सूक्त १५

इममू षु वो अतिथिमुषर्बुधं विश्वासां विशां पतिमृञ्जसे गिरा। वेतीद्दिवो जनुषा कच्चिदा शुचिर्ज्योक्चिदत्ति गर्भो यदच्युतम्॥

imamū ṣu vo atithimuṣarbudhaṁ viśvāsāṁ viśāṁ patimṛñjase girā | vetīddivo januṣā kaccidā śucirjyokcidatti garbho yadacyutam ||

WITH this my song I strive to reach this guest of yours, who wakes at early morn, the Lord of all the tribes. Each time he comes from heaven, the Pure One from of old: from ancient days the Child cats everlasting food.

मित्रं न यं सुधितं भृगवो दधुर्वनस्पतावीड्यमूर्ध्वशोचिषम्। स त्वं सुप्रीतो वीतहव्ये अद्भुत प्रशस्तिभिर्महयसे दिवेदिवे॥

mitraṁ na yaṁ sudhitaṁ bhṛgavo dadhurvanaspatāvīḍyamūrdhvaśociṣam | sa tvaṁ suprīto vītahavye adbhuta praśastibhirmahayase divedive ||

Whom, well-dis sed, the Blirgus stablished as a rriend, whom men must glorify, high-flaming in the wood. As such, most friendly, thou art every day extolled in lauds by Vitahavya, O thou wondrous God.

स त्वं दक्षस्यावृको वृधो भूरर्यः परस्यान्तरस्य तरुषः। रायः सूनो सहसो मर्त्येष्वा छर्दिर्यच्छ वीतहव्याय सप्रथो भरद्वाजाय सप्रथः॥

sa tvaṁ dakṣasyāvṛko vṛdho bhūraryaḥ parasyāntarasya taruṣaḥ | rāyaḥ sūno sahaso martyeṣvā chardiryaccha vītahavyāya sapratho bharadvājāya saprathaḥ ||

Be thou the foeless helper of the skilful man, subduer of the enemy near or far away. Bestow a wealthy home on men, O Son of Strength. Give Vitahavya riches spreading far and wide, give Bharadvaja wide-spread wealth.

द्युतानं वो अतिथिं स्वर्णरमग्निं होतारं मनुषः स्वध्वरम्। विप्रं न द्युक्षवचसं सुवृक्तिभिर्हव्यवाहमरतिं देवमृञ्जसे॥

dyutānaṁ vo atithiṁ svarṇaramagniṁ hotāraṁ manuṣaḥ svadhvaram | vipraṁ na dyukṣavacasaṁ suvṛktibhirhavyavāhamaratiṁ devamṛñjase ||

Him, your refulgent guest, Agni who comes from heaven, the Herald of mankind, well-skilled in sacred rites, Who, like a holy singer, utters heavenly words, oblation-bearer, envoy, God, I seek with hymns.

पावकया यश्चितयन्त्या कृपा क्षामन्रुरुच उषसो न भानुना। तूर्वन्न यामन्नेतशस्य नू रण आ यो घृणे न ततृषाणो अजरः॥

pāvakayā yaścitayantyā kṛpā kṣāmanruruca uṣaso na bhānunā | tūrvanna yāmannetaśasya nū raṇa ā yo ghṛṇe na tatṛṣāṇo ajaraḥ ||

Who with his purifying, eye-attracting form hath shone upon the earth as with the light of Dawn; Who speeding on, as in the fight of Etaia, cometh, untouched by age, as one athirst in heat.

अग्निमग्निं वः समिधा दुवस्यत प्रियम्प्रियं वो अतिथिं गृणीषणि। उप वो गीर्भिरमृतं विवासत देवो देवेषु वनते हि वार्यं देवो देवेषु वनते हि नो दुवः॥

agnimagniṁ vaḥ samidhā duvasyata priyampriyaṁ vo atithiṁ gṛṇīṣaṇi | upa vo gīrbhiramṛtaṁ vivāsata devo deveṣu vanate hi vāryaṁ devo deveṣu vanate hi no duvaḥ ||

Worship ye Agni, Agni, with your log of wood; praise your beloved, your beloved guest with songs. Invite ye the Immortal hither with your hymns. A God among the Gods, he loveth what is choice, loveth our service, God mid Gods.

