सूक्त ४६

त्वावतः पुरूवसो वयमिन्द्र प्रणेतः। स्मसि स्थातर्हरीणाम्॥

tvāvataḥ purūvaso vayamindra praṇetaḥ | smasi sthātarharīṇām ||

WE, Indra, Lord of ample wealth, our Guide, depend on one like thee, Thou driver of the Tawny Steeds.

त्वां हि सत्यमद्रिवो विद्म दातारमिषाम्। विद्म दातारं रयीणाम्॥

tvāṁ hi satyamadrivo vidma dātāramiṣām | vidma dātāraṁ rayīṇām ||

For, Hurler of the Bolt, we know thee true, the giver of our food, We know the giver of our wealth.

आ यस्य ते महिमानं शतमूते शतक्रतो। गीर्भिर्गृणन्ति कारवः॥

ā yasya te mahimānaṁ śatamūte śatakrato | gīrbhirgṛṇanti kāravaḥ ||

O thou whose majesty the bards celebrate with their songs, thou Lord, Of hundred powers and hundred aids.

सुनीथो घा स मर्त्यो यं मरुतो यमर्यमा। मित्रः पान्त्यद्रुहः॥

sunītho ghā sa martyo yaṁ maruto yamaryamā | mitraḥ pāntyadruhaḥ ||

Fair guidance hath the mortal man whom Aryaman, the Marut host, And Mitra, void of guile, protect.

दधानो गोमदश्ववत्सुवीर्यमादित्यजूत एधते। सदा राया पुरुस्पृहा॥

dadhāno gomadaśvavatsuvīryamādityajūta edhate | sadā rāyā puruspṛhā ||

Kine, steeds, and hero strength he gains, and prospers, by the Adityas sped, Ever in wealth which all desire.

तमिन्द्रं दानमीमहे शवसानमभीर्वम्। ईशानं राय ईमहे॥

tamindraṁ dānamīmahe śavasānamabhīrvam | īśānaṁ rāya īmahe ||

We pray to Indra for his gift, to him the Fearless and the Strong, We pray to him the Lord of wealth.

तस्मिन्हि सन्त्यूतयो विश्वा अभीरवः सचा। तमा वहन्तु सप्तयः पुरूवसुं मदाय हरयः सुतम्॥

tasminhi santyūtayo viśvā abhīravaḥ sacā | tamā vahantu saptayaḥ purūvasuṁ madāya harayaḥ sutam ||

For verily combined in him are all the fearless powers of aid. Him, rich in wealth, let swift Steeds bring to us, his Bays, to Soma juice for his carouse:

यस्ते मदो वरेण्यो य इन्द्र वृत्रहन्तमः। य आददिः स्वर्नृभिर्यः पृतनासु दुष्टरः॥

yaste mado vareṇyo ya indra vṛtrahantamaḥ | ya ādadiḥ svarnṛbhiryaḥ pṛtanāsu duṣṭaraḥ ||

Yea, that most excellent carouse, Indra, which slays most enemies, With Heroes wins the light of heaven, and is invincible in war:

यो दुष्टरो विश्ववार श्रवाय्यो वाजेष्वस्ति तरुता। स नः शविष्ठ सवना वसो गहि गमेम गोमति व्रजे॥

yo duṣṭaro viśvavāra śravāyyo vājeṣvasti tarutā | sa naḥ śaviṣṭha savanā vaso gahi gamema gomati vraje ||

Which merits fame, all-bountiful! and, unsubdued, hath victory in deeds of might. So come to our libations, Strongest! Excellent! May we obtain a stall of kine.

गव्यो षु णो यथा पुराश्वयोत रथया। वरिवस्य महामह॥

gavyo ṣu ṇo yathā purāśvayota rathayā | varivasya mahāmaha ||

Responding to our wish for cows, for steeds, and chariots, as of old, Be gracious, Greatest of the Great

नहि ते शूर राधसोऽन्तं विन्दामि सत्रा। दशस्या नो मघवन्नू चिदद्रिवो धियो वाजेभिराविथ॥

nahi te śūra rādhaso'ntaṁ vindāmi satrā | daśasyā no maghavannū cidadrivo dhiyo vājebhirāvitha ||

For, Hero, nowhere can I find the bounds of thy munificence. Still do thou favour us, O Bolt-armed Maghavan: with strength hast thou rewarded hymns.

य ऋष्वः श्रावयत्सखा विश्वेत्स वेद जनिमा पुरुष्टुतः। तं विश्वे मानुषा युगेन्द्रं हवन्ते तविषं यतस्रुचः॥

ya ṛṣvaḥ śrāvayatsakhā viśvetsa veda janimā puruṣṭutaḥ | taṁ viśve mānuṣā yugendraṁ havante taviṣaṁ yatasrucaḥ ||

High, glorifier of his friend, he knows all generations, he whom many praise. All races of mankind with ladies lifted up invoke that Mighty Indra's aid.

