सूक्त २७

अग्निरुक्थे पुरोहितो ग्रावाणो बर्हिरध्वरे। ऋचा यामि मरुतो ब्रह्मणस्पतिं देवाँ अवो वरेण्यम्॥

agnirukthe purohito grāvāṇo barhiradhvare | ṛcā yāmi maruto brahmaṇaspatiṁ devā avo vareṇyam ||

CHEIF Priest is Agni at the laud, as stones and grass at sacrifice: With song I seek the Maruts, Brahmanaspati, Gods for help much to be desired.

आ पशुं गासि पृथिवीं वनस्पतीनुषासा नक्तमोषधीः। विश्वे च नो वसवो विश्ववेदसो धीनां भूत प्रावितारः॥

ā paśuṁ gāsi pṛthivīṁ vanaspatīnuṣāsā naktamoṣadhīḥ | viśve ca no vasavo viśvavedaso dhīnāṁ bhūta prāvitāraḥ ||

I sing to cattle and to Earth, to trees, to Dawns, to Night, to plants. O all ye Vasus, ye possessors of all wealth, be ye the furtherers of our thoughts.

प्र सू न एत्वध्वरोऽग्ना देवेषु पूर्व्यः। आदित्येषु प्र वरुणे धृतव्रते मरुत्सु विश्वभानुषु॥

pra sū na etvadhvaro'gnā deveṣu pūrvyaḥ | ādityeṣu pra varuṇe dhṛtavrate marutsu viśvabhānuṣu ||

Forth go, with Agni, to the Gods our sacrifice of ancient use, To the Adityas, Varuna whose Law stands fast, and the all-lightening Marut troop.

विश्वे हि ष्मा मनवे विश्ववेदसो भुवन्वृधे रिशादसः। अरिष्टेभिः पायुभिर्विश्ववेदसो यन्ता नोऽवृकं छर्दिः॥

viśve hi ṣmā manave viśvavedaso bhuvanvṛdhe riśādasaḥ | ariṣṭebhiḥ pāyubhirviśvavedaso yantā no'vṛkaṁ chardiḥ ||

Lords of all wealth, may they be strengtheners of man, destroyers of his enemies. Lords of all wealth, do ye, with guards which none may harm, preserve our dwelling free from foes.

आ नो अद्य समनसो गन्ता विश्वे सजोषसः। ऋचा गिरा मरुतो देव्यदिते सदने पस्त्ये महि॥

ā no adya samanaso gantā viśve sajoṣasaḥ | ṛcā girā maruto devyadite sadane pastye mahi ||

Come to us with one mind to-day, come to us all with one accord, Maruts with holy song, and, Goddess Aditi, Mighty One, to our house and home.

अभि प्रिया मरुतो या वो अश्व्या हव्या मित्र प्रयाथन। आ बर्हिरिन्द्रो वरुणस्तुरा नर आदित्यासः सदन्तु नः॥

abhi priyā maruto yā vo aśvyā havyā mitra prayāthana | ā barhirindro varuṇasturā nara ādityāsaḥ sadantu naḥ ||

Send us delightful things, ye Maruts, on your steeds: come ye, O Mitra, to our gifts. Let Indra, Varuna, and the Adityas sit, swift Heroes, on our sacred grass.

वयं वो वृक्तबर्हिषो हितप्रयस आनुषक्। सुतसोमासो वरुण हवामहे मनुष्वदिद्धाग्नयः॥

vayaṁ vo vṛktabarhiṣo hitaprayasa ānuṣak | sutasomāso varuṇa havāmahe manuṣvadiddhāgnayaḥ ||

We who have trimmed the grass for you, and set the banquet in array, And pressed the Soma, call you, Varuina, like men, with sacrificial fires aflame.

आ प्र यात मरुतो विष्णो अश्विना पूषन्माकीनया धिया। इन्द्र आ यातु प्रथमः सनिष्युभिर्वृषा यो वृत्रहा गृणे॥

ā pra yāta maruto viṣṇo aśvinā pūṣanmākīnayā dhiyā | indra ā yātu prathamaḥ saniṣyubhirvṛṣā yo vṛtrahā gṛṇe ||

O Maruts, Visinu, Asvins, Pusan, haste away with minds turned hitherward to Me. Let the Strong Indra, famed as Vrtra's slayer, come first with the winners of the spoil.

वि नो देवासो अद्रुहोऽच्छिद्रं शर्म यच्छत। न यद्दूराद्वसवो नू चिदन्तितो वरूथमादधर्षति॥

vi no devāso adruho'cchidraṁ śarma yacchata | na yaddūrādvasavo nū cidantito varūthamādadharṣati ||

Ye Guileless Gods, bestow on us a refuge strong on every side, A sure protection, Vasus, unassailable from near at hand or from afar.

अस्ति हि वः सजात्यं रिशादसो देवासो अस्त्याप्यम्। प्र णः पूर्वस्मै सुविताय वोचत मक्षू सुम्नाय नव्यसे॥

asti hi vaḥ sajātyaṁ riśādaso devāso astyāpyam | pra ṇaḥ pūrvasmai suvitāya vocata makṣū sumnāya navyase ||

Kinship have I with you, and close alliance O ye Gods, destroyers of our foes. Call us to our prosperity of former days, and soon to new klicity.

इदा हि व उपस्तुतिमिदा वामस्य भक्तये। उप वो विश्ववेदसो नमस्युराँ असृक्ष्यन्यामिव॥

idā hi va upastutimidā vāmasya bhaktaye | upa vo viśvavedaso namasyurā asṛkṣyanyāmiva ||

For now have I sent forth to you, that I may win a fair reward, Lords of all wealth, with homage, this my song of praise. like a milch-cow that faileth not.