समिद्धमग्निं समिधा गिरा गृणे शुचिं पावकं पुरो अध्वरे ध्रुवम्। विप्रं होतारं पुरुवारमद्रुहं कविं सुम्नैरीमहे जातवेदसम्॥

samiddhamagniṁ samidhā girā gṛṇe śuciṁ pāvakaṁ puro adhvare dhruvam | vipraṁ hotāraṁ puruvāramadruhaṁ kaviṁ sumnairīmahe jātavedasam ||

Agni inflamed with fuel in my song I sing, pure, Cleanser, steadlast, set in tront at sacrifice. Wise Jatavedas we implore with prayers for bliss the Priest, the holy Singer, bounteous, void of guile.

त्वां दूतमग्ने अमृतं युगेयुगे हव्यवाहं दधिरे पायुमीड्यम्। देवासश्च मर्तासश्च जागृविं विभुं विश्पतिं नमसा नि षेदिरे॥

tvāṁ dūtamagne amṛtaṁ yugeyuge havyavāhaṁ dadhire pāyumīḍyam | devāsaśca martāsaśca jāgṛviṁ vibhuṁ viśpatiṁ namasā ni ṣedire ||

Men, Agni, in each age have made thee, Deathiess One, their envoy, offering-bearer, guard adorable. With reverence Gods and mortals have established thee, the ever-watchful, omnipresent Household Lord.

विभूषन्नग्न उभयाँ अनु व्रता दूतो देवानां रजसी समीयसे। यत्ते धीतिं सुमतिमावृणीमहेऽध स्मा नस्त्रिवरूथः शिवो भव॥

vibhūṣannagna ubhayā anu vratā dūto devānāṁ rajasī samīyase | yatte dhītiṁ sumatimāvṛṇīmahe'dha smā nastrivarūthaḥ śivo bhava ||

Thou, Agni, ordering the works and ways of both, as envoy of the Gods traversest both the worlds. When we lay claim to thy regard and gracious fare, be thou to us a thriceprotecting friendly guard.

तं सुप्रतीकं सुदृशं स्वञ्चमविद्वांसो विदुष्टरं सपेम। स यक्षद्विश्वा वयुनानि विद्वान्प्र हव्यमग्निरमृतेषु वोचत्॥

taṁ supratīkaṁ sudṛśaṁ svañcamavidvāṁso viduṣṭaraṁ sapema | sa yakṣadviśvā vayunāni vidvānpra havyamagniramṛteṣu vocat ||

Him fair of face, rapid, and fair to look on, him very wise may we who know not follow. Let him who knows all rules invite for worship, Agru announce our offering to the Immortals.

तमग्ने पास्युत तं पिपर्षि यस्त आनट् कवये शूर धीतिम्। यज्ञस्य वा निशितिं वोदितिं वा तमित्पृणक्षि शवसोत राया॥

tamagne pāsyuta taṁ piparṣi yasta ānaṭ kavaye śūra dhītim | yajñasya vā niśitiṁ voditiṁ vā tamitpṛṇakṣi śavasota rāyā ||

Him, Agni, thou deliverest and savest who brings him prayer to thee the Wise, O Hero, The end of sacrifice or its inception; yea, thou endowest him with power and riches.

त्वमग्ने वनुष्यतो नि पाहि त्वमु नः सहसावन्नवद्यात्। सं त्वा ध्वस्मन्वदभ्येतु पाथः सं रयिः स्पृहयाय्यः सहस्री॥

tvamagne vanuṣyato ni pāhi tvamu naḥ sahasāvannavadyāt | saṁ tvā dhvasmanvadabhyetu pāthaḥ saṁ rayiḥ spṛhayāyyaḥ sahasrī ||

Guard us from him who would assail us, Agni; preserve us, O thou Victor, from dishonour. Here let the place of darkening come upon thee: may wealth be ours, desirable in thousands.

