Sukta 44

समिधाग्निं दुवस्यत घृतैर्बोधयतातिथिम्। आस्मिन्हव्या जुहोतन॥

samidhāgniṁ duvasyata ghṛtairbodhayatātithim | āsminhavyā juhotana ||

PAY service unto Agni with your fuel, rouse your Guest with oil: In him present your offerings.

अग्ने स्तोमं जुषस्व मे वर्धस्वानेन मन्मना। प्रति सूक्तानि हर्य नः॥

agne stomaṁ juṣasva me vardhasvānena manmanā | prati sūktāni harya naḥ ||

Agni, do thou accept my laud, be magnified by this my song: Welcome my sweedy-spoken words.

अग्निं दूतं पुरो दधे हव्यवाहमुप ब्रुवे। देवाँ आ सादयादिह॥

agniṁ dūtaṁ puro dadhe havyavāhamupa bruve | devā ā sādayādiha ||

Agni, envoy, I place in front; the oblation-bearer I address: Here let him seat the Deities.

उत्ते बृहन्तो अर्चयः समिधानस्य दीदिवः। अग्ने शुक्रास ईरते॥

utte bṛhanto arcayaḥ samidhānasya dīdivaḥ | agne śukrāsa īrate ||

Agni, the lofty flames of' thee enkindled have gone up on high, Thy bright flames, thou Refulgent One.

उप त्वा जुह्वो मम घृताचीर्यन्तु हर्यत। अग्ने हव्या जुषस्व नः॥

upa tvā juhvo mama ghṛtācīryantu haryata | agne havyā juṣasva naḥ ||

Beloved! let my ladles full of sacred oil come near to thee: Agni, accept our offerings.

मन्द्रं होतारमृत्विजं चित्रभानुं विभावसुम्। अग्निमीळे स उ श्रवत्॥

mandraṁ hotāramṛtvijaṁ citrabhānuṁ vibhāvasum | agnimīḻe sa u śravat ||

I worship Agni-may he hear!-the cheerful, the Invoker, Priest, Of varied splendour, rich in light.

प्रत्नं होतारमीड्यं जुष्टमग्निं कविक्रतुम्। अध्वराणामभिश्रियम्॥

pratnaṁ hotāramīḍyaṁ juṣṭamagniṁ kavikratum | adhvarāṇāmabhiśriyam ||

Ancient Invoker, meet for praise, beloved Agni, wise and strong, The visitant of solemn rites.

जुषाणो अङ्गिरस्तमेमा हव्यान्यानुषक्। अग्ने यज्ञं नय ऋतुथा॥

juṣāṇo aṅgirastamemā havyānyānuṣak | agne yajñaṁ naya ṛtuthā ||

Agni, best Angiras, accept straightway these offerings, and guide The seasonable sacrifice.

समिधान उ सन्त्य शुक्रशोच इहा वह। चिकित्वान्दैव्यं जनम्॥

samidhāna u santya śukraśoca ihā vaha | cikitvāndaivyaṁ janam ||

Excellent God, with brilliant flames, enkindled bring thou hitherward, Knowing the way, the Heavenly Host.

विप्रं होतारमद्रुहं धूमकेतुं विभावसुम्। यज्ञानां केतुमीमहे॥

vipraṁ hotāramadruhaṁ dhūmaketuṁ vibhāvasum | yajñānāṁ ketumīmahe ||

Him, Sage and Herald, void of guile, ensign of sacrifices, him Smoke-bannered, rich in light, we seek.

अग्ने नि पाहि नस्त्वं प्रति ष्म देव रीषतः। भिन्धि द्वेषः सहस्कृत॥

agne ni pāhi nastvaṁ prati ṣma deva rīṣataḥ | bhindhi dveṣaḥ sahaskṛta ||

O Agni, be our Guardian thou, God, against those who injure us: Destroy our foes, thou Son of Strength.

अग्निः प्रत्नेन मन्मना शुम्भानस्तन्वं स्वाम्। कविर्विप्रेण वावृधे॥

agniḥ pratnena manmanā śumbhānastanvaṁ svām | kavirvipreṇa vāvṛdhe ||

Making his body beautiful, Agni the Sage hath waxen by The singer and his ancient hymn.

ऊर्जो नपातमा हुवेऽग्निं पावकशोचिषम्। अस्मिन्यज्ञे स्वध्वरे॥

ūrjo napātamā huve'gniṁ pāvakaśociṣam | asminyajñe svadhvare ||

I invocate the Child of Strength, Agni with purifying flame, At this well-ordered sacrifice.

स नो मित्रमहस्त्वमग्ने शुक्रेण शोचिषा। देवैरा सत्सि बर्हिषि॥

sa no mitramahastvamagne śukreṇa śociṣā | devairā satsi barhiṣi ||

So Agni, rich in many friends, with fiery splendour, seat thyself With Gods upon our sacred grass.

यो अग्निं तन्वो दमे देवं मर्तः सपर्यति। तस्मा इद्दीदयद्वसु॥

yo agniṁ tanvo dame devaṁ martaḥ saparyati | tasmā iddīdayadvasu ||

The mortal man who serves the God Agni within his own abode, For him he causes wealth to shine.

