सूक्त २४

सखाय आ शिषामहि ब्रह्मेन्द्राय वज्रिणे। स्तुष ऊ षु वो नृतमाय धृष्णवे॥

sakhāya ā śiṣāmahi brahmendrāya vajriṇe | stuṣa ū ṣu vo nṛtamāya dhṛṣṇave ||

COMPANIONS, let us learn a prayer to Indra. whom the thunder arms, To glorify your bold and most heroic Friend.

शवसा ह्यसि श्रुतो वृत्रहत्येन वृत्रहा। मघैर्मघोनो अति शूर दाशसि॥

śavasā hyasi śruto vṛtrahatyena vṛtrahā | maghairmaghono ati śūra dāśasi ||

For thou by slaying Vrtra art the Vrtra-slayer, famed for might. Thou, Hero, in rich gifts surpassest wealthy chiefs.

स नः स्तवान आ भर रयिं चित्रश्रवस्तमम्। निरेके चिद्यो हरिवो वसुर्ददिः॥

sa naḥ stavāna ā bhara rayiṁ citraśravastamam | nireke cidyo harivo vasurdadiḥ ||

As such, when glorified, bring us riches of very wondrous fame, Set in the highest rank, Wealth-giver, Lord of Bays!

आ निरेकमुत प्रियमिन्द्र दर्षि जनानाम्। धृषता धृष्णो स्तवमान आ भर॥

ā nirekamuta priyamindra darṣi janānām | dhṛṣatā dhṛṣṇo stavamāna ā bhara ||

Yea, Indra, thou disclosest that preeminent dear wealth of men: Boldly, O Bold One, glorified, bring it to us.

न ते सव्यं न दक्षिणं हस्तं वरन्त आमुरः। न परिबाधो हरिवो गविष्टिषु॥

na te savyaṁ na dakṣiṇaṁ hastaṁ varanta āmuraḥ | na paribādho harivo gaviṣṭiṣu ||

The workers of destruction stay neither thy right hand nor thy left: Nor hosts that press about thee, Lord of Bays, in fight.

आ त्वा गोभिरिव व्रजं गीर्भिरृणोम्यद्रिवः। आ स्मा कामं जरितुरा मनः पृण॥

ā tvā gobhiriva vrajaṁ gīrbhirṛṇomyadrivaḥ | ā smā kāmaṁ jariturā manaḥ pṛṇa ||

O Thunder-armed, I come with songs to thee as to a stall with kine: Fulfil the wish and thought of him who sings thy praise.

विश्वानि विश्वमनसो धिया नो वृत्रहन्तम। उग्र प्रणेतरधि षू वसो गहि॥

viśvāni viśvamanaso dhiyā no vṛtrahantama | ugra praṇetaradhi ṣū vaso gahi ||

Chief Vrtra-slayer, through the hymn of Visvamanas think of all, All that concerneth us, Excellent, Mighty Guide.

वयं ते अस्य वृत्रहन्विद्याम शूर नव्यसः। वसोः स्पार्हस्य पुरुहूत राधसः॥

vayaṁ te asya vṛtrahanvidyāma śūra navyasaḥ | vasoḥ spārhasya puruhūta rādhasaḥ ||

May we, O Vrtra-slayer, O Hero, find this thy newest boon, Longed-for, and excellent, thou who art much invoked!

इन्द्र यथा ह्यस्ति तेऽपरीतं नृतो शवः। अमृक्ता रातिः पुरुहूत दाशुषे॥

indra yathā hyasti te'parītaṁ nṛto śavaḥ | amṛktā rātiḥ puruhūta dāśuṣe ||

O Indra, Dancer, Much-invoked! as thy great power is unsurpassed, So be thy bounty to the worshipper unchecked.

आ वृषस्व महामह महे नृतम राधसे। दृळ्हश्चिद्दृह्य मघवन्मघत्तये॥

ā vṛṣasva mahāmaha mahe nṛtama rādhase | dṛḻhaściddṛhya maghavanmaghattaye ||

Most Mighty, most heroic One, for mighty bounty fill thee full. Though strong, strengthen thyself to win wealth, Maghavan!

