सूक्त ४

यदिन्द्र प्रागपागुदङ्न्यग्वा हूयसे नृभिः। सिमा पुरू नृषूतो अस्यानवेऽसि प्रशर्ध तुर्वशे॥

yadindra prāgapāgudaṅnyagvā hūyase nṛbhiḥ | simā purū nṛṣūto asyānave'si praśardha turvaśe ||

THOUGH, Indra, thou art called by men eastward and westward, north and south, Thou chiefly art with Anava and Turvasa, brave Champion I urged by men to Come.

यद्वा रुमे रुशमे श्यावके कृप इन्द्र मादयसे सचा। कण्वासस्त्वा ब्रह्मभिः स्तोमवाहस इन्द्रा यच्छन्त्या गहि॥

yadvā rume ruśame śyāvake kṛpa indra mādayase sacā | kaṇvāsastvā brahmabhiḥ stomavāhasa indrā yacchantyā gahi ||

Or, Indra, when with Ruma, Rusama, Syavaka, and Krpa thou rejoicest thee, Still do the Kanvas, bringing praises, with their prayers, O Indra, draw thee hither: come.

यथा गौरो अपा कृतं तृष्यन्नेत्यवेरिणम्। आपित्वे नः प्रपित्वे तूयमा गहि कण्वेषु सु सचा पिब॥

yathā gauro apā kṛtaṁ tṛṣyannetyaveriṇam | āpitve naḥ prapitve tūyamā gahi kaṇveṣu su sacā piba ||

Even as the wild-bull, when he thirsts, goes to the desert's watery pool, Come hither quickly both at morning and at eve, and with the Kanvas drink thy fill.

मन्दन्तु त्वा मघवन्निन्द्रेन्दवो राधोदेयाय सुन्वते। आमुष्या सोममपिबश्चमू सुतं ज्येष्ठं तद्दधिषे सहः॥

mandantu tvā maghavannindrendavo rādhodeyāya sunvate | āmuṣyā somamapibaścamū sutaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ taddadhiṣe sahaḥ ||

May the drops gladden thee, rich Indra, and obtain bounty for him who pours the juice. Soma pressed in the mortar didst thou take and drink, and hence hast won surpassing might.

प्र चक्रे सहसा सहो बभञ्ज मन्युमोजसा। विश्वे त इन्द्र पृतनायवो यहो नि वृक्षा इव येमिरे॥

pra cakre sahasā saho babhañja manyumojasā | viśve ta indra pṛtanāyavo yaho ni vṛkṣā iva yemire ||

With mightier strength he conquered strength, with energy he crushed their wrath. O Indra, Strong in youth, all those who sought the fray bent and bowed down to thee like trees.

सहस्रेणेव सचते यवीयुधा यस्त आनळुपस्तुतिम्। पुत्रं प्रावर्गं कृणुते सुवीर्ये दाश्नोति नम‍उक्तिभिः॥

sahasreṇeva sacate yavīyudhā yasta ānaḻupastutim | putraṁ prāvargaṁ kṛṇute suvīrye dāśnoti namauktibhiḥ ||

He who wins promise of thine aid goes girt as with a thousand mighty men of war. He makes his son preeminent in hero might - he serves with reverential prayer.

मा भेम मा श्रमिष्मोग्रस्य सख्ये तव। महत्ते वृष्णो अभिचक्ष्यं कृतं पश्येम तुर्वशं यदुम्॥

mā bhema mā śramiṣmograsya sakhye tava | mahatte vṛṣṇo abhicakṣyaṁ kṛtaṁ paśyema turvaśaṁ yadum ||

With thee, the Mighty, for our Friend, we will riot fear or feel fatigue. May we see Turvasa and Yadu: thy great deed, O Hero, must be glorified.

सव्यामनु स्फिग्यं वावसे वृषा न दानो अस्य रोषति। मध्वा सम्पृक्ताः सारघेण धेनवस्तूयमेहि द्रवा पिब॥

savyāmanu sphigyaṁ vāvase vṛṣā na dāno asya roṣati | madhvā sampṛktāḥ sāragheṇa dhenavastūyamehi dravā piba ||

On his left hip the Hero hath reclined himself: the proffered feast offends him not. The milk is blended with the honey of the bee: quickly come hither, baste, and drink.

अश्वी रथी सुरूप इद्गोमाँ इदिन्द्र ते सखा। श्वात्रभाजा वयसा सचते सदा चन्द्रो याति सभामुप॥

aśvī rathī surūpa idgomā idindra te sakhā | śvātrabhājā vayasā sacate sadā candro yāti sabhāmupa ||

Indra, thy friend is fair of form and rich in horses, cars, and kine. He evermore hath food accompanied by wealth, and radiant joins the company.

ऋश्यो न तृष्यन्नवपानमा गहि पिबा सोमं वशाँ अनु। निमेघमानो मघवन्दिवेदिव ओजिष्ठं दधिषे सहः॥

ṛśyo na tṛṣyannavapānamā gahi pibā somaṁ vaśā anu | nimeghamāno maghavandivediva ojiṣṭhaṁ dadhiṣe sahaḥ ||

Come like a thirsty antelope to the drinking-place: drink Soma to thy heart's desire. Raining it down, O Maghavan, day after day, thou gainest thy surpassing might.

अध्वर्यो द्रावया त्वं सोममिन्द्रः पिपासति। उप नूनं युयुजे वृषणा हरी आ च जगाम वृत्रहा॥

adhvaryo drāvayā tvaṁ somamindraḥ pipāsati | upa nūnaṁ yuyuje vṛṣaṇā harī ā ca jagāma vṛtrahā ||

Priest, let the Soma juice flow forth, for Indra longs to drink thereof. He even now hath yoked his vigorous Bay Steeds: the Vrtra-slayer hath come near.

