सूक्त १२२

प्र वः पान्तं रघुमन्यवोऽन्धो यज्ञं रुद्राय मीळ्हुषे भरध्वम्। दिवो अस्तोष्यसुरस्य वीरैरिषुध्येव मरुतो रोदस्योः॥

pra vaḥ pāntaṁ raghumanyavo'ndho yajñaṁ rudrāya mīḻhuṣe bharadhvam | divo astoṣyasurasya vīrairiṣudhyeva maruto rodasyoḥ ||

SAY, bringing sacrifice to bounteous Rudra, This juice for drink to you whose wrath is fleeting! With Dyaus the Asura's Heroes I have lauded the Maruts as with prayer to Earth and Heaven.

पत्नीव पूर्वहूतिं वावृधध्या उषासानक्ता पुरुधा विदाने। स्तरीर्नात्कं व्युतं वसाना सूर्यस्य श्रिया सुदृशी हिरण्यैः॥

patnīva pūrvahūtiṁ vāvṛdhadhyā uṣāsānaktā purudhā vidāne | starīrnātkaṁ vyutaṁ vasānā sūryasya śriyā sudṛśī hiraṇyaiḥ ||

Strong to exalt the early invocation are Night and Dawn who show with varied aspect. The Barren clothes her in wide-woven raiment, and fair Morn shines with Surya's golden splendour.

ममत्तु नः परिज्मा वसर्हा ममत्तु वातो अपां वृषण्वान्। शिशीतमिन्द्रापर्वता युवं नस्तन्नो विश्वे वरिवस्यन्तु देवाः॥

mamattu naḥ parijmā vasarhā mamattu vāto apāṁ vṛṣaṇvān | śiśītamindrāparvatā yuvaṁ nastanno viśve varivasyantu devāḥ ||

Cheer us the Roamer round, who strikes at morning, the Wind delight us, pourer forth of waters! Sharpen our wits, O Parvata and Indra. May all the Gods vouchsafe to us this favour.

उत त्या मे यशसा श्वेतनायै व्यन्ता पान्तौशिजो हुवध्यै। प्र वो नपातमपां कृणुध्वं प्र मातरा रास्पिनस्यायोः॥

uta tyā me yaśasā śvetanāyai vyantā pāntauśijo huvadhyai | pra vo napātamapāṁ kṛṇudhvaṁ pra mātarā rāspinasyāyoḥ ||

And Ausija shall call for me that famous Pair who enjoy and drink, who come to brighten. Set ye the Offspring of the Floods before you; both Mothers of the Living One who beameth.

आ वो रुवण्युमौशिजो हुवध्यै घोषेव शंसमर्जुनस्य नंशे। प्र वः पूष्णे दावन आँ अच्छा वोचेय वसुतातिमग्नेः॥

ā vo ruvaṇyumauśijo huvadhyai ghoṣeva śaṁsamarjunasya naṁśe | pra vaḥ pūṣṇe dāvana ā acchā voceya vasutātimagneḥ ||

For you shall Ausija call him who thunders, as, to win Arjuna's assent, cried Ghosa. I will invoke, that Pusan may be bounteous to you, the rich munificence of Agni.

श्रुतं मे मित्रावरुणा हवेमोत श्रुतं सदने विश्वतः सीम्। श्रोतु नः श्रोतुरातिः सुश्रोतुः सुक्षेत्रा सिन्धुरद्भिः॥

śrutaṁ me mitrāvaruṇā havemota śrutaṁ sadane viśvataḥ sīm | śrotu naḥ śroturātiḥ suśrotuḥ sukṣetrā sindhuradbhiḥ ||

Hear, Mitra-Varuna, these mine invocations, hear them from all men in the hall of worship. Giver of famous gifts, kind hearer, Sindhu who gives fair fields, listen with all his waters 1

स्तुषे सा वां वरुण मित्र रातिर्गवां शता पृक्षयामेषु पज्रे। श्रुतरथे प्रियरथे दधानाः सद्यः पुष्टिं निरुन्धानासो अग्मन्॥

stuṣe sā vāṁ varuṇa mitra rātirgavāṁ śatā pṛkṣayāmeṣu pajre | śrutarathe priyarathe dadhānāḥ sadyaḥ puṣṭiṁ nirundhānāso agman ||

Praised, Mitra, Varuna! is your gift, a hundred cows to the Prksayamas and the Pajra. Presented by car-famous Priyaratha, supplying nourishment, they came directly.