स नो वाजेष्वविता पुरूवसुः पुरःस्थाता मघवा वृत्रहा भुवत्॥

sa no vājeṣvavitā purūvasuḥ puraḥsthātā maghavā vṛtrahā bhuvat ||

Be he our Champion and Protector in great deeds, rich in all wealth, the Vrtra-slayer, Maghavan.

अभि वो वीरमन्धसो मदेषु गाय गिरा महा विचेतसम्। इन्द्रं नाम श्रुत्यं शाकिनं वचो यथा॥

abhi vo vīramandhaso madeṣu gāya girā mahā vicetasam | indraṁ nāma śrutyaṁ śākinaṁ vaco yathā ||

In the wild raptures of the juice sing to your Hero with high laud, to him the Wise, To Indra, glorious in his name, the Mighty One, even as the hymn alloweth it.

ददी रेक्णस्तन्वे ददिर्वसु ददिर्वाजेषु पुरुहूत वाजिनम्। नूनमथ॥

dadī rekṇastanve dadirvasu dadirvājeṣu puruhūta vājinam | nūnamatha ||

Thou givest wealth to me myself, thou givest treasure, Excellent! and the strong steed, O Much-invoked, in deeds of might, yea, even now.

विश्वेषामिरज्यन्तं वसूनां सासह्वांसं चिदस्य वर्पसः। कृपयतो नूनमत्यथ॥

viśveṣāmirajyantaṁ vasūnāṁ sāsahvāṁsaṁ cidasya varpasaḥ | kṛpayato nūnamatyatha ||

Him, Sovran Ruler of all precious things, who even hath power o'er this fair form of his, As now it taketh shape, and afterward,

महः सु वो अरमिषे स्तवामहे मीळ्हुषे अरंगमाय जग्मये। यज्ञेभिर्गीर्भिर्विश्वमनुषां मरुतामियक्षसि गाये त्वा नमसा गिरा॥

mahaḥ su vo aramiṣe stavāmahe mīḻhuṣe araṁgamāya jagmaye | yajñebhirgīrbhirviśvamanuṣāṁ marutāmiyakṣasi gāye tvā namasā girā ||

We praise, so that the Mighty One may speed to you, Pourer of boun ies, Traveller, prepared to go. Thou favourest the Maruts known to all, by song and sacrifice. With song and praise I sing to thee.

ये पातयन्ते अज्मभिर्गिरीणां स्नुभिरेषाम्। यज्ञं महिष्वणीनां सुम्नं तुविष्वणीनां प्राध्वरे॥

ye pātayante ajmabhirgirīṇāṁ snubhireṣām | yajñaṁ mahiṣvaṇīnāṁ sumnaṁ tuviṣvaṇīnāṁ prādhvare ||

We in the sacrifice perform their will whose voice is lifted high, The worship of those Thundering Ories who o'er the ridges of these mountains fly in troops.

प्रभङ्गं दुर्मतीनामिन्द्र शविष्ठा भर। रयिमस्मभ्यं युज्यं चोदयन्मते ज्येष्ठं चोदयन्मते॥

prabhaṅgaṁ durmatīnāmindra śaviṣṭhā bhara | rayimasmabhyaṁ yujyaṁ codayanmate jyeṣṭhaṁ codayanmate ||

O Indra, Mightiest, bring us that which crushes men of evil minds, Wealth suited to our needs, O Stirrer of the thought, best wealth, O thou who stirrest thought.

सनितः सुसनितरुग्र चित्र चेतिष्ठ सूनृत। प्रासहा सम्राट् सहुरिं सहन्तं भुज्युं वाजेषु पूर्व्यम्॥

sanitaḥ susanitarugra citra cetiṣṭha sūnṛta | prāsahā samrāṭ sahuriṁ sahantaṁ bhujyuṁ vājeṣu pūrvyam ||

O Winner, noble winner, strong, wondrous, most splendid, excellent, Sole Lord of victory, bring all-ovcrpowering wealth, joy-giving, chief in deeds of might.

आ स एतु य ईवदाँ अदेवः पूर्तमाददे। यथा चिद्वशो अश्व्यः पृथुश्रवसि कानीतेऽस्या व्युष्याददे॥

ā sa etu ya īvadā adevaḥ pūrtamādade | yathā cidvaśo aśvyaḥ pṛthuśravasi kānīte'syā vyuṣyādade ||

Now let the godless man approach who hath received reward so great As Vasa, Asvya, when this light of morning dawned, received from Prthusravas, from Kanita's son.

षष्टिं सहस्राश्व्यस्यायुतासनमुष्ट्रानां विंशतिं शता। दश श्यावीनां शता दश त्र्यरुषीणां दश गवां सहस्रा॥

ṣaṣṭiṁ sahasrāśvyasyāyutāsanamuṣṭrānāṁ viṁśatiṁ śatā | daśa śyāvīnāṁ śatā daśa tryaruṣīṇāṁ daśa gavāṁ sahasrā ||

Steeds sixty thousand and ten thousand kine, and twenty hundred camels I obtained; Ten hundred brown in hue, and other ten red in three spots: in all, ten thousand kine.

