह्याय तस्थौ॥

āvaḥ kutsamindra yasmiñcākanprāvo yudhyantaṁ vṛṣabhaṁ daśadyum | śaphacyuto reṇurnakṣata dyāmucchvaitreyo nṛṣāhyāya tasthau ||

Indra, thou helpest Kutsa whom thou lovedst, and guardedst brave Dagadyu when he battled, The dust of trampling horses rose to heaven, and Svitri's son stood up again for conquest.

आवः शमं वृषभं तुग्र्यासु क्षेत्रजेषे मघवञ्छ्वित्र्यं गाम्। ज्योक्चिदत्र तस्थिवांसो अक्रञ्छत्रूयतामधरा वेदनाकः॥

āvaḥ śamaṁ vṛṣabhaṁ tugryāsu kṣetrajeṣe maghavañchvitryaṁ gām | jyokcidatra tasthivāṁso akrañchatrūyatāmadharā vedanākaḥ ||

Svitra's mild steer, O Maghavan thou helpest in combat for the land, mid Tugra's houses. Long stood they there before the task was ended: thou wast the master of the foemen's treasure.
