सूक्त ४७

स्वादुष्किलायं मधुमाँ उतायं तीव्रः किलायं रसवाँ उतायम्। उतो न्वस्य पपिवांसमिन्द्रं न कश्चन सहत आहवेषु॥

svāduṣkilāyaṁ madhumā utāyaṁ tīvraḥ kilāyaṁ rasavā utāyam | uto nvasya papivāṁsamindraṁ na kaścana sahata āhaveṣu ||

YEA, this is good to taste and full of. sweetness, verily it is strong and rich in flavour. No one may conquer Indra in the battle when he hath drunken of the draught we offer.

अयं स्वादुरिह मदिष्ठ आस यस्येन्द्रो वृत्रहत्ये ममाद। पुरूणि यश्च्यौत्ना शम्बरस्य वि नवतिं नव च देह्यो हन्॥

ayaṁ svāduriha madiṣṭha āsa yasyendro vṛtrahatye mamāda | purūṇi yaścyautnā śambarasya vi navatiṁ nava ca dehyo han ||

This sweet juice here had mightiest power to gladden: it boldened Indra when he siaughtered Vrtra, When he defeated Sambara's many onslaughts, and battered down his nineand ninety ramparts.

अयं मे पीत उदियर्ति वाचमयं मनीषामुशतीमजीगः। अयं षळुर्वीरमिमीत धीरो न याभ्यो भुवनं कच्चनारे॥

ayaṁ me pīta udiyarti vācamayaṁ manīṣāmuśatīmajīgaḥ | ayaṁ ṣaḻurvīramimīta dhīro na yābhyo bhuvanaṁ kaccanāre ||

This stirreth up my voice when I have drunk it: this hath aroused from sleep my yearning spirit. This Sage hath measured out the six expanses from which no single creature is excluded.

अयं स यो वरिमाणं पृथिव्या वर्ष्माणं दिवो अकृणोदयं सः। अयं पीयूषं तिसृषु प्रवत्सु सोमो दाधारोर्वन्तरिक्षम्॥

ayaṁ sa yo varimāṇaṁ pṛthivyā varṣmāṇaṁ divo akṛṇodayaṁ saḥ | ayaṁ pīyūṣaṁ tisṛṣu pravatsu somo dādhārorvantarikṣam ||

This, even this, is he who hath created the breadth of earth, the lofty height of heaven. He formed the nectar in three headlong rivers. Soma supports the wide mid-air above us.

अयं विदच्चित्रदृशीकमर्णः शुक्रसद्मनामुषसामनीके। अयं महान्महता स्कम्भनेनोद्द्यामस्तभ्नाद्वृषभो मरुत्वान्॥

ayaṁ vidaccitradṛśīkamarṇaḥ śukrasadmanāmuṣasāmanīke | ayaṁ mahānmahatā skambhanenoddyāmastabhnādvṛṣabho marutvān ||

He found the wavy sea of brilliant colours in forefront of the Dawns who dwell in brightness. This Mighty One, the Steer begirt by Maruts, hath propped the heavens up with a mighty pillar.

धृषत्पिब कलशे सोममिन्द्र वृत्रहा शूर समरे वसूनाम्। माध्यंदिने सवन आ वृषस्व रयिस्थानो रयिमस्मासु धेहि॥

dhṛṣatpiba kalaśe somamindra vṛtrahā śūra samare vasūnām | mādhyaṁdine savana ā vṛṣasva rayisthāno rayimasmāsu dhehi ||

Drink Soma boldly from the beaker, Indra, in war for treasures, Hero, Vrtra-slayer! Fill thyself full at the mid-day libation, and give us wealth, thou Treasury of riches.

इन्द्र प्र णः पुरएतेव पश्य प्र नो नय प्रतरं वस्यो अच्छ। भवा सुपारो अतिपारयो नो भवा सुनीतिरुत वामनीतिः॥

indra pra ṇaḥ puraeteva paśya pra no naya prataraṁ vasyo accha | bhavā supāro atipārayo no bhavā sunītiruta vāmanītiḥ ||

Look out for us, O Indra, as our Leader, and guide us on to gain yet goodlier treasure. Excellent Guardian, bear us well through peril, and lead us on to wealth with careful guidance.