दश श्यावा ऋधद्रयो वीतवारास आशवः। मथ्रा नेमिं नि वावृतुः॥

daśa śyāvā ṛdhadrayo vītavārāsa āśavaḥ | mathrā nemiṁ ni vāvṛtuḥ ||

Ten browns that make my wealth increase, fleet steeds whose tails are long and fair, Turn with swift whirl my chariot wheel;

दानासः पृथुश्रवसः कानीतस्य सुराधसः। रथं हिरण्ययं ददन्मंहिष्ठः सूरिरभूद्वर्षिष्ठमकृत श्रवः॥

dānāsaḥ pṛthuśravasaḥ kānītasya surādhasaḥ | rathaṁ hiraṇyayaṁ dadanmaṁhiṣṭhaḥ sūrirabhūdvarṣiṣṭhamakṛta śravaḥ ||

The gifts which Prthusravas gave, Kanita's son munificent. He gave a chariot wrought of gold: the prince was passing bountiful, and won himself most lofty fame.

आ नो वायो महे तने याहि मखाय पाजसे। वयं हि ते चकृमा भूरि दावने सद्यश्चिन्महि दावने॥

ā no vāyo mahe tane yāhi makhāya pājase | vayaṁ hi te cakṛmā bhūri dāvane sadyaścinmahi dāvane ||

Come thou to this great rite of ours, Vayu! to give us vigorous light. We have served thee that thou mightest give much to us, yea, mightest quickly give great wealth.

यो अश्वेभिर्वहते वस्त उस्रास्त्रिः सप्त सप्ततीनाम्। एभिः सोमेभिः सोमसुद्भिः सोमपा दानाय शुक्रपूतपाः॥

yo aśvebhirvahate vasta usrāstriḥ sapta saptatīnām | ebhiḥ somebhiḥ somasudbhiḥ somapā dānāya śukrapūtapāḥ ||

Who with thrice seven times seventy horses comes to us, invested with the rays of morn, Through these our Soma-draughts and those who press, to give, drinker of pure bright Soma Juice.

यो म इमं चिदु त्मनामन्दच्चित्रं दावने। अरट्वे अक्षे नहुषे सुकृत्वनि सुकृत्तराय सुक्रतुः॥

yo ma imaṁ cidu tmanāmandaccitraṁ dāvane | araṭve akṣe nahuṣe sukṛtvani sukṛttarāya sukratuḥ ||

Who hath inclined this glorious one, buunteous himself, to give me gifts. Borne on firm chariot with the prosperous Nahup, wise, to a man yet more devout.

उचथ्ये वपुषि यः स्वराळुत वायो घृतस्नाः। अश्वेषितं रजेषितं शुनेषितं प्राज्म तदिदं नु तत्॥

ucathye vapuṣi yaḥ svarāḻuta vāyo ghṛtasnāḥ | aśveṣitaṁ rajeṣitaṁ śuneṣitaṁ prājma tadidaṁ nu tat ||

Sole Lord in beauty meet for praise, O Vayu, dropping fatness down, Hurried along by steeds, by camels, and by hounds, spreads forth thy train: even this it is.

अध प्रियमिषिराय षष्टिं सहस्रासनम्। अश्वानामिन्न वृष्णाम्॥

adha priyamiṣirāya ṣaṣṭiṁ sahasrāsanam | aśvānāminna vṛṣṇām ||

So, as a prize dear to the strong, the sixty thousand have I gained, Bulls that resemble vigorous steeds.

गावो न यूथमुप यन्ति वध्रय उप मा यन्ति वध्रयः॥

gāvo na yūthamupa yanti vadhraya upa mā yanti vadhrayaḥ ||

To me come oxen like a herd, yea, unto me the oxen come.

अध यच्चारथे गणे शतमुष्ट्राँ अचिक्रदत्। अध श्वित्नेषु विंशतिं शता॥

adha yaccārathe gaṇe śatamuṣṭrā acikradat | adha śvitneṣu viṁśatiṁ śatā ||

And in the grazing herd he made a hundred camels bleat for me, And twenty hundred mid the white.

शतं दासे बल्बूथे विप्रस्तरुक्ष आ ददे। ते ते वायविमे जना मदन्तीन्द्रगोपा मदन्ति देवगोपाः॥

śataṁ dāse balbūthe viprastarukṣa ā dade | te te vāyavime janā madantīndragopā madanti devagopāḥ ||

A hundred has the sage received, Dasa Balbutha's and Taruksa's gifts. These are thy people, Vayu, who rejoice with Indra for their guard, rejoice with Gods for guards.

अध स्या योषणा मही प्रतीची वशमश्व्यम्। अधिरुक्मा वि नीयते॥

adha syā yoṣaṇā mahī pratīcī vaśamaśvyam | adhirukmā vi nīyate ||

And now to Vasa Asvya here this stately woman is led forth, Adorned with ornaments of gold.