अस्य स्तुषे महिमघस्य राधः सचा सनेम नहुषः सुवीराः। जनो यः पज्रेभ्यो वाजिनीवानश्वावतो रथिनो मह्यं सूरिः॥

asya stuṣe mahimaghasya rādhaḥ sacā sanema nahuṣaḥ suvīrāḥ | jano yaḥ pajrebhyo vājinīvānaśvāvato rathino mahyaṁ sūriḥ ||

Praised is the gift of him the very wealthy: may we enjoy it, men with hero children: His who hath many gifts to give the Pajras, a chief who makes me rich in cars and horses.

जनो यो मित्रावरुणावभिध्रुगपो न वां सुनोत्यक्ष्णयाध्रुक्। स्वयं स यक्ष्मं हृदये नि धत्त आप यदीं होत्राभिरृतावा॥

jano yo mitrāvaruṇāvabhidhrugapo na vāṁ sunotyakṣṇayādhruk | svayaṁ sa yakṣmaṁ hṛdaye ni dhatta āpa yadīṁ hotrābhirṛtāvā ||

The folk, O Mitra-Varuna, who hate you, who sinfully hating pour you no libations, Lay in their hearts, themselves, a wasting sickness, whereas the righteous gaineth all by worship.

स व्राधतो नहुषो दंसुजूतः शर्धस्तरो नरां गूर्तश्रवाः। विसृष्टरातिर्याति बाळ्हसृत्वा विश्वासु पृत्सु सदमिच्छूरः॥

sa vrādhato nahuṣo daṁsujūtaḥ śardhastaro narāṁ gūrtaśravāḥ | visṛṣṭarātiryāti bāḻhasṛtvā viśvāsu pṛtsu sadamicchūraḥ ||

That man, most puissant, wondrously urged onward, famed among heroes, liberal in giving, Moveth a warrior, evermore undaunted in all encounters even with the mighty.

अध ग्मन्ता नहुषो हवं सूरेः श्रोता राजानो अमृतस्य मन्द्राः। नभोजुवो यन्निरवस्य राधः प्रशस्तये महिना रथवते॥

adha gmantā nahuṣo havaṁ sūreḥ śrotā rājāno amṛtasya mandrāḥ | nabhojuvo yanniravasya rādhaḥ praśastaye mahinā rathavate ||

Come to the man's, the sacrificer's calling: hear, Kings of Immortality, joy-givers! While ye who speed through clouds decree your bounty largely, for fame, to him the chariot rider.

एतं शर्धं धाम यस्य सूरेरित्यवोचन्दशतयस्य नंशे। द्युम्नानि येषु वसुताती रारन्विश्वे सन्वन्तु प्रभृथेषु वाजम्॥

etaṁ śardhaṁ dhāma yasya sūrerityavocandaśatayasya naṁśe | dyumnāni yeṣu vasutātī rāranviśve sanvantu prabhṛtheṣu vājam ||

Vigour will we bestow on that adorer whose tenfold draught we come to taste, so spake they. May all in whom rest splendour and great riches obtain refreshment in these sacrifices.

मन्दामहे दशतयस्य धासेर्द्विर्यत्पञ्च बिभ्रतो यन्त्यन्ना। किमिष्टाश्व इष्टरश्मिरेत ईशानासस्तरुष ऋञ्जते नॄन्॥

mandāmahe daśatayasya dhāserdviryatpañca bibhrato yantyannā | kimiṣṭāśva iṣṭaraśmireta īśānāsastaruṣa ṛñjate nṝn ||

We will rejoice to drink the tenfold present when the twicefive come bearing sacred viands. What can he do whose steeds and reins are choicest? These, the all-potent, urge brave men to conquest.

हिरण्यकर्णं मणिग्रीवमर्णस्तन्नो विश्वे वरिवस्यन्तु देवाः। अर्यो गिरः सद्य आ जग्मुषीरोस्राश्चाकन्तूभयेष्वस्मे॥

hiraṇyakarṇaṁ maṇigrīvamarṇastanno viśve varivasyantu devāḥ | aryo giraḥ sadya ā jagmuṣīrosrāścākantūbhayeṣvasme ||

The sea and all the Deities shall give us him with the golden car and neck bejewelled. Dawns, hasting to the praises otthe pious, be pleased with us. both offerers and singers.

चत्वारो मा मशर्शारस्य शिश्वस्त्रयो राज्ञ आयवसस्य जिष्णोः। रथो वां मित्रावरुणा दीर्घाप्साः स्यूमगभस्तिः सूरो नाद्यौत्॥

catvāro mā maśarśārasya śiśvastrayo rājña āyavasasya jiṣṇoḥ | ratho vāṁ mitrāvaruṇā dīrghāpsāḥ syūmagabhastiḥ sūro nādyaut ||

Four youthful sons of Masarsara vex me, three, of the king, the conquering Ayavasa. Now like the Sun, O Varuna and Mitra, your car hath shone, long-shaped and reined with splendour.
