सूक्त २५

ता वां विश्वस्य गोपा देवा देवेषु यज्ञिया। ऋतावाना यजसे पूतदक्षसा॥

tā vāṁ viśvasya gopā devā deveṣu yajñiyā | ṛtāvānā yajase pūtadakṣasā ||

I WORSHIP you who guard this All, Gods, holiest among the Gods, You, faithful to the Law, whose power is sanctified.

मित्रा तना न रथ्या वरुणो यश्च सुक्रतुः। सनात्सुजाता तनया धृतव्रता॥

mitrā tanā na rathyā varuṇo yaśca sukratuḥ | sanātsujātā tanayā dhṛtavratā ||

So, too, like charioteers are they, Mitra and sapient Varuna, Sons high-born from of old, whose holy laws stand fast.

ता माता विश्ववेदसासुर्याय प्रमहसा। मही जजानादितिरृतावरी॥

tā mātā viśvavedasāsuryāya pramahasā | mahī jajānāditirṛtāvarī ||

These Twain, possessors of all wealth, most glorious, for supremest sway Aditi, Mighty Mother, true to Law, brought forth.

महान्ता मित्रावरुणा सम्राजा देवावसुरा। ऋतावानावृतमा घोषतो बृहत्॥

mahāntā mitrāvaruṇā samrājā devāvasurā | ṛtāvānāvṛtamā ghoṣato bṛhat ||

Great Varuna and Mitra, Gods, Asuras and imperial Lords, True to Eternal Law proclaim the high decree.

नपाता शवसो महः सूनू दक्षस्य सुक्रतू। सृप्रदानू इषो वास्त्वधि क्षितः॥

napātā śavaso mahaḥ sūnū dakṣasya sukratū | sṛpradānū iṣo vāstvadhi kṣitaḥ ||

The offspring of a lofty Power, Daksa's Two Sons exceeding strong, Who, Lords of flowing rain, dwell in the place of food.

सं या दानूनि येमथुर्दिव्याः पार्थिवीरिषः। नभस्वतीरा वां चरन्तु वृष्टयः॥

saṁ yā dānūni yemathurdivyāḥ pārthivīriṣaḥ | nabhasvatīrā vāṁ carantu vṛṣṭayaḥ ||

Ye who have gathered up your gifts, celestial and terrestrial food, Let your rain come to us fraught with the mist of heaven.

अधि या बृहतो दिवोऽभि यूथेव पश्यतः। ऋतावाना सम्राजा नमसे हिता॥

adhi yā bṛhato divo'bhi yūtheva paśyataḥ | ṛtāvānā samrājā namase hitā ||

The Twain, who from the lofty sky seem to look down on herds below, Holy, imperial Lords, are set to be revered.

ऋतावाना नि षेदतुः साम्राज्याय सुक्रतू। धृतव्रता क्षत्रिया क्षत्रमाशतुः॥

ṛtāvānā ni ṣedatuḥ sāmrājyāya sukratū | dhṛtavratā kṣatriyā kṣatramāśatuḥ ||

They, true to Law, exceeding strong, have sat them down for savran rule: Princes whose laws stand fast, they have obtained their sway.

अक्ष्णश्चिद्गातुवित्तरानुल्बणेन चक्षसा। नि चिन्मिषन्ता निचिरा नि चिक्यतुः॥

akṣṇaścidgātuvittarānulbaṇena cakṣasā | ni cinmiṣantā nicirā ni cikyatuḥ ||

Pathfinders even better than the eye, with unobstructed sight, Even when they close their lids, observant, they perceive.

उत नो देव्यदितिरुरुष्यतां नासत्या। उरुष्यन्तु मरुतो वृद्धशवसः॥

uta no devyaditiruruṣyatāṁ nāsatyā | uruṣyantu maruto vṛddhaśavasaḥ ||

So may the Goddess Aditi, may the Nasatyas guard us well, The Martits guard us well,.endowed with mighty strength.

ते नो नावमुरुष्यत दिवा नक्तं सुदानवः। अरिष्यन्तो नि पायुभिः सचेमहि॥

te no nāvamuruṣyata divā naktaṁ sudānavaḥ | ariṣyanto ni pāyubhiḥ sacemahi ||

Do ye, O Bounteous Gods, protect our dwelling lace by day and night: With you for our defenders may we go unharmed.

अघ्नते विष्णवे वयमरिष्यन्तः सुदानवे। श्रुधि स्वयावन्सिन्धो पूर्वचित्तये॥

aghnate viṣṇave vayamariṣyantaḥ sudānave | śrudhi svayāvansindho pūrvacittaye ||

May we, unharmed, serve bountiful Visnu, the God who slayeth none: Self-moving Sindhu hear and be the first to mark.