अग्निर्होता गृहपतिः स राजा विश्वा वेद जनिमा जातवेदाः। देवानामुत यो मर्त्यानां यजिष्ठः स प्र यजतामृतावा॥

agnirhotā gṛhapatiḥ sa rājā viśvā veda janimā jātavedāḥ | devānāmuta yo martyānāṁ yajiṣṭhaḥ sa pra yajatāmṛtāvā ||

Agni, the Priest, is King, Lord of the homestead, he, Jatayedas, knows all generations. Most skilful worshipper mid Gods and mortals, may he begin the sacrifice, the Holy.

अग्ने यदद्य विशो अध्वरस्य होतः पावकशोचे वेष्ट्वं हि यज्वा। ऋता यजासि महिना वि यद्भूर्हव्या वह यविष्ठ या ते अद्य॥

agne yadadya viśo adhvarasya hotaḥ pāvakaśoce veṣṭvaṁ hi yajvā | ṛtā yajāsi mahinā vi yadbhūrhavyā vaha yaviṣṭha yā te adya ||

Whate'er to-day thou, bright-flamed Priest, enjoyest from the man's rite-for thou art sacrificer- Worship, for duly dost thou spread in greatness: bear off thine ofrerings of to-day, Most Youthful.

अभि प्रयांसि सुधितानि हि ख्यो नि त्वा दधीत रोदसी यजध्यै। अवा नो मघवन्वाजसातावग्ने विश्वानि दुरिता तरेम ता तरेम तवावसा तरेम॥

abhi prayāṁsi sudhitāni hi khyo ni tvā dadhīta rodasī yajadhyai | avā no maghavanvājasātāvagne viśvāni duritā tarema tā tarema tavāvasā tarema ||

Look thou upon the viands duly laid for thee. Fain would he set thee here to worship Heaven and,Earth. Help us, O liberal Agni, in the strife for spoil, so that we may o'ercome all things that trouble us, o'ercome, o'ercome them with thy help.

अग्ने विश्वेभिः स्वनीक देवैरूर्णावन्तं प्रथमः सीद योनिम्। कुलायिनं घृतवन्तं सवित्रे यज्ञं नय यजमानाय साधु॥

agne viśvebhiḥ svanīka devairūrṇāvantaṁ prathamaḥ sīda yonim | kulāyinaṁ ghṛtavantaṁ savitre yajñaṁ naya yajamānāya sādhu ||

Together with all Gods, O fair-faced Agni, be seated first upon the woollined altar, Nest-like, bedewed with oil. Bear this our worship to Savitar who sacrifices rightly.

इममु त्यमथर्ववदग्निं मन्थन्ति वेधसः। यमङ्कूयन्तमानयन्नमूरं श्याव्याभ्यः॥

imamu tyamatharvavadagniṁ manthanti vedhasaḥ | yamaṅkūyantamānayannamūraṁ śyāvyābhyaḥ ||

Here the arranging priests, as did Atharvan, rub this Agni forth, Whom, not bewildered, as he moved in winding ways, they brought from gloom.

जनिष्वा देववीतये सर्वताता स्वस्तये। आ देवान्वक्ष्यमृताँ ऋतावृधो यज्ञं देवेषु पिस्पृशः॥

janiṣvā devavītaye sarvatātā svastaye | ā devānvakṣyamṛtā ṛtāvṛdho yajñaṁ deveṣu pispṛśaḥ ||

For the Gods' banquet be thou born, for full perfection and for weal. Bring the Immortal Gods who strengthen holy Law: so let our sacrifice reach the Gods.

वयमु त्वा गृहपते जनानामग्ने अकर्म समिधा बृहन्तम्। अस्थूरि नो गार्हपत्यानि सन्तु तिग्मेन नस्तेजसा सं शिशाधि॥

vayamu tvā gṛhapate janānāmagne akarma samidhā bṛhantam | asthūri no gārhapatyāni santu tigmena nastejasā saṁ śiśādhi ||

O Agni, Lord and Master of men's homesteads, with kindled fuel we have made thee mighty. Let not our household gear be found defective. Sharpen us with thy penetrating splendour.
