सूक्त २३

तीव्राः सोमास आ गह्याशीर्वन्तः सुता इमे। वायो तान्प्रस्थितान्पिब॥

tīvrāḥ somāsa ā gahyāśīrvantaḥ sutā ime | vāyo tānprasthitānpiba ||

STRONG are the Somas; come thou nigh; these juices have been mixt with milk: Drink, Vayu, the presented draughts.

उभा देवा दिविस्पृशेन्द्रवायू हवामहे। अस्य सोमस्य पीतये॥

ubhā devā divispṛśendravāyū havāmahe | asya somasya pītaye ||

Both Deities who touch the heaven, Indra and Vayu we invoke To drink of this our soma juice.

इन्द्रवायू मनोजुवा विप्रा हवन्त ऊतये। सहस्राक्षा धियस्पती॥

indravāyū manojuvā viprā havanta ūtaye | sahasrākṣā dhiyaspatī ||

The singers' for their aid, invoke Indra and Vayu, swift as mind, The thousand-eyed, the Lords of thought.

मित्रं वयं हवामहे वरुणं सोमपीतये। जज्ञाना पूतदक्षसा॥

mitraṁ vayaṁ havāmahe varuṇaṁ somapītaye | jajñānā pūtadakṣasā ||

Mitra and Varupa, renowned as Gods of consecrated might, We call to drink the Soma juice.

ऋतेन यावृतावृधावृतस्य ज्योतिषस्पती। ता मित्रावरुणा हुवे॥

ṛtena yāvṛtāvṛdhāvṛtasya jyotiṣaspatī | tā mitrāvaruṇā huve ||

Those who by Law uphold the Law, Lords of the shining light of Law, Mitra I call, and Varuna.

वरुणः प्राविता भुवन्मित्रो विश्वाभिरूतिभिः। करतां नः सुराधसः॥

varuṇaḥ prāvitā bhuvanmitro viśvābhirūtibhiḥ | karatāṁ naḥ surādhasaḥ ||

Let Varuna be our chief defence, let Mitra guard us with all aids Both make us rich exceedingly.

मरुत्वन्तं हवामह इन्द्रमा सोमपीतये। सजूर्गणेन तृम्पतु॥

marutvantaṁ havāmaha indramā somapītaye | sajūrgaṇena tṛmpatu ||

Indra, by Maruts girt, we call to drink the Soma juice: may he Sate him in union with his troop.

इन्द्रज्येष्ठा मरुद्गणा देवासः पूषरातयः। विश्वे मम श्रुता हवम्॥

indrajyeṣṭhā marudgaṇā devāsaḥ pūṣarātayaḥ | viśve mama śrutā havam ||

Gods, Marut hosts whom Indra leads, distributers of Pusan's gifts, Hearken ye all unto my cry.

हत वृत्रं सुदानव इन्द्रेण सहसा युजा। मा नो दुःशंस ईशत॥

hata vṛtraṁ sudānava indreṇa sahasā yujā | mā no duḥśaṁsa īśata ||

With conquering Indra for ally, strike Vrtra down, ye bounteous Gods Let not the wicked master us.

विश्वान्देवान्हवामहे मरुतः सोमपीतये। उग्रा हि पृश्निमातरः॥

viśvāndevānhavāmahe marutaḥ somapītaye | ugrā hi pṛśnimātaraḥ ||

We call the Universal Gods, and Maruts to the Soma draught, For passing strong are Prsni's Sons.

जयतामिव तन्यतुर्मरुतामेति धृष्णुया। यच्छुभं याथना नरः॥

jayatāmiva tanyaturmarutāmeti dhṛṣṇuyā | yacchubhaṁ yāthanā naraḥ ||

Fierce comes the Maruts' thundering voice, like that of conquerors, when ye go Forward to victory, O Men.

हस्काराद्विद्युतस्पर्यतो जाता अवन्तु नः। मरुतो मृळयन्तु नः॥

haskārādvidyutasparyato jātā avantu naḥ | maruto mṛḻayantu naḥ ||

Born of the laughing lightning. may the Maruts guard us everywhere May they be gracious unto Us.

आ पूषञ्चित्रबर्हिषमाघृणे धरुणं दिवः। आजा नष्टं यथा पशुम्॥

ā pūṣañcitrabarhiṣamāghṛṇe dharuṇaṁ divaḥ | ājā naṣṭaṁ yathā paśum ||

Like some lost animal, drive to us, bright Pusan, him who bears up heaven, Resting on many-coloured grass.