नू अन्यत्रा चिदद्रिवस्त्वन्नो जग्मुराशसः। मघवञ्छग्धि तव तन्न ऊतिभिः॥

nū anyatrā cidadrivastvanno jagmurāśasaḥ | maghavañchagdhi tava tanna ūtibhiḥ ||

O Thunderer, never have our prayers gone forth to any God but thee: So help us, Maghavan, with thine assistance now.

नह्यङ्ग नृतो त्वदन्यं विन्दामि राधसे। राये द्युम्नाय शवसे च गिर्वणः॥

nahyaṅga nṛto tvadanyaṁ vindāmi rādhase | rāye dyumnāya śavase ca girvaṇaḥ ||

For, Dancer, verily I find none else for bounty, saving thee, For splendid wealth and power, thou Lover of the Song.

एन्दुमिन्द्राय सिञ्चत पिबाति सोम्यं मधु। प्र राधसा चोदयाते महित्वना॥

endumindrāya siñcata pibāti somyaṁ madhu | pra rādhasā codayāte mahitvanā ||

For Indra pour ye out the drops meath blent with Soma let him drink With bounty and with majesty will he further us.

उपो हरीणां पतिं दक्षं पृञ्चन्तमब्रवम्। नूनं श्रुधि स्तुवतो अश्व्यस्य॥

upo harīṇāṁ patiṁ dakṣaṁ pṛñcantamabravam | nūnaṁ śrudhi stuvato aśvyasya ||

I spake to the Bay Coursers' Lord, to him who gives ability: Now hear the son of Asva as he praises thee.

नह्यङ्ग पुरा चन जज्ञे वीरतरस्त्वत्। नकी राया नैवथा न भन्दना॥

nahyaṅga purā cana jajñe vīratarastvat | nakī rāyā naivathā na bhandanā ||

Never was any Hero born before thee mightier than thou: None certairdy like thee in goodness and in wealth.

एदु मध्वो मदिन्तरं सिञ्च वाध्वर्यो अन्धसः। एवा हि वीरः स्तवते सदावृधः॥

edu madhvo madintaraṁ siñca vādhvaryo andhasaḥ | evā hi vīraḥ stavate sadāvṛdhaḥ ||

O ministering priest, pour out of the sweet juice what gladdens most: So is the Hero praised who ever prospers us.

इन्द्र स्थातर्हरीणां नकिष्टे पूर्व्यस्तुतिम्। उदानंश शवसा न भन्दना॥

indra sthātarharīṇāṁ nakiṣṭe pūrvyastutim | udānaṁśa śavasā na bhandanā ||

Indra, whom Tawny Coursers bear, praise such as thine, preeminent, None by his power or by his goodness hath attained.

तं वो वाजानां पतिमहूमहि श्रवस्यवः। अप्रायुभिर्यज्ञेभिर्वावृधेन्यम्॥

taṁ vo vājānāṁ patimahūmahi śravasyavaḥ | aprāyubhiryajñebhirvāvṛdhenyam ||

We, seeking glory, have invoked this Master of all power and might Who must be glorified by constant sacri fice.

एतो न्विन्द्रं स्तवाम सखायः स्तोम्यं नरम्। कृष्टीर्यो विश्वा अभ्यस्त्येक इत्॥

eto nvindraṁ stavāma sakhāyaḥ stomyaṁ naram | kṛṣṭīryo viśvā abhyastyeka it ||

Come, sing we praise to Indra, friends, the Hero who deserves the laud, Him who with none to aid o'ercomes all tribes of men.

अगोरुधाय गविषे द्युक्षाय दस्म्यं वचः। घृतात्स्वादीयो मधुनश्च वोचत॥

agorudhāya gaviṣe dyukṣāya dasmyaṁ vacaḥ | ghṛtātsvādīyo madhunaśca vocata ||

To him who wins the kine, who keeps no cattle back, Celestial God, Speak wondrous speech more sweet than butter and than meath.

