सूक्त ९६

प्र ते महे विदथे शंसिषं हरी प्र ते वन्वे वनुषो हर्यतं मदम्। घृतं न यो हरिभिश्चारु सेचत आ त्वा विशन्तु हरिवर्पसं गिरः॥

pra te mahe vidathe śaṁsiṣaṁ harī pra te vanve vanuṣo haryataṁ madam | ghṛtaṁ na yo haribhiścāru secata ā tvā viśantu harivarpasaṁ giraḥ ||

In the great synod will I laud thy two Bay Steeds: I prize the sweet strong drink of thee the Warrior- God, His who pours lovely oil as 'twere with yellow drops. Let my songs enter thee whose form hath golden tints.

हरिं हि योनिमभि ये समस्वरन्हिन्वन्तो हरी दिव्यं यथा सदः। आ यं पृणन्ति हरिभिर्न धेनव इन्द्राय शूषं हरिवन्तमर्चत॥

hariṁ hi yonimabhi ye samasvaranhinvanto harī divyaṁ yathā sadaḥ | ā yaṁ pṛṇanti haribhirna dhenava indrāya śūṣaṁ harivantamarcata ||

Ye who in concert sing unto the goldhued place, like Bay Steeds driving onward to the heavenly seat, For Indra laud ye strength allied with Tawny Steeds, laud him whom cows content as 'twere with yellow drops.

सो अस्य वज्रो हरितो य आयसो हरिर्निकामो हरिरा गभस्त्योः। द्युम्नी सुशिप्रो हरिमन्युसायक इन्द्रे नि रूपा हरिता मिमिक्षिरे॥

so asya vajro harito ya āyaso harirnikāmo harirā gabhastyoḥ | dyumnī suśipro harimanyusāyaka indre ni rūpā haritā mimikṣire ||

His is that thunderbolt, of iron, goldenhued, gold-coloured, very dear, and yellow in his arms; Bright with strong teeth, destroying with its tawny rage. In Indra are set fast all forms of golden hue.

दिवि न केतुरधि धायि हर्यतो विव्यचद्वज्रो हरितो न रंह्या। तुददहिं हरिशिप्रो य आयसः सहस्रशोका अभवद्धरिम्भरः॥

divi na keturadhi dhāyi haryato vivyacadvajro harito na raṁhyā | tudadahiṁ hariśipro ya āyasaḥ sahasraśokā abhavaddharimbharaḥ ||

As if a lovely ray were laid upon the sky, the golden thunderbolt spread out as in a race. That iron bolt with yellow jaw smote Ahi down. A thousand flames had he who bore the tawny-hued.

त्वंत्वमहर्यथा उपस्तुतः पूर्वेभिरिन्द्र हरिकेश यज्वभिः। त्वं हर्यसि तव विश्वमुक्थ्यमसामि राधो हरिजात हर्यतम्॥

tvaṁtvamaharyathā upastutaḥ pūrvebhirindra harikeśa yajvabhiḥ | tvaṁ haryasi tava viśvamukthyamasāmi rādho harijāta haryatam ||

Thou, thou, when praised by men who sacrificed of old. hadst pleasure in their lauds, O Indra golden-haired. All that befits thy song of praise thou welcornest, the perfect pleasant gift, O Golden-hued from birth.

ता वज्रिणं मन्दिनं स्तोम्यं मद इन्द्रं रथे वहतो हर्यता हरी। पुरूण्यस्मै सवनानि हर्यत इन्द्राय सोमा हरयो दधन्विरे॥

tā vajriṇaṁ mandinaṁ stomyaṁ mada indraṁ rathe vahato haryatā harī | purūṇyasmai savanāni haryata indrāya somā harayo dadhanvire ||

These two dear Bays bring hither Indra on his car, Thunder-armed, joyous, meet for laud, to drink his fill. Many libations flow for him who loveth them: to Indra have the gold-hued Soma juices run.