पूषा राजानमाघृणिरपगूळ्हं गुहा हितम्। अविन्दच्चित्रबर्हिषम्॥

pūṣā rājānamāghṛṇirapagūḻhaṁ guhā hitam | avindaccitrabarhiṣam ||

Pusan the Bright has found the King, concealed and bidden in a cave, Who rests on grass of many hues.

उतो स मह्यमिन्दुभिः षड्युक्ताँ अनुसेषिधत्। गोभिर्यवं न चर्कृषत्॥

uto sa mahyamindubhiḥ ṣaḍyuktā anuseṣidhat | gobhiryavaṁ na carkṛṣat ||

And may he. duly bring to me the six bound closely, through these drops, As one who ploughs with steers brings corn.

अम्बयो यन्त्यध्वभिर्जामयो अध्वरीयताम्। पृञ्चतीर्मधुना पयः॥

ambayo yantyadhvabhirjāmayo adhvarīyatām | pṛñcatīrmadhunā payaḥ ||

Along their paths the Mothers go, Sisters of priestly ministrants, Mingling their sweetness with the milk.

अमूर्या उप सूर्ये याभिर्वा सूर्यः सह। ता नो हिन्वन्त्वध्वरम्॥

amūryā upa sūrye yābhirvā sūryaḥ saha | tā no hinvantvadhvaram ||

May Waters gathered near the Sun, and those wherewith the Sun is joined, Speed forth this sacrifice of ours.

अपो देवीरुप ह्वये यत्र गावः पिबन्ति नः। सिन्धुभ्यः कर्त्वं हविः॥

apo devīrupa hvaye yatra gāvaḥ pibanti naḥ | sindhubhyaḥ kartvaṁ haviḥ ||

I call the Waters, Goddesses, wherein our cattle quench their thirst; Oblations to the Streams be given.

अप्स्वन्तरमृतमप्सु भेषजमपामुत प्रशस्तये। देवा भवत वाजिनः॥

apsvantaramṛtamapsu bheṣajamapāmuta praśastaye | devā bhavata vājinaḥ ||

Amrit is in the Waters in the Waters there is healing balm Be swift, ye Gods, to give them praise.

अप्सु मे सोमो अब्रवीदन्तर्विश्वानि भेषजा। अग्निं च विश्वशम्भुवमापश्च विश्वभेषजीः॥

apsu me somo abravīdantarviśvāni bheṣajā | agniṁ ca viśvaśambhuvamāpaśca viśvabheṣajīḥ ||

Within the Waters-Soma thus hath told me-dwell all balms that heal, And Agni, he who blesseth all. The Waters hold all medicines.

आपः पृणीत भेषजं वरूथं तन्वे मम। ज्योक्च सूर्यं दृशे॥

āpaḥ pṛṇīta bheṣajaṁ varūthaṁ tanve mama | jyokca sūryaṁ dṛśe ||

O Waters, teem with medicine to keep my body safe from harm, So that I long may see the Sun.

इदमापः प्र वहत यत्किं च दुरितं मयि। यद्वाहमभिदुद्रोह यद्वा शेप उतानृतम्॥

idamāpaḥ pra vahata yatkiṁ ca duritaṁ mayi | yadvāhamabhidudroha yadvā śepa utānṛtam ||

Whatever sin is found in me, whatever evil I have wrought. If I have lied or falsely sworn, Waters, remove it far from me.

आपो अद्यान्वचारिषं रसेन समगस्महि। पयस्वानग्न आ गहि तं मा सं सृज वर्चसा॥

āpo adyānvacāriṣaṁ rasena samagasmahi | payasvānagna ā gahi taṁ mā saṁ sṛja varcasā ||

The Waters I this day have sought, and to their moisture have we come: O Agni, rich in milk, come thou, and with thy splendour cover me.

सं माग्ने वर्चसा सृज सं प्रजया समायुषा। विद्युर्मे अस्य देवा इन्द्रो विद्यात्सह ऋषिभिः॥

saṁ māgne varcasā sṛja saṁ prajayā samāyuṣā | vidyurme asya devā indro vidyātsaha ṛṣibhiḥ ||

Fill me with splendour, Agni; give offspring and length of days; the Gods Shall know me even as I am, and Indra with the Rsis, know.
