सूक्त ८९

इन्द्रं स्तवा नृतमं यस्य मह्ना विबबाधे रोचना वि ज्मो अन्तान्। आ यः पप्रौ चर्षणीधृद्वरोभिः प्र सिन्धुभ्यो रिरिचानो महित्वा॥

indraṁ stavā nṛtamaṁ yasya mahnā vibabādhe rocanā vi jmo antān | ā yaḥ paprau carṣaṇīdhṛdvarobhiḥ pra sindhubhyo riricāno mahitvā ||

I WILL extol the most heroic Indra who with his might forced earth and sky asunder; Who hath filled all with width as man's Upholder, surpassing floods and rivers in his greatness.

स सूर्यः पर्युरू वरांस्येन्द्रो ववृत्याद्रथ्येव चक्रा। अतिष्ठन्तमपस्यं न सर्गं कृष्णा तमांसि त्विष्या जघान॥

sa sūryaḥ paryurū varāṁsyendro vavṛtyādrathyeva cakrā | atiṣṭhantamapasyaṁ na sargaṁ kṛṣṇā tamāṁsi tviṣyā jaghāna ||

Surya is he: throughout the wide expanses shall Indra turn him, swift as car-wheels, hither, Like a stream resting not but ever active he hath destroyed, with light, the blackhued darkness.

समानमस्मा अनपावृदर्च क्ष्मया दिवो असमं ब्रह्म नव्यम्। वि यः पृष्ठेव जनिमान्यर्य इन्द्रश्चिकाय न सखायमीषे॥

samānamasmā anapāvṛdarca kṣmayā divo asamaṁ brahma navyam | vi yaḥ pṛṣṭheva janimānyarya indraścikāya na sakhāyamīṣe ||

To him I sing a holy prayer, incessant new, matchless, common to the earth and heaven, Who marks, as they were backs, all living creatures: ne'er doth he fail a friend, the noble Indra.

इन्द्राय गिरो अनिशितसर्गा अपः प्रेरयं सगरस्य बुध्नात्। यो अक्षेणेव चक्रिया शचीभिर्विष्वक्तस्तम्भ पृथिवीमुत द्याम्॥

indrāya giro aniśitasargā apaḥ prerayaṁ sagarasya budhnāt | yo akṣeṇeva cakriyā śacībhirviṣvaktastambha pṛthivīmuta dyām ||

I will send forth my songs in flow unceasing, like water from the ocean's depth, to Indra. Who to his car on both its sides securely hath fixed the earth and heaven as with an axle.

आपान्तमन्युस्तृपलप्रभर्मा धुनिः शिमीवाञ्छरुमाँ ऋजीषी। सोमो विश्वान्यतसा वनानि नार्वागिन्द्रं प्रतिमानानि देभुः॥

āpāntamanyustṛpalaprabharmā dhuniḥ śimīvāñcharumā ṛjīṣī | somo viśvānyatasā vanāni nārvāgindraṁ pratimānāni debhuḥ ||

Rousing with draughts, the Shaker, rushing onward, impetuous, very strong, armed as with arrows Is Soma; forest trees and all the bushes deceive not Indra with their offered likeness.

न यस्य द्यावापृथिवी न धन्व नान्तरिक्षं नाद्रयः सोमो अक्षाः। यदस्य मन्युरधिनीयमानः शृणाति वीळु रुजति स्थिराणि॥

na yasya dyāvāpṛthivī na dhanva nāntarikṣaṁ nādrayaḥ somo akṣāḥ | yadasya manyuradhinīyamānaḥ śṛṇāti vīḻu rujati sthirāṇi ||

Soma hath flowed to him whom naught can equal, the earth, the heavens, the firmament, the mountains,- When heightened in his ire his indignation shatters the firm and breaks the strong in pieces.

जघान वृत्रं स्वधितिर्वनेव रुरोज पुरो अरदन्न सिन्धून्। बिभेद गिरिं नवमिन्न कुम्भमा गा इन्द्रो अकृणुत स्वयुग्भिः॥

jaghāna vṛtraṁ svadhitirvaneva ruroja puro aradanna sindhūn | bibheda giriṁ navaminna kumbhamā gā indro akṛṇuta svayugbhiḥ ||

As an axe fells the tree so be slew Vrtra, brake down the strongholds and dug out the rivers. He cleft the mountain like a new-made pitcher. Indra brought forth the kine with his Companions.

त्वं ह त्यदृणया इन्द्र धीरोऽसिर्न पर्व वृजिना शृणासि। प्र ये मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धाम युजं न जना मिनन्ति मित्रम्॥

tvaṁ ha tyadṛṇayā indra dhīro'sirna parva vṛjinā śṛṇāsi | pra ye mitrasya varuṇasya dhāma yujaṁ na janā minanti mitram ||

Wise art thou, Punisher of guilt, O Indra. The sword lops limbs, thou smitest down the sinner, The men who injure, as it were a comrade, the lofty Law of Varuna and Mitra.

प्र ये मित्रं प्रार्यमणं दुरेवाः प्र संगिरः प्र वरुणं मिनन्ति। न्यमित्रेषु वधमिन्द्र तुम्रं वृषन्वृषाणमरुषं शिशीहि॥

pra ye mitraṁ prāryamaṇaṁ durevāḥ pra saṁgiraḥ pra varuṇaṁ minanti | nyamitreṣu vadhamindra tumraṁ vṛṣanvṛṣāṇamaruṣaṁ śiśīhi ||

Men who lead evil lives, who break agreements, and injure Varuna, Aryaman and Mitra,- Against these foes, O Mighty Indra, sharpen, as furious death, thy Bull of fiery colour.