उरुं नो लोकमनु नेषि विद्वान्स्वर्वज्ज्योतिरभयं स्वस्ति। ऋष्वा त इन्द्र स्थविरस्य बाहू उप स्थेयाम शरणा बृहन्ता॥

uruṁ no lokamanu neṣi vidvānsvarvajjyotirabhayaṁ svasti | ṛṣvā ta indra sthavirasya bāhū upa stheyāma śaraṇā bṛhantā ||

Lead us to ample room, O thou who knowest, to happiness, security, and sunlight. High, Indra, are the arms of thee the Mighty: may we betake. us to their lofty shelter.

वरिष्ठे न इन्द्र वन्धुरे धा वहिष्ठयोः शतावन्नश्वयोरा। इषमा वक्षीषां वर्षिष्ठां मा नस्तारीन्मघवन्रायो अर्यः॥

variṣṭhe na indra vandhure dhā vahiṣṭhayoḥ śatāvannaśvayorā | iṣamā vakṣīṣāṁ varṣiṣṭhāṁ mā nastārīnmaghavanrāyo aryaḥ ||

Set us on widest chariot-seat, O Indra, with two steeds best to draw, O Lord of Hundreds! Bring us the best among all sorts of viands: let not the foe's wealth, Maghavan, subdue us.

इन्द्र मृळ मह्यं जीवातुमिच्छ चोदय धियमयसो न धाराम्। यत्किं चाहं त्वायुरिदं वदामि तज्जुषस्व कृधि मा देववन्तम्॥

indra mṛḻa mahyaṁ jīvātumiccha codaya dhiyamayaso na dhārām | yatkiṁ cāhaṁ tvāyuridaṁ vadāmi tajjuṣasva kṛdhi mā devavantam ||

Be gracious, Indra, let my days be lengthened: sharpen my thought as 'twere a blade of iron Approve whatever words I speak, dependent on thee, and grant me thy divine protection.

त्रातारमिन्द्रमवितारमिन्द्रं हवेहवे सुहवं शूरमिन्द्रम्। ह्वयामि शक्रं पुरुहूतमिन्द्रं स्वस्ति नो मघवा धात्विन्द्रः॥

trātāramindramavitāramindraṁ havehave suhavaṁ śūramindram | hvayāmi śakraṁ puruhūtamindraṁ svasti no maghavā dhātvindraḥ ||

Indra the Rescuer, Indra the Helper, Hero who listens at each invocation, Sakra I call, Indra invoked of many. May Indra Maghavan prosper and bless us.

इन्द्रः सुत्रामा स्ववाँ अवोभिः सुमृळीको भवतु विश्ववेदाः। बाधतां द्वेषो अभयं कृणोतु सुवीर्यस्य पतयः स्याम॥

indraḥ sutrāmā svavā avobhiḥ sumṛḻīko bhavatu viśvavedāḥ | bādhatāṁ dveṣo abhayaṁ kṛṇotu suvīryasya patayaḥ syāma ||

May helpful Indra as our good Protector, Lord of all treasures, favour us with succour, Baffle our foes, and give us rest and safety, and may we be the lords of hero vigour.

तस्य वयं सुमतौ यज्ञियस्यापि भद्रे सौमनसे स्याम। स सुत्रामा स्ववाँ इन्द्रो अस्मे आराच्चिद्द्वेषः सनुतर्युयोतु॥

tasya vayaṁ sumatau yajñiyasyāpi bhadre saumanase syāma | sa sutrāmā svavā indro asme ārācciddveṣaḥ sanutaryuyotu ||

May we enjoy the grace of him the Holy, yea, may we dwell in his auspicious favour. May helpful Indra as our good Preserver drive from us, even from afar, our foemen.

अव त्वे इन्द्र प्रवतो नोर्मिर्गिरो ब्रह्माणि नियुतो धवन्ते। उरू न राधः सवना पुरूण्यपो गा वज्रिन्युवसे समिन्दून्॥

ava tve indra pravato normirgiro brahmāṇi niyuto dhavante | urū na rādhaḥ savanā purūṇyapo gā vajrinyuvase samindūn ||

Like rivers rushing down a slope, O Indra, to thee haste songs and prayers and linked verses. Thou gatherest, Thunderer! like widespread bounty, kine, water, drops, and manifold libations.

क ईं स्तवत्कः पृणात्को यजाते यदुग्रमिन्मघवा विश्वहावेत्। पादाविव प्रहरन्नन्यमन्यं कृणोति पूर्वमपरं शचीभिः॥

ka īṁ stavatkaḥ pṛṇātko yajāte yadugraminmaghavā viśvahāvet | pādāviva praharannanyamanyaṁ kṛṇoti pūrvamaparaṁ śacībhiḥ ||

Who lauds him, satisfies him, pays him worship? E'en the rich noble still hath found him mighty. With power, as when one moves his feet alternate, he makes the last precede, the foremost follow.

