सूक्त ६१

अया वीती परि स्रव यस्त इन्दो मदेष्वा। अवाहन्नवतीर्नव॥

ayā vītī pari srava yasta indo madeṣvā | avāhannavatīrnava ||

FLOW onward, Indu, with this food for him who in thy wild delight Battered the nine-and-ninety down,

पुरः सद्य इत्थाधिये दिवोदासाय शम्बरम्। अध त्यं तुर्वशं यदुम्॥

puraḥ sadya itthādhiye divodāsāya śambaram | adha tyaṁ turvaśaṁ yadum ||

Smote swiftly forts, and gambara, then Yadu and that Turvaga, For pious Divodasa's sake.

परि णो अश्वमश्वविद्गोमदिन्दो हिरण्यवत्। क्षरा सहस्रिणीरिषः॥

pari ṇo aśvamaśvavidgomadindo hiraṇyavat | kṣarā sahasriṇīriṣaḥ ||

Finder of horses, pour on us horses and wealth in kine and gold, And, Indu, food in boundless store.

पवमानस्य ते वयं पवित्रमभ्युन्दतः। सखित्वमा वृणीमहे॥

pavamānasya te vayaṁ pavitramabhyundataḥ | sakhitvamā vṛṇīmahe ||

We seek to win thy friendly love, even Pavamana's flowing o'er The limit of the cleansing sieve.

ये ते पवित्रमूर्मयोऽभिक्षरन्ति धारया। तेभिर्नः सोम मृळय॥

ye te pavitramūrmayo'bhikṣaranti dhārayā | tebhirnaḥ soma mṛḻaya ||

With those same waves which in their stream oyerflow the purifying sieve, Soma; be gracious unto us.

स नः पुनान आ भर रयिं वीरवतीमिषम्। ईशानः सोम विश्वतः॥

sa naḥ punāna ā bhara rayiṁ vīravatīmiṣam | īśānaḥ soma viśvataḥ ||

O Soma, being purified, bring us from all sides,-for thou canst,- Riches and food with hero sons.

एतमु त्यं दश क्षिपो मृजन्ति सिन्धुमातरम्। समादित्येभिरख्यत॥

etamu tyaṁ daśa kṣipo mṛjanti sindhumātaram | samādityebhirakhyata ||

Him here, the Child whom streams have borne, the ten swift fingers beautify With the Adityas is he seen.

समिन्द्रेणोत वायुना सुत एति पवित्र आ। सं सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः॥

samindreṇota vāyunā suta eti pavitra ā | saṁ sūryasya raśmibhiḥ ||

With Indra and with Vayu he, effused, flows onward with,the beams Of Surya to the cleansing sieve.

स नो भगाय वायवे पूष्णे पवस्व मधुमान्। चारुर्मित्रे वरुणे च॥

sa no bhagāya vāyave pūṣṇe pavasva madhumān | cārurmitre varuṇe ca ||

Flow rich in sweets and lovely for our Bhaga, Vayu, Pusan flow For Mitra and for Varuna.

उच्चा ते जातमन्धसो दिवि षद्भूम्या ददे। उग्रं शर्म महि श्रवः॥

uccā te jātamandhaso divi ṣadbhūmyā dade | ugraṁ śarma mahi śravaḥ ||

High is thy juice's birth: though set in heaven, on earth it hath obtained Strong sheltering power and great renown.

एना विश्वान्यर्य आ द्युम्नानि मानुषाणाम्। सिषासन्तो वनामहे॥

enā viśvānyarya ā dyumnāni mānuṣāṇām | siṣāsanto vanāmahe ||

Striving to win, with him we gain all wealth from the ungodly man, Yea, all the glories of mankind.

स न इन्द्राय यज्यवे वरुणाय मरुद्भ्यः। वरिवोवित्परि स्रव॥

sa na indrāya yajyave varuṇāya marudbhyaḥ | varivovitpari srava ||

Finder of room and freedom, flow for Indra whom we must adore, For Varuna and the Marut host.

उपो षु जातमप्तुरं गोभिर्भङ्गं परिष्कृतम्। इन्दुं देवा अयासिषुः॥

upo ṣu jātamapturaṁ gobhirbhaṅgaṁ pariṣkṛtam | induṁ devā ayāsiṣuḥ ||

The Gods have come to Indu well-descended, beautified with milk, The active crusher of the foe.

तमिद्वर्धन्तु नो गिरो वत्सं संशिश्वरीरिव। य इन्द्रस्य हृदंसनिः॥

tamidvardhantu no giro vatsaṁ saṁśiśvarīriva | ya indrasya hṛdaṁsaniḥ ||

Even as mother cows their calf, so let our praise-songs strengthen him, Yea, him who winneth Indra's heart.

अर्षा णः सोम शं गवे धुक्षस्व पिप्युषीमिषम्। वर्धा समुद्रमुक्थ्यम्॥

arṣā ṇaḥ soma śaṁ gave dhukṣasva pipyuṣīmiṣam | vardhā samudramukthyam ||

Soma, pour blessings on our kine, pour forth the food that streams with milk Increase the sea that merits laud.