इन्द्रो दिव इन्द्र ईशे पृथिव्या इन्द्रो अपामिन्द्र इत्पर्वतानाम्। इन्द्रो वृधामिन्द्र इन्मेधिराणामिन्द्रः क्षेमे योगे हव्य इन्द्रः॥

indro diva indra īśe pṛthivyā indro apāmindra itparvatānām | indro vṛdhāmindra inmedhirāṇāmindraḥ kṣeme yoge havya indraḥ ||

Indra is Sovran Lord of Earth and Heaven, Indra is Lord of waters and of mountains. Indra is Lord of prosperers and sages Indra must be invoked in rest and effort.

प्राक्तुभ्य इन्द्रः प्र वृधो अहभ्यः प्रान्तरिक्षात्प्र समुद्रस्य धासेः। प्र वातस्य प्रथसः प्र ज्मो अन्तात्प्र सिन्धुभ्यो रिरिचे प्र क्षितिभ्यः॥

prāktubhya indraḥ pra vṛdho ahabhyaḥ prāntarikṣātpra samudrasya dhāseḥ | pra vātasya prathasaḥ pra jmo antātpra sindhubhyo ririce pra kṣitibhyaḥ ||

Vaster than days and nights, Giver of increase, vaster than firmament and flood of ocean, Vaster than bounds of earth and wind's extension, vaster than rivers and our lands is Indra.

प्र शोशुचत्या उषसो न केतुरसिन्वा ते वर्ततामिन्द्र हेतिः। अश्मेव विध्य दिव आ सृजानस्तपिष्ठेन हेषसा द्रोघमित्रान्॥

pra śośucatyā uṣaso na keturasinvā te vartatāmindra hetiḥ | aśmeva vidhya diva ā sṛjānastapiṣṭhena heṣasā droghamitrān ||

Forward, as herald of refulgent Morning, let thine insatiate arrow fly, O Indra. And pierce, as 'twere a stone launched forth from heaven, with hottest blaze the men who love deception.

अन्वह मासा अन्विद्वनान्यन्वोषधीरनु पर्वतासः। अन्विन्द्रं रोदसी वावशाने अन्वापो अजिहत जायमानम्॥

anvaha māsā anvidvanānyanvoṣadhīranu parvatāsaḥ | anvindraṁ rodasī vāvaśāne anvāpo ajihata jāyamānam ||

Him, verily, the moons, the mountains followed, the tall trees followed and the plants and herbage. Yearning with love both Worlds approached, the Waters waited on Indra when he first had being.

कर्हि स्वित्सा त इन्द्र चेत्यासदघस्य यद्भिनदो रक्ष एषत्। मित्रक्रुवो यच्छसने न गावः पृथिव्या आपृगमुया शयन्ते॥

karhi svitsā ta indra cetyāsadaghasya yadbhinado rakṣa eṣat | mitrakruvo yacchasane na gāvaḥ pṛthivyā āpṛgamuyā śayante ||

Where was the vengeful dart when thou, O Indra, clavest the demon ever beat on outrage? When fiends lay there upon the ground extended like cattle in the place of immolation?

शत्रूयन्तो अभि ये नस्ततस्रे महि व्राधन्त ओगणास इन्द्र। अन्धेनामित्रास्तमसा सचन्तां सुज्योतिषो अक्तवस्ताँ अभि ष्युः॥

śatrūyanto abhi ye nastatasre mahi vrādhanta ogaṇāsa indra | andhenāmitrāstamasā sacantāṁ sujyotiṣo aktavastā abhi ṣyuḥ ||

Those who are set in enmity against us, the Oganas, O Indra, waxen mighty,- Let blinding darkness follow those our fbemen, while these shall have bright shining nights to light them.

पुरूणि हि त्वा सवना जनानां ब्रह्माणि मन्दन्गृणतामृषीणाम्। इमामाघोषन्नवसा सहूतिं तिरो विश्वाँ अर्चतो याह्यर्वाङ्॥

purūṇi hi tvā savanā janānāṁ brahmāṇi mandangṛṇatāmṛṣīṇām | imāmāghoṣannavasā sahūtiṁ tiro viśvā arcato yāhyarvāṅ ||

May plentiful libations of the people, and singing Rsis' holy prayers rejoice thee. Hearing with love this common invocation, come unto us, pass by all those who praise thee.

एवा ते वयमिन्द्र भुञ्जतीनां विद्याम सुमतीनां नवानाम्। विद्याम वस्तोरवसा गृणन्तो विश्वामित्रा उत त इन्द्र नूनम्॥

evā te vayamindra bhuñjatīnāṁ vidyāma sumatīnāṁ navānām | vidyāma vastoravasā gṛṇanto viśvāmitrā uta ta indra nūnam ||

O Indra, thus may we be made partakers of thy new favours that shall bring us profit. Singing with love, may we the Visvamitras win daylight even now through thee, O Indra.

शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ। शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्॥

śunaṁ huvema maghavānamindramasminbhare nṛtamaṁ vājasātau | śṛṇvantamugramūtaye samatsu ghnantaṁ vṛtrāṇi saṁjitaṁ dhanānām ||

Call we on Maghavan, auspicious Indra, best hero in the fight where spoil is gathered, The Strong who listens, who gives aid in battles, who slays the Vrtras, wins and gathers riches.
