सूक्त ८

आ नो विश्वाभिरूतिभिरश्विना गच्छतं युवम्। दस्रा हिरण्यवर्तनी पिबतं सोम्यं मधु॥

ā no viśvābhirūtibhiraśvinā gacchataṁ yuvam | dasrā hiraṇyavartanī pibataṁ somyaṁ madhu ||

WITH all the succours that are yours, O Asvins, hither come to us: Wonderful, borne on paths of gold, drink ye the meath with Soma juice.

आ नूनं यातमश्विना रथेन सूर्यत्वचा। भुजी हिरण्यपेशसा कवी गम्भीरचेतसा॥

ā nūnaṁ yātamaśvinā rathena sūryatvacā | bhujī hiraṇyapeśasā kavī gambhīracetasā ||

Come now, ye Asvins, on your car decked with a sun-bright canopy, Bountiful, with your golden forms, Sages with depth of intellect.

आ यातं नहुषस्पर्यान्तरिक्षात्सुवृक्तिभिः। पिबाथो अश्विना मधु कण्वानां सवने सुतम्॥

ā yātaṁ nahuṣasparyāntarikṣātsuvṛktibhiḥ | pibātho aśvinā madhu kaṇvānāṁ savane sutam ||

Come hither from the Nahusas, come, drawn by pure hymns, from mid-air. O Asvins, drink the savoury juice shed in the Kanvas' sacrifice.

आ नो यातं दिवस्पर्यान्तरिक्षादधप्रिया। पुत्रः कण्वस्य वामिह सुषाव सोम्यं मधु॥

ā no yātaṁ divasparyāntarikṣādadhapriyā | putraḥ kaṇvasya vāmiha suṣāva somyaṁ madhu ||

Come to us hither from the heavens, come from mid-air, well-loved by us: Here Kanva's son hath pressed for you the pleasant meath of Soma juice.

आ नो यातमुपश्रुत्यश्विना सोमपीतये। स्वाहा स्तोमस्य वर्धना प्र कवी धीतिभिर्नरा॥

ā no yātamupaśrutyaśvinā somapītaye | svāhā stomasya vardhanā pra kavī dhītibhirnarā ||

Come, Asvins, to give car to us, to drink the Soma, Asvins, come. Hail, Strengtheners of the praise-song speed onward, ye Heroes, with your thoughts.

यच्चिद्धि वां पुर ऋषयो जुहूरेऽवसे नरा। आ यातमश्विना गतमुपेमां सुष्टुतिं मम॥

yacciddhi vāṁ pura ṛṣayo juhūre'vase narā | ā yātamaśvinā gatamupemāṁ suṣṭutiṁ mama ||

As, Heroes, in the olden time the Rsis called you to their aid, So now, O Asvins, come to us, come near to this mine eulogy.

दिवश्चिद्रोचनादध्या नो गन्तं स्वर्विदा। धीभिर्वत्सप्रचेतसा स्तोमेभिर्हवनश्रुता॥

divaścidrocanādadhyā no gantaṁ svarvidā | dhībhirvatsapracetasā stomebhirhavanaśrutā ||

Even from the luminous sphere of heaven come to us, ye who find the light, Carers for Vatsa, through our prayers and lauds, O yewho hearour call.

किमन्ये पर्यासतेऽस्मत्स्तोमेभिरश्विना। पुत्रः कण्वस्य वामृषिर्गीर्भिर्वत्सो अवीवृधत्॥

kimanye paryāsate'smatstomebhiraśvinā | putraḥ kaṇvasya vāmṛṣirgīrbhirvatso avīvṛdhat ||

Do others more than we adore the Asvins with their hymns of praise? The Rsi Vatsa, Kanva's son, hath magnified you with his songs.

आ वां विप्र इहावसेऽह्वत्स्तोमेभिरश्विना। अरिप्रा वृत्रहन्तमा ता नो भूतं मयोभुवा॥

ā vāṁ vipra ihāvase'hvatstomebhiraśvinā | ariprā vṛtrahantamā tā no bhūtaṁ mayobhuvā ||

The holy singer with his hymns hath called you, Asvins, hither-ward; Best Vrtra-slayers, free from stain, as such bring us felicity.

आ यद्वां योषणा रथमतिष्ठद्वाजिनीवसू। विश्वान्यश्विना युवं प्र धीतान्यगच्छतम्॥

ā yadvāṁ yoṣaṇā rathamatiṣṭhadvājinīvasū | viśvānyaśvinā yuvaṁ pra dhītānyagacchatam ||

What time, ye Lords of ample wealth, the Lady mounted on your car, Then, O ye Asvins, ye attained all wishes that your hearts desired.

अतः सहस्रनिर्णिजा रथेना यातमश्विना। वत्सो वां मधुमद्वचोऽशंसीत्काव्यः कविः॥

ataḥ sahasranirṇijā rathenā yātamaśvinā | vatso vāṁ madhumadvaco'śaṁsītkāvyaḥ kaviḥ ||

Come thence, O Asvins, on your car that hath a thousand ornaments: Vatsa the sage, the sage's son, hath sung a song of sweets to you.

पुरुमन्द्रा पुरूवसू मनोतरा रयीणाम्। स्तोमं मे अश्विनाविममभि वह्नी अनूषाताम्॥

purumandrā purūvasū manotarā rayīṇām | stomaṁ me aśvināvimamabhi vahnī anūṣātām ||

Cheerers of many, rich in goods, discoverers of opulence, The Asvins, Riders through the sky, have welcomed this my song of praise.