तद्वार्यं वृणीमहे वरिष्ठं गोपयत्यम्। मित्रो यत्पान्ति वरुणो यदर्यमा॥

tadvāryaṁ vṛṇīmahe variṣṭhaṁ gopayatyam | mitro yatpānti varuṇo yadaryamā ||

This sure protection we elect, desirable and reaching far, Which Mitra, Varuna, and Aryaman afford.

उत नः सिन्धुरपां तन्मरुतस्तदश्विना। इन्द्रो विष्णुर्मीढ्वांसः सजोषसः॥

uta naḥ sindhurapāṁ tanmarutastadaśvinā | indro viṣṇurmīḍhvāṁsaḥ sajoṣasaḥ ||

And may the Sindhu of the floods, the Maruts, and the ASvin Pair, Boon Indra, and boon Visnu have one mind with us.

ते हि ष्मा वनुषो नरोऽभिमातिं कयस्य चित्। तिग्मं न क्षोदः प्रतिघ्नन्ति भूर्णयः॥

te hi ṣmā vanuṣo naro'bhimātiṁ kayasya cit | tigmaṁ na kṣodaḥ pratighnanti bhūrṇayaḥ ||

Because these warring Heroes stay the enmity of every foe, As the fierce water-flood repels the furious ones.

अयमेक इत्था पुरूरु चष्टे वि विश्पतिः। तस्य व्रतान्यनु वश्चरामसि॥

ayameka itthā purūru caṣṭe vi viśpatiḥ | tasya vratānyanu vaścarāmasi ||

Here this one God, the Lord of men, looks forth exceeding far and wide: And we, for your advantage, keep his holy laws.

अनु पूर्वाण्योक्या साम्राज्यस्य सश्चिम। मित्रस्य व्रता वरुणस्य दीर्घश्रुत्॥

anu pūrvāṇyokyā sāmrājyasya saścima | mitrasya vratā varuṇasya dīrghaśrut ||

We keep the old accustomed laws, the statutes of supremacy, The Iong-known laws of Mitra and of Varuna.

परि यो रश्मिना दिवोऽन्तान्ममे पृथिव्याः। उभे आ पप्रौ रोदसी महित्वा॥

pari yo raśminā divo'ntānmame pṛthivyāḥ | ubhe ā paprau rodasī mahitvā ||

He who hath measured with his ray the boundaries of heaven and earth, And with his majesty hath filled the two worlds full,

उदु ष्य शरणे दिवो ज्योतिरयंस्त सूर्यः। अग्निर्न शुक्रः समिधान आहुतः॥

udu ṣya śaraṇe divo jyotirayaṁsta sūryaḥ | agnirna śukraḥ samidhāna āhutaḥ ||

Surya hath spread his light aloft up to the region of the sky, Like Agni all aflame when gifts are offered him.

वचो दीर्घप्रसद्मनीशे वाजस्य गोमतः। ईशे हि पित्वोऽविषस्य दावने॥

vaco dīrghaprasadmanīśe vājasya gomataḥ | īśe hi pitvo'viṣasya dāvane ||

With him who sits afar the word is lord of food that comes from kine, Controller of the gift of unempoisoned food.

तत्सूर्यं रोदसी उभे दोषा वस्तोरुप ब्रुवे। भोजेष्वस्माँ अभ्युच्चरा सदा॥

tatsūryaṁ rodasī ubhe doṣā vastorupa bruve | bhojeṣvasmā abhyuccarā sadā ||

So unto Surya, Heaven, and Earth at morning and at eve I speak. Bringing enjoyments ever rise thou up for us.

ऋज्रमुक्षण्यायने रजतं हरयाणे। रथं युक्तमसनाम सुषामणि॥

ṛjramukṣaṇyāyane rajataṁ harayāṇe | rathaṁ yuktamasanāma suṣāmaṇi ||

From Uksanyayana a bay, from Harayana a white steed, And from Susaman we obtained a hamessed car.

ता मे अश्व्यानां हरीणां नितोशना। उतो नु कृत्व्यानां नृवाहसा॥

tā me aśvyānāṁ harīṇāṁ nitośanā | uto nu kṛtvyānāṁ nṛvāhasā ||

These two shall bring me further gain of troops of tawny-coloured steeds, The carriers shall they be of active men of war.

स्मदभीशू कशावन्ता विप्रा नविष्ठया मती। महो वाजिनावर्वन्ता सचासनम्॥

smadabhīśū kaśāvantā viprā naviṣṭhayā matī | maho vājināvarvantā sacāsanam ||

And the two sages have I gained who hold the reins and bear the whip, And the two great strong coursers, with my newest song.