शृण्वे वीर उग्रमुग्रं दमायन्नन्यमन्यमतिनेनीयमानः। एधमानद्विळुभयस्य राजा चोष्कूयते विश इन्द्रो मनुष्यान्॥

śṛṇve vīra ugramugraṁ damāyannanyamanyamatinenīyamānaḥ | edhamānadviḻubhayasya rājā coṣkūyate viśa indro manuṣyān ||

Famed is the Hero as each strong man's tamer, ever advancing one and then another. King of both worlds, hating the high and haughty, Indra protects the men who are his people.

परा पूर्वेषां सख्या वृणक्ति वितर्तुराणो अपरेभिरेति। अनानुभूतीरवधून्वानः पूर्वीरिन्द्रः शरदस्तर्तरीति॥

parā pūrveṣāṁ sakhyā vṛṇakti vitarturāṇo aparebhireti | anānubhūtīravadhūnvānaḥ pūrvīrindraḥ śaradastartarīti ||

He loves no more the men he loved aforetime: he turns and moves away allied with others. Rejecting those who disregard his worship, Indra victorious lives through many autumns.

रूपंरूपं प्रतिरूपो बभूव तदस्य रूपं प्रतिचक्षणाय। इन्द्रो मायाभिः पुरुरूप ईयते युक्ता ह्यस्य हरयः शता दश॥

rūpaṁrūpaṁ pratirūpo babhūva tadasya rūpaṁ praticakṣaṇāya | indro māyābhiḥ pururūpa īyate yuktā hyasya harayaḥ śatā daśa ||

In every figure he hath been the mode: this is his only form for us to look on. Indra moves multiform by his illusions; for his Bay Steeds are yoked, ten times a hundred.

युजानो हरिता रथे भूरि त्वष्टेह राजति। को विश्वाहा द्विषतः पक्ष आसत उतासीनेषु सूरिषु॥

yujāno haritā rathe bhūri tvaṣṭeha rājati | ko viśvāhā dviṣataḥ pakṣa āsata utāsīneṣu sūriṣu ||

Here Tvastar, yoking to the car the Bay Steeds, hath extended sway. Who will for ever stand upon the foeman's side, even when our princes sit at ease?

अगव्यूति क्षेत्रमागन्म देवा उर्वी सती भूमिरंहूरणाभूत्। बृहस्पते प्र चिकित्सा गविष्टावित्था सते जरित्र इन्द्र पन्थाम्॥

agavyūti kṣetramāganma devā urvī satī bhūmiraṁhūraṇābhūt | bṛhaspate pra cikitsā gaviṣṭāvitthā sate jaritra indra panthām ||

Gods, we have reached a country void of pasture the land, though spacious, was too small to hold us. Brhaspati, provide in war for cattle; find a path, Indra, for this faithful singer.

दिवेदिवे सदृशीरन्यमर्धं कृष्णा असेधदप सद्मनो जाः। अहन्दासा वृषभो वस्नयन्तोदव्रजे वर्चिनं शम्बरं च॥

divedive sadṛśīranyamardhaṁ kṛṣṇā asedhadapa sadmano jāḥ | ahandāsā vṛṣabho vasnayantodavraje varcinaṁ śambaraṁ ca ||

Day after day far from their seat he drove them, alike, from place to place, those darksome creatures. The Hero slew the meanly-huckstering Dasas, Varcin and Sambara, where the waters gather.

प्रस्तोक इन्नु राधसस्त इन्द्र दश कोशयीर्दश वाजिनोऽदात्। दिवोदासादतिथिग्वस्य राधः शाम्बरं वसु प्रत्यग्रभीष्म॥

prastoka innu rādhasasta indra daśa kośayīrdaśa vājino'dāt | divodāsādatithigvasya rādhaḥ śāmbaraṁ vasu pratyagrabhīṣma ||

Out of thy bounty, Indra, hath Prastoka bestowed ten coffers and ten mettled horses. We have received in turn from Divodasa Sambara's wealth, the gift of Atithigva.

दशाश्वान्दश कोशान्दश वस्त्राधिभोजना। दशो हिरण्यपिण्डान्दिवोदासादसानिषम्॥

daśāśvāndaśa kośāndaśa vastrādhibhojanā | daśo hiraṇyapiṇḍāndivodāsādasāniṣam ||

Ten horses and ten treasure-chests, ten garments as an added gift, These and ten lumps of gold have I received from Divodasa's hand.