आ नो विश्वान्यश्विना धत्तं राधांस्यह्रया। कृतं न ऋत्वियावतो मा नो रीरधतं निदे॥

ā no viśvānyaśvinā dhattaṁ rādhāṁsyahrayā | kṛtaṁ na ṛtviyāvato mā no rīradhataṁ nide ||

O Asvins, grant us all rich gifts wherewith no man mav interfere. Make us observe the stated times: give us not over to reproach.

यन्नासत्या परावति यद्वा स्थो अध्यम्बरे। अतः सहस्रनिर्णिजा रथेना यातमश्विना॥

yannāsatyā parāvati yadvā stho adhyambare | ataḥ sahasranirṇijā rathenā yātamaśvinā ||

Whether, Nasatyas, ye be nigh, or whether ye be far away, Come thence, O Asvins, on your car that hath a thousand ornaments.

यो वां नासत्यावृषिर्गीर्भिर्वत्सो अवीवृधत्। तस्मै सहस्रनिर्णिजमिषं धत्तं घृतश्चुतम्॥

yo vāṁ nāsatyāvṛṣirgīrbhirvatso avīvṛdhat | tasmai sahasranirṇijamiṣaṁ dhattaṁ ghṛtaścutam ||

Vatsa the Rsi with his songs, Nasatyas, hath exalted you: Grant him rich food distilling oil, graced with a thousand ornaments.

प्रास्मा ऊर्जं घृतश्चुतमश्विना यच्छतं युवम्। यो वां सुम्नाय तुष्टवद्वसूयाद्दानुनस्पती॥

prāsmā ūrjaṁ ghṛtaścutamaśvinā yacchataṁ yuvam | yo vāṁ sumnāya tuṣṭavadvasūyāddānunaspatī ||

Bestow on him, O Asvins, food that strengthens, and that drops with oil, On him who praises you for bliss, and, Lords of bounty, prays for wealth.

आ नो गन्तं रिशादसेमं स्तोमं पुरुभुजा। कृतं नः सुश्रियो नरेमा दातमभिष्टये॥

ā no gantaṁ riśādasemaṁ stomaṁ purubhujā | kṛtaṁ naḥ suśriyo naremā dātamabhiṣṭaye ||

Come to us, ye who slay the foe, Lords of rich treasure, to this hymn. O Heroes, give us high renown and these good things of earth for help.

आ वां विश्वाभिरूतिभिः प्रियमेधा अहूषत। राजन्तावध्वराणामश्विना यामहूतिषु॥

ā vāṁ viśvābhirūtibhiḥ priyamedhā ahūṣata | rājantāvadhvarāṇāmaśvinā yāmahūtiṣu ||

The Priyamedhas have invoked you with all succours that are yours, You, Asvins, Lords of solemn rites, with calls entreating you to come.

आ नो गन्तं मयोभुवाश्विना शम्भुवा युवम्। यो वां विपन्यू धीतिभिर्गीर्भिर्वत्सो अवीवृधत्॥

ā no gantaṁ mayobhuvāśvinā śambhuvā yuvam | yo vāṁ vipanyū dhītibhirgīrbhirvatso avīvṛdhat ||

Come to us, Asvins, ye Who bring felicity, auspicious Ones, To Vatsa who with prayer and hymn, lovers of song, hath honoured you.

याभिः कण्वं मेधातिथिं याभिर्वशं दशव्रजम्। याभिर्गोशर्यमावतं ताभिर्नोऽवतं नरा॥

yābhiḥ kaṇvaṁ medhātithiṁ yābhirvaśaṁ daśavrajam | yābhirgośaryamāvataṁ tābhirno'vataṁ narā ||

Aid us, O Heroes, for those hymns for which ye helped GoSarya erst, Gave Vasa, Dasavraja aid, and Kanva and Medhatithi:

याभिर्नरा त्रसदस्युमावतं कृत्व्ये धने। ताभिः ष्वस्माँ अश्विना प्रावतं वाजसातये॥

yābhirnarā trasadasyumāvataṁ kṛtvye dhane | tābhiḥ ṣvasmā aśvinā prāvataṁ vājasātaye ||

And favoured Trasadasyu, ye Heroes, in spoil-deciding fray: For these, O Asvins, graciously assist us in acquiring strength.

प्र वां स्तोमाः सुवृक्तयो गिरो वर्धन्त्वश्विना। पुरुत्रा वृत्रहन्तमा ता नो भूतं पुरुस्पृहा॥

pra vāṁ stomāḥ suvṛktayo giro vardhantvaśvinā | purutrā vṛtrahantamā tā no bhūtaṁ puruspṛhā ||

O Asvins, may pure hymns of ours, and songs and praises, honour you: Best slayers everywhere of foes, as such we fondly yearn for you.

त्रीणि पदान्यश्विनोराविः सान्ति गुहा परः। कवी ऋतस्य पत्मभिरर्वाग्जीवेभ्यस्परि॥

trīṇi padānyaśvinorāviḥ sānti guhā paraḥ | kavī ṛtasya patmabhirarvāgjīvebhyaspari ||

Three places of the Asvins, erst concealed, are made apparent now. Both Sages, with the flight of Law come hither unto those who live.