अरं कामाय हरयो दधन्विरे स्थिराय हिन्वन्हरयो हरी तुरा। अर्वद्भिर्यो हरिभिर्जोषमीयते सो अस्य कामं हरिवन्तमानशे॥

araṁ kāmāya harayo dadhanvire sthirāya hinvanharayo harī turā | arvadbhiryo haribhirjoṣamīyate so asya kāmaṁ harivantamānaśe ||

Tle gold-hued drops have flowed to gratify his wish: the yellow dro s have urged the swift Bays to the Strong. He who speeds on with Bay Steeds even as he lists hath satisfied his longing for the golden drops.

हरिश्मशारुर्हरिकेश आयसस्तुरस्पेये यो हरिपा अवर्धत। अर्वद्भिर्यो हरिभिर्वाजिनीवसुरति विश्वा दुरिता पारिषद्धरी॥

hariśmaśārurharikeśa āyasasturaspeye yo haripā avardhata | arvadbhiryo haribhirvājinīvasurati viśvā duritā pāriṣaddharī ||

At the swift draught the Soma-drinker waxed in might, the Iron One with yellow beard and yellow hair. He, Lord of Tawny Coursers, Lord of fleet-foot Mares, will bear his Bay Steeds safely over all distress.

स्रुवेव यस्य हरिणी विपेततुः शिप्रे वाजाय हरिणी दविध्वतः। प्र यत्कृते चमसे मर्मृजद्धरी पीत्वा मदस्य हर्यतस्यान्धसः॥

sruveva yasya hariṇī vipetatuḥ śipre vājāya hariṇī davidhvataḥ | pra yatkṛte camase marmṛjaddharī pītvā madasya haryatasyāndhasaḥ ||

His yellow-coloured jaws, like ladles move apart, what time, for strength, he makes the yellow- tinted stir, When, while the bowl stands there, he grooms his Tawny Steeds, when he hath drunk strong drink, the sweet juice that he loves.

उत स्म सद्म हर्यतस्य पस्त्योरत्यो न वाजं हरिवाँ अचिक्रदत्। मही चिद्धि धिषणाहर्यदोजसा बृहद्वयो दधिषे हर्यतश्चिदा॥

uta sma sadma haryatasya pastyoratyo na vājaṁ harivā acikradat | mahī ciddhi dhiṣaṇāharyadojasā bṛhadvayo dadhiṣe haryataścidā ||

Yea, to the Dear One's seat in homes of heaven and earth the Bay Steeds' Lord hath whinnied like a horse for food. Then the great wish hath seized upon him mightily, and the Beloved One hath gained high power of life,

आ रोदसी हर्यमाणो महित्वा नव्यंनव्यं हर्यसि मन्म नु प्रियम्। प्र पस्त्यमसुर हर्यतं गोराविष्कृधि हरये सूर्याय॥

ā rodasī haryamāṇo mahitvā navyaṁnavyaṁ haryasi manma nu priyam | pra pastyamasura haryataṁ gorāviṣkṛdhi haraye sūryāya ||

Thou, comprehending with thy might the earth and heaven, acceptest the dear hymn for ever new and new. O Asura, disclose thou and make visible the Cow's beloved home to the bright golden Sun.

आ त्वा हर्यन्तं प्रयुजो जनानां रथे वहन्तु हरिशिप्रमिन्द्र। पिबा यथा प्रतिभृतस्य मध्वो हर्यन्यज्ञं सधमादे दशोणिम्॥

ā tvā haryantaṁ prayujo janānāṁ rathe vahantu hariśipramindra | pibā yathā pratibhṛtasya madhvo haryanyajñaṁ sadhamāde daśoṇim ||

O Indra, let the eager wishes of the folk bring thee, delightful, golden-visored, on thy car, That, pleased with sacrifice wherein ten fingers toil, thou mayest, at the feast, drink of our offered meath.

अपाः पूर्वेषां हरिवः सुतानामथो इदं सवनं केवलं ते। ममद्धि सोमं मधुमन्तमिन्द्र सत्रा वृषञ्जठर आ वृषस्व॥

apāḥ pūrveṣāṁ harivaḥ sutānāmatho idaṁ savanaṁ kevalaṁ te | mamaddhi somaṁ madhumantamindra satrā vṛṣañjaṭhara ā vṛṣasva ||

Juices aforetime, Lord of Bays, thou drankest; and thine especially is this libation. Gladden thee, Indra, with the meath-rich Soma: pour it down ever, Mighty One! within thee.