दश रथान्प्रष्टिमतः शतं गा अथर्वभ्यः। अश्वथः पायवेऽदात्॥

daśa rathānpraṣṭimataḥ śataṁ gā atharvabhyaḥ | aśvathaḥ pāyave'dāt ||

Ten cars with extra steed to each, for the Atharvans hundred cows, Hath Asvatha to Payu given.

महि राधो विश्वजन्यं दधानान्भरद्वाजान्सार्ञ्जयो अभ्ययष्ट॥

mahi rādho viśvajanyaṁ dadhānānbharadvājānsārñjayo abhyayaṣṭa ||

Thus Srnjaya's son honoured the Bharadvajas, recipients of all noble gifts and bounty.

वनस्पते वीड्वङ्गो हि भूया अस्मत्सखा प्रतरणः सुवीरः। गोभिः संनद्धो असि वीळयस्वास्थाता ते जयतु जेत्वानि॥

vanaspate vīḍvaṅgo hi bhūyā asmatsakhā prataraṇaḥ suvīraḥ | gobhiḥ saṁnaddho asi vīḻayasvāsthātā te jayatu jetvāni ||

Lord of the wood, be firm and strong in body: be, bearing us, a brave victorious hero Show forth thy strength, compact with straps of leather, and let thy rider win all spoils of battle.

दिवस्पृथिव्याः पर्योज उद्भृतं वनस्पतिभ्यः पर्याभृतं सहः। अपामोज्मानं परि गोभिरावृतमिन्द्रस्य वज्रं हविषा रथं यज॥

divaspṛthivyāḥ paryoja udbhṛtaṁ vanaspatibhyaḥ paryābhṛtaṁ sahaḥ | apāmojmānaṁ pari gobhirāvṛtamindrasya vajraṁ haviṣā rathaṁ yaja ||

Its mighty strength was borrowed from the heaven and earth: its conquering force was brought from sovrans of the wood. Honour with holy gifts the Car like Indra's bolt, the Car bound round with straps, the vigour of the floods.

इन्द्रस्य वज्रो मरुतामनीकं मित्रस्य गर्भो वरुणस्य नाभिः। सेमां नो हव्यदातिं जुषाणो देव रथ प्रति हव्या गृभाय॥

indrasya vajro marutāmanīkaṁ mitrasya garbho varuṇasya nābhiḥ | semāṁ no havyadātiṁ juṣāṇo deva ratha prati havyā gṛbhāya ||

Thou Bolt of Indra, Vanguard of the Maruts, close knit to Varuna and Child of Mitra,- As such, accepting gifts which here we offer, receive, O Godlike Chariot, these oblations.

उप श्वासय पृथिवीमुत द्यां पुरुत्रा ते मनुतां विष्ठितं जगत्। स दुन्दुभे सजूरिन्द्रेण देवैर्दूराद्दवीयो अप सेध शत्रून्॥

upa śvāsaya pṛthivīmuta dyāṁ purutrā te manutāṁ viṣṭhitaṁ jagat | sa dundubhe sajūrindreṇa devairdūrāddavīyo apa sedha śatrūn ||

Send forth thy voice aloud through earth and heaven, and let the world in all its breadth regard thee; O Drum, accordant with the Gods and Indra, drive thou afar, yea, very far, our foemen.

आ क्रन्दय बलमोजो न आ धा निः ष्टनिहि दुरिता बाधमानः। अप प्रोथ दुन्दुभे दुच्छुना इत इन्द्रस्य मुष्टिरसि वीळयस्व॥

ā krandaya balamojo na ā dhā niḥ ṣṭanihi duritā bādhamānaḥ | apa protha dundubhe ducchunā ita indrasya muṣṭirasi vīḻayasva ||

Thunder out strength and fill us full of vigour: yea, thunder forth and drive away all dangers. Drive hence, O War-drum, drive away misfortune: thou art the Fist of Indra: show thy firmness.

आमूरज प्रत्यावर्तयेमाः केतुमद्दुन्दुभिर्वावदीति। समश्वपर्णाश्चरन्ति नो नरोऽस्माकमिन्द्र रथिनो जयन्तु॥

āmūraja pratyāvartayemāḥ ketumaddundubhirvāvadīti | samaśvaparṇāścaranti no naro'smākamindra rathino jayantu ||

Drive hither those, and these again bring hither: the War-drum speaks aloud as battle's signal. Our heroes, winged with horses, come together. Let our car-warriors, Indra, be triumphant.