पवमानो अजीजनद्दिवश्चित्रं न तन्यतुम्। ज्योतिर्वैश्वानरं बृहत्॥

pavamāno ajījanaddivaścitraṁ na tanyatum | jyotirvaiśvānaraṁ bṛhat ||

From heaven hath Pavamana made, as 'twere, the marvellous thunder, and The lofty light of all mankind.

पवमानस्य ते रसो मदो राजन्नदुच्छुनः। वि वारमव्यमर्षति॥

pavamānasya te raso mado rājannaducchunaḥ | vi vāramavyamarṣati ||

The gladdening and auspicious juice of thee, of Pavamana, King! Flows o'er the woollen straining-cloth.

पवमान रसस्तव दक्षो वि राजति द्युमान्। ज्योतिर्विश्वं स्वर्दृशे॥

pavamāna rasastava dakṣo vi rājati dyumān | jyotirviśvaṁ svardṛśe ||

Thy juice, O Pavamana, sends its rays abroad like splendid skill, Like lustre, all heaven's light, to see.

यस्ते मदो वरेण्यस्तेना पवस्वान्धसा। देवावीरघशंसहा॥

yaste mado vareṇyastenā pavasvāndhasā | devāvīraghaśaṁsahā ||

Flow onward with that juice of thine most excellent, that brings delight, Slaying the wicked, dear to Gods.

जघ्निर्वृत्रममित्रियं सस्निर्वाजं दिवेदिवे। गोषा उ अश्वसा असि॥

jaghnirvṛtramamitriyaṁ sasnirvājaṁ divedive | goṣā u aśvasā asi ||

Killing the foeman and his hate, and winning booty every day, Gainer art thou of steeds and kine.

सम्मिश्लो अरुषो भव सूपस्थाभिर्न धेनुभिः। सीदञ्छ्येनो न योनिमा॥

sammiślo aruṣo bhava sūpasthābhirna dhenubhiḥ | sīdañchyeno na yonimā ||

Red-hued, be blended with the milk that seems to yield its lovely breast, Falcon-like resting in thine home.

स पवस्व य आविथेन्द्रं वृत्राय हन्तवे। वव्रिवांसं महीरपः॥

sa pavasva ya āvithendraṁ vṛtrāya hantave | vavrivāṁsaṁ mahīrapaḥ ||

Flow onward thou who strengthenedst Indra to slaughter Vrtra who Compassed and stayed the mighty floods.

सुवीरासो वयं धना जयेम सोम मीढ्वः। पुनानो वर्ध नो गिरः॥

suvīrāso vayaṁ dhanā jayema soma mīḍhvaḥ | punāno vardha no giraḥ ||

Soma who rainest gifts, may we win riches with our hero sons: Strengthen, as thou art cleansed, our hymns.

त्वोतासस्तवावसा स्याम वन्वन्त आमुरः। सोम व्रतेषु जागृहि॥

tvotāsastavāvasā syāma vanvanta āmuraḥ | soma vrateṣu jāgṛhi ||

Aided by thee, and through thy grace, may we be slayers when we war: Watch, Soma, at our solemn rites.

अपघ्नन्पवते मृधोऽप सोमो अराव्णः। गच्छन्निन्द्रस्य निष्कृतम्॥

apaghnanpavate mṛdho'pa somo arāvṇaḥ | gacchannindrasya niṣkṛtam ||

Chasing our foemen, driving off the godless, Soma flowcth on, Going to Indra's special place.

महो नो राय आ भर पवमान जही मृधः। रास्वेन्दो वीरवद्यशः॥

maho no rāya ā bhara pavamāna jahī mṛdhaḥ | rāsvendo vīravadyaśaḥ ||

O Pavamana, hither bring great riches, and destroy our foes: O Indu, grant heroic fame.

न त्वा शतं चन ह्रुतो राधो दित्सन्तमा मिनन्। यत्पुनानो मखस्यसे॥

na tvā śataṁ cana hruto rādho ditsantamā minan | yatpunāno makhasyase ||

A hundred obstacles have ne'er checked thee when fain to give thy boons, When, being cleansed, thou combatest.

पवस्वेन्दो वृषा सुतः कृधी नो यशसो जने। विश्वा अप द्विषो जहि॥

pavasvendo vṛṣā sutaḥ kṛdhī no yaśaso jane | viśvā apa dviṣo jahi ||

Indu, flow on, a mighty juice; glorify us among the folk: Drive all our enemies away.

अस्य ते सख्ये वयं तवेन्दो द्युम्न उत्तमे। सासह्याम पृतन्यतः॥

asya te sakhye vayaṁ tavendo dyumna uttame | sāsahyāma pṛtanyataḥ ||

Indu, in this thy friendship most lofty and glorious may we Subdue all those who war with us.

या ते भीमान्यायुधा तिग्मानि सन्ति धूर्वणे। रक्षा समस्य नो निदः॥

yā te bhīmānyāyudhā tigmāni santi dhūrvaṇe | rakṣā samasya no nidaḥ ||

Those awful weapons that thou hast, sharpened at point to strike men down- Guard us therewith from every foe.