स्वयं चित्स मन्यते दाशुरिर्जनो यत्रा सोमस्य तृम्पसि। इदं ते अन्नं युज्यं समुक्षितं तस्येहि प्र द्रवा पिब॥

svayaṁ citsa manyate dāśurirjano yatrā somasya tṛmpasi | idaṁ te annaṁ yujyaṁ samukṣitaṁ tasyehi pra dravā piba ||

The man with whom thou fillcst thee with Soma deems himself a pious worshipper. This thine appropriate food is here poured out for thee: come, hasten forward. drink of it,

रथेष्ठायाध्वर्यवः सोममिन्द्राय सोतन। अधि ब्रध्नस्याद्रयो वि चक्षते सुन्वन्तो दाश्वध्वरम्॥

ratheṣṭhāyādhvaryavaḥ somamindrāya sotana | adhi bradhnasyādrayo vi cakṣate sunvanto dāśvadhvaram ||

Press out the Soma juice, ye priests, for Indra borne upon his car. The pressing-stones speak loud of Indra, while they shed the juice which, offered, honours him.

उप ब्रध्नं वावाता वृषणा हरी इन्द्रमपसु वक्षतः। अर्वाञ्चं त्वा सप्तयोऽध्वरश्रियो वहन्तु सवनेदुप॥

upa bradhnaṁ vāvātā vṛṣaṇā harī indramapasu vakṣataḥ | arvāñcaṁ tvā saptayo'dhvaraśriyo vahantu savanedupa ||

To the brown juice may his dear vigorous Bay Steeds bring Indra, to our holy task. Hither let thy Car-steeds who seek the sacrifice bring thee to our drink-offerings.

प्र पूषणं वृणीमहे युज्याय पुरूवसुम्। स शक्र शिक्ष पुरुहूत नो धिया तुजे राये विमोचन॥

pra pūṣaṇaṁ vṛṇīmahe yujyāya purūvasum | sa śakra śikṣa puruhūta no dhiyā tuje rāye vimocana ||

Pusan, the Lord of ample wealth, for firm alliance we elect. May he with wisdom, Sakra! Looser! Much-invoked! aid us to riches and to seed.

सं नः शिशीहि भुरिजोरिव क्षुरं रास्व रायो विमोचन। त्वे तन्नः सुवेदमुस्रियं वसु यं त्वं हिनोषि मर्त्यम्॥

saṁ naḥ śiśīhi bhurijoriva kṣuraṁ rāsva rāyo vimocana | tve tannaḥ suvedamusriyaṁ vasu yaṁ tvaṁ hinoṣi martyam ||

Sharpen us like a razor in the barber's hands: send riches thou who settest free. Easy to find with thee are treasures of the Dawn for mortal man whom thou dost speed.

वेमि त्वा पूषन्नृञ्जसे वेमि स्तोतव आघृणे। न तस्य वेम्यरणं हि तद्वसो स्तुषे पज्राय साम्ने॥

vemi tvā pūṣannṛñjase vemi stotava āghṛṇe | na tasya vemyaraṇaṁ hi tadvaso stuṣe pajrāya sāmne ||

Pusan, I long to win thy love, I long to praise thee, Radiant God. Excellent Lord, 'tis strange tome, no wish have I to sing the psalm that Pajra sings.

परा गावो यवसं कच्चिदाघृणे नित्यं रेक्णो अमर्त्य। अस्माकं पूषन्नविता शिवो भव मंहिष्ठो वाजसातये॥

parā gāvo yavasaṁ kaccidāghṛṇe nityaṁ rekṇo amartya | asmākaṁ pūṣannavitā śivo bhava maṁhiṣṭho vājasātaye ||

My kine, O Radiant God, seek pasture where they will, my during wealth, Immortal One. Be our protector, Pusan! be, most liberal Lord, propitious to our gathering strength.

स्थूरं राधः शताश्वं कुरुङ्गस्य दिविष्टिषु। राज्ञस्त्वेषस्य सुभगस्य रातिषु तुर्वशेष्वमन्महि॥

sthūraṁ rādhaḥ śatāśvaṁ kuruṅgasya diviṣṭiṣu | rājñastveṣasya subhagasya rātiṣu turvaśeṣvamanmahi ||

Rich was the gift Kurunga gave, a hundred steeds at morning rites. Among the gifts of Turvasas we thought of him, the opulent, the splendid King.

धीभिः सातानि काण्वस्य वाजिनः प्रियमेधैरभिद्युभिः। षष्टिं सहस्रानु निर्मजामजे निर्यूथानि गवामृषिः॥

dhībhiḥ sātāni kāṇvasya vājinaḥ priyamedhairabhidyubhiḥ | ṣaṣṭiṁ sahasrānu nirmajāmaje niryūthāni gavāmṛṣiḥ ||

What by his morning songs Kanva, the powerful, hath, with the Priyamedhas, gained- 71 The herds of sixty thousand pure and spotless kine, have I, the Rsi, driven away.

वृक्षाश्चिन्मे अभिपित्वे अरारणुः। गां भजन्त मेहनाश्वं भजन्त मेहना॥

vṛkṣāścinme abhipitve arāraṇuḥ | gāṁ bhajanta mehanāśvaṁ bhajanta mehanā ||

The very trees were joyful at my coming: kine they obtained in plenty, steeds in plenty.