यस्यामितानि वीर्या न राधः पर्येतवे। ज्योतिर्न विश्वमभ्यस्ति दक्षिणा॥

yasyāmitāni vīryā na rādhaḥ paryetave | jyotirna viśvamabhyasti dakṣiṇā ||

Whose hero powers are measureless, whose bounty ne'er may be surpassed, Whose liberality, like light, is over all.

स्तुहीन्द्रं व्यश्ववदनूर्मिं वाजिनं यमम्। अर्यो गयं मंहमानं वि दाशुषे॥

stuhīndraṁ vyaśvavadanūrmiṁ vājinaṁ yamam | aryo gayaṁ maṁhamānaṁ vi dāśuṣe ||

As Vyasva did, praise Indra, praise the Strong unfluctuating Guide, Who gives the foe's possessions to the worshipper.

एवा नूनमुप स्तुहि वैयश्व दशमं नवम्। सुविद्वांसं चर्कृत्यं चरणीनाम्॥

evā nūnamupa stuhi vaiyaśva daśamaṁ navam | suvidvāṁsaṁ carkṛtyaṁ caraṇīnām ||

Now, son of Vyasva, praise thou him who to the tenth time still is new, The very Wise, whom living men must glorify

वेत्था हि निरृतीनां वज्रहस्त परिवृजम्। अहरहः शुन्ध्युः परिपदामिव॥

vetthā hi nirṛtīnāṁ vajrahasta parivṛjam | aharahaḥ śundhyuḥ paripadāmiva ||

Thou knowest, Indra, Thunder-armed, how to avoid destructive powers, As one secure from pitfalls each returning day.

तदिन्द्राव आ भर येना दंसिष्ठ कृत्वने। द्विता कुत्साय शिश्नथो नि चोदय॥

tadindrāva ā bhara yenā daṁsiṣṭha kṛtvane | dvitā kutsāya śiśnatho ni codaya ||

O Indra, bring that aid wherewith of old, Most Wondrous! thou didst slay His foes for active Kutsa: send it down to us.

तमु त्वा नूनमीमहे नव्यं दंसिष्ठ सन्यसे। स त्वं नो विश्वा अभिमातीः सक्षणिः॥

tamu tvā nūnamīmahe navyaṁ daṁsiṣṭha sanyase | sa tvaṁ no viśvā abhimātīḥ sakṣaṇiḥ ||

So now we seek thee fresh in might, Most Wonderful in act! for gain: For thou art he who conquers all our foes for us.

य ऋक्षादंहसो मुचद्यो वार्यात्सप्त सिन्धुषु। वधर्दासस्य तुविनृम्ण नीनमः॥

ya ṛkṣādaṁhaso mucadyo vāryātsapta sindhuṣu | vadhardāsasya tuvinṛmṇa nīnamaḥ ||

Who will set free from ruinous woe, or Arya on the Seven Streams: O valiant Hero, bend the Dasa's weapon down.

यथा वरो सुषाम्णे सनिभ्य आवहो रयिम्। व्यश्वेभ्यः सुभगे वाजिनीवति॥

yathā varo suṣāmṇe sanibhya āvaho rayim | vyaśvebhyaḥ subhage vājinīvati ||

As to Varosusaman thou broughtest great riches, for their gain, To Vyasva's sons, Blest Lady, rich in ample wealth!

आ नार्यस्य दक्षिणा व्यश्वाँ एतु सोमिनः। स्थूरं च राधः शतवत्सहस्रवत्॥

ā nāryasya dakṣiṇā vyaśvā etu sominaḥ | sthūraṁ ca rādhaḥ śatavatsahasravat ||

Let Narya's sacrificial meed reach Vyasva's Soma-bearing sons: In hundreds and in thousands be the great reward.

यत्त्वा पृच्छादीजानः कुहया कुहयाकृते। एषो अपश्रितो वलो गोमतीमव तिष्ठति॥

yattvā pṛcchādījānaḥ kuhayā kuhayākṛte | eṣo apaśrito valo gomatīmava tiṣṭhati ||

If one should ask thee, Where is he who sacrificed? Whither lookest thou? Like Vala he hath passed away and dwelleth now on Gomati.