उदु ष्य वः सविता सुप्रणीतयोऽस्थादूर्ध्वो वरेण्यः। नि द्विपादश्चतुष्पादो अर्थिनोऽविश्रन्पतयिष्णवः॥

udu ṣya vaḥ savitā supraṇītayo'sthādūrdhvo vareṇyaḥ | ni dvipādaścatuṣpādo arthino'viśranpatayiṣṇavaḥ ||

Excellent Savitar hath mounted up on high for you, ye sure and careful Guides. Bipeds and quadrupeds, with several hopes and aims, and birds have settled to their tasks.

देवंदेवं वोऽवसे देवंदेवमभिष्टये। देवंदेवं हुवेम वाजसातये गृणन्तो देव्या धिया॥

devaṁdevaṁ vo'vase devaṁdevamabhiṣṭaye | devaṁdevaṁ huvema vājasātaye gṛṇanto devyā dhiyā ||

Singing their praise with God-like thought let us invoke each God for grace, Each God to bring you help, each God to strengthen you.

देवासो हि ष्मा मनवे समन्यवो विश्वे साकं सरातयः। ते नो अद्य ते अपरं तुचे तु नो भवन्तु वरिवोविदः॥

devāso hi ṣmā manave samanyavo viśve sākaṁ sarātayaḥ | te no adya te aparaṁ tuce tu no bhavantu varivovidaḥ ||

For of one spirit are the Gods with mortal man, co-sharers all of gracious gifts. May they increase our strength hereafter and to-day, providing case and ample room.

प्र वः शंसाम्यद्रुहः संस्थ उपस्तुतीनाम्। न तं धूर्तिर्वरुण मित्र मर्त्यं यो वो धामभ्योऽविधत्॥

pra vaḥ śaṁsāmyadruhaḥ saṁstha upastutīnām | na taṁ dhūrtirvaruṇa mitra martyaṁ yo vo dhāmabhyo'vidhat ||

I laud you, O ye Guileless Gods, here where we meet to render praise. None, Varuna and Mitra, harins the mortal, man who honours and obeys your laws.

प्र स क्षयं तिरते वि महीरिषो यो वो वराय दाशति। प्र प्रजाभिर्जायते धर्मणस्पर्यरिष्टः सर्व एधते॥

pra sa kṣayaṁ tirate vi mahīriṣo yo vo varāya dāśati | pra prajābhirjāyate dharmaṇasparyariṣṭaḥ sarva edhate ||

He makes his house endure, he gathers plenteous food who pays obedience to your will. Born in his sons anew he spreads as Law commands, and prospers every way unharmed.

ऋते स विन्दते युधः सुगेभिर्यात्यध्वनः। अर्यमा मित्रो वरुणः सरातयो यं त्रायन्ते सजोषसः॥

ṛte sa vindate yudhaḥ sugebhiryātyadhvanaḥ | aryamā mitro varuṇaḥ sarātayo yaṁ trāyante sajoṣasaḥ ||

E'en without war he gathers wealth, and goes hisway on pleasant paths, Whom Mitra, Varuna and Aryaman protect, sharing the gift,of one accord.

अज्रे चिदस्मै कृणुथा न्यञ्चनं दुर्गे चिदा सुसरणम्। एषा चिदस्मादशनिः परो नु सास्रेधन्ती वि नश्यतु॥

ajre cidasmai kṛṇuthā nyañcanaṁ durge cidā susaraṇam | eṣā cidasmādaśaniḥ paro nu sāsredhantī vi naśyatu ||

E'en on the plain for him ye make a sloping path, an easy way where road is none: And far away from him the ineffectual shaft must vanish, shot at him in vain.

यदद्य सूर्य उद्यति प्रियक्षत्रा ऋतं दध। यन्निम्रुचि प्रबुधि विश्ववेदसो यद्वा मध्यंदिने दिवः॥

yadadya sūrya udyati priyakṣatrā ṛtaṁ dadha | yannimruci prabudhi viśvavedaso yadvā madhyaṁdine divaḥ ||

If ye appoint the rite to-day, kind Rulers, when the Sun ascends, Lords of all wealth, at sunset or at wakingtime, or be it at the noon of day,

यद्वाभिपित्वे असुरा ऋतं यते छर्दिर्येम वि दाशुषे। वयं तद्वो वसवो विश्ववेदस उप स्थेयाम मध्य आ॥

yadvābhipitve asurā ṛtaṁ yate chardiryema vi dāśuṣe | vayaṁ tadvo vasavo viśvavedasa upa stheyāma madhya ā ||

Or, Asuras, when ye have sheltered the worshipper who goes to sacrifice, at eve may we, O Vasus, ye possessors of all wealth, come then into the midst of You.

यदद्य सूर उदिते यन्मध्यंदिन आतुचि। वामं धत्थ मनवे विश्ववेदसो जुह्वानाय प्रचेतसे॥

yadadya sūra udite yanmadhyaṁdina ātuci | vāmaṁ dhattha manave viśvavedaso juhvānāya pracetase ||

If ye to-day at sunrise, or at noon, or in the gloom of eve, Lords of all riches, give fair treasure to the man, the wise man who hath sacrificed,

वयं तद्वः सम्राज आ वृणीमहे पुत्रो न बहुपाय्यम्। अश्याम तदादित्या जुह्वतो हविर्येन वस्योऽनशामहै॥

vayaṁ tadvaḥ samrāja ā vṛṇīmahe putro na bahupāyyam | aśyāma tadādityā juhvato haviryena vasyo'naśāmahai ||

Then we, imperial Rulers, claim of you this boon, your wide protection, as a son. May we, Adityas, offering holy gifts, obtain that which shall bring us greater bliss.