अग्निर्मूर्धा दिवः ककुत्पतिः पृथिव्या अयम्। अपां रेतांसि जिन्वति॥

agnirmūrdhā divaḥ kakutpatiḥ pṛthivyā ayam | apāṁ retāṁsi jinvati ||

Agni is head and height of heaven, the Master of the earth is he: He quickeneth the watere seed.

उदग्ने शुचयस्तव शुक्रा भ्राजन्त ईरते। तव ज्योतींष्यर्चयः॥

udagne śucayastava śukrā bhrājanta īrate | tava jyotīṁṣyarcayaḥ ||

Upward, O Agni, rise thy flames, pure and resplendent, blazing high, Thy lustres, fair effulgences.

ईशिषे वार्यस्य हि दात्रस्याग्ने स्वर्पतिः। स्तोता स्यां तव शर्मणि॥

īśiṣe vāryasya hi dātrasyāgne svarpatiḥ | stotā syāṁ tava śarmaṇi ||

For, Agni, thou as Lord of Light rulest o'er choicest gifts: may I, Thy singer, find defence in thee.

त्वामग्ने मनीषिणस्त्वां हिन्वन्ति चित्तिभिः। त्वां वर्धन्तु नो गिरः॥

tvāmagne manīṣiṇastvāṁ hinvanti cittibhiḥ | tvāṁ vardhantu no giraḥ ||

O Agni, they who understand stir thee to action with their thoughts: So let our songs enhance thy might.

अदब्धस्य स्वधावतो दूतस्य रेभतः सदा। अग्नेः सख्यं वृणीमहे॥

adabdhasya svadhāvato dūtasya rebhataḥ sadā | agneḥ sakhyaṁ vṛṇīmahe ||

We ever claim the friendship of Agni, the singing messenger, Of God-like nature, void of guile.

अग्निः शुचिव्रततमः शुचिर्विप्रः शुचिः कविः। शुची रोचत आहुतः॥

agniḥ śucivratatamaḥ śucirvipraḥ śuciḥ kaviḥ | śucī rocata āhutaḥ ||

Agni who bears most holy sway, the holy Singer, holy Sage, Shines holy when we worship him.

उत त्वा धीतयो मम गिरो वर्धन्तु विश्वहा। अग्ने सख्यस्य बोधि नः॥

uta tvā dhītayo mama giro vardhantu viśvahā | agne sakhyasya bodhi naḥ ||

Yea, let my meditations, let my songs exalt thee evermore. Think, Agni, of our friendly bond,

यदग्ने स्यामहं त्वं त्वं वा घा स्या अहम्। स्युष्टे सत्या इहाशिषः॥

yadagne syāmahaṁ tvaṁ tvaṁ vā ghā syā aham | syuṣṭe satyā ihāśiṣaḥ ||

If I were thou and thou wert I, O Agni, every prayer of thine Should have its due fulfilment here.

वसुर्वसुपतिर्हि कमस्यग्ने विभावसुः। स्याम ते सुमतावपि॥

vasurvasupatirhi kamasyagne vibhāvasuḥ | syāma te sumatāvapi ||

For Excellent and Lord of wealth. art thou O Agni, rich in light: May we enjoy thy favouring grace.

अग्ने धृतव्रताय ते समुद्रायेव सिन्धवः। गिरो वाश्रास ईरते॥

agne dhṛtavratāya te samudrāyeva sindhavaḥ | giro vāśrāsa īrate ||

Agni, to thee whose laws stand fast our resonant songs of praise speed forth, As rivers hasten to the sea.

युवानं विश्पतिं कविं विश्वादं पुरुवेपसम्। अग्निं शुम्भामि मन्मभिः॥

yuvānaṁ viśpatiṁ kaviṁ viśvādaṁ puruvepasam | agniṁ śumbhāmi manmabhiḥ ||

Agni, the Youthful Lord of men, who stirreth much and eateth all, The Sage, I glorify with hymns.

यज्ञानां रथ्ये वयं तिग्मजम्भाय वीळवे। स्तोमैरिषेमाग्नये॥

yajñānāṁ rathye vayaṁ tigmajambhāya vīḻave | stomairiṣemāgnaye ||

To Agni let us haste with lauds, the Guide of sacrificial rites, Armed with sharp teeth, the Mighty One.

अयमग्ने त्वे अपि जरिता भूतु सन्त्य। तस्मै पावक मृळय॥

ayamagne tve api jaritā bhūtu santya | tasmai pāvaka mṛḻaya ||

And let this man, good Agni, be with thee the singer of thy praise: Be gracious, Holy One, to him.

धीरो ह्यस्यद्मसद्विप्रो न जागृविः सदा। अग्ने दीदयसि द्यवि॥

dhīro hyasyadmasadvipro na jāgṛviḥ sadā | agne dīdayasi dyavi ||

For thou art sharer of our feast, wise, ever watchful as a Sage: Agni, thou shinest in the sky.

पुराग्ने दुरितेभ्यः पुरा मृध्रेभ्यः कवे। प्र ण आयुर्वसो तिर॥

purāgne duritebhyaḥ purā mṛdhrebhyaḥ kave | pra ṇa āyurvaso tira ||

O Agni, Sage, before our foes, before misfortunes fall on us, Excellent Lord, prolong our lives.
