सूक्त ४२

मम द्विता राष्ट्रं क्षत्रियस्य विश्वायोर्विश्वे अमृता यथा नः। क्रतुं सचन्ते वरुणस्य देवा राजामि कृष्टेरुपमस्य वव्रेः॥

mama dvitā rāṣṭraṁ kṣatriyasya viśvāyorviśve amṛtā yathā naḥ | kratuṁ sacante varuṇasya devā rājāmi kṛṣṭerupamasya vavreḥ ||

I AM the royal Ruler, mine is empire, as mine who sway all life are all Immortals. Varuna's will the Gods obey and follow. I am the King of men's most lofty cover.

अहं राजा वरुणो मह्यं तान्यसुर्याणि प्रथमा धारयन्त। क्रतुं सचन्ते वरुणस्य देवा राजामि कृष्टेरुपमस्य वव्रेः॥

ahaṁ rājā varuṇo mahyaṁ tānyasuryāṇi prathamā dhārayanta | kratuṁ sacante varuṇasya devā rājāmi kṛṣṭerupamasya vavreḥ ||

I am King Varuna. To me were given these first existinghigh celestial powers. Varuna's will the Gods obey and follow. I am the King of men's most lofty cover.

अहमिन्द्रो वरुणस्ते महित्वोर्वी गभीरे रजसी सुमेके। त्वष्टेव विश्वा भुवनानि विद्वान्समैरयं रोदसी धारयं च॥

ahamindro varuṇaste mahitvorvī gabhīre rajasī sumeke | tvaṣṭeva viśvā bhuvanāni vidvānsamairayaṁ rodasī dhārayaṁ ca ||

I Varuna am Indra: in their greatness, these the two wide deep fairly-fashioned regions, These the two world-halves have I, even as Tvastar knowing all beings, joined and held together.

अहमपो अपिन्वमुक्षमाणा धारयं दिवं सदन ऋतस्य। ऋतेन पुत्रो अदितेरृतावोत त्रिधातु प्रथयद्वि भूम॥

ahamapo apinvamukṣamāṇā dhārayaṁ divaṁ sadana ṛtasya | ṛtena putro aditerṛtāvota tridhātu prathayadvi bhūma ||

I made to flow the moisture-shedding waters, and set the heaven firm in the scat of Order. By Law the Son of Aditi, Law Observer, hath spread abroad the world in threefold measure.

मां नरः स्वश्वा वाजयन्तो मां वृताः समरणे हवन्ते। कृणोम्याजिं मघवाहमिन्द्र इयर्मि रेणुमभिभूत्योजाः॥

māṁ naraḥ svaśvā vājayanto māṁ vṛtāḥ samaraṇe havante | kṛṇomyājiṁ maghavāhamindra iyarmi reṇumabhibhūtyojāḥ ||

Heroes with noble horses, fain for battle, selected warriors, call on me in combat. I Indra Maghavan, excite the conflict; I stir the dust, Lord of surpassing vigour.

अहं ता विश्वा चकरं नकिर्मा दैव्यं सहो वरते अप्रतीतम्। यन्मा सोमासो ममदन्यदुक्थोभे भयेते रजसी अपारे॥

ahaṁ tā viśvā cakaraṁ nakirmā daivyaṁ saho varate apratītam | yanmā somāso mamadanyadukthobhe bhayete rajasī apāre ||

All this I did. The Gods' own conquering power never impedeth me whom none opposeth. When lauds and Soma juice have made me joyful, both the unbounded regions are affrighted.

विदुष्टे विश्वा भुवनानि तस्य ता प्र ब्रवीषि वरुणाय वेधः। त्वं वृत्राणि शृण्विषे जघन्वान्त्वं वृताँ अरिणा इन्द्र सिन्धून्॥

viduṣṭe viśvā bhuvanāni tasya tā pra bravīṣi varuṇāya vedhaḥ | tvaṁ vṛtrāṇi śṛṇviṣe jaghanvāntvaṁ vṛtā ariṇā indra sindhūn ||

All beings know these deeds of thine thou tellest this unto Varuna, thou great Disposer! Thou art renowned as having slain the Vrtras. Thou madest flow the floods that were obstructed.

अस्माकमत्र पितरस्त आसन्सप्त ऋषयो दौर्गहे बध्यमाने। त आयजन्त त्रसदस्युमस्या इन्द्रं न वृत्रतुरमर्धदेवम्॥

asmākamatra pitarasta āsansapta ṛṣayo daurgahe badhyamāne | ta āyajanta trasadasyumasyā indraṁ na vṛtraturamardhadevam ||

Our fathers then were these, the Seven his, what time the son of Durgaha was captive. For her they gained by sacrifice Trasadasyu, a demi-god, like Indra, conquering foemen.

पुरुकुत्सानी हि वामदाशद्धव्येभिरिन्द्रावरुणा नमोभिः। अथा राजानं त्रसदस्युमस्या वृत्रहणं ददथुरर्धदेवम्॥

purukutsānī hi vāmadāśaddhavyebhirindrāvaruṇā namobhiḥ | athā rājānaṁ trasadasyumasyā vṛtrahaṇaṁ dadathurardhadevam ||

The spouse of Purukutsa gave oblations to you, O Indra-Varuna, with homage. Then unto her ye gave King Trasadasyu, the demi-god, the slayer of the foeman.

राया वयं ससवांसो मदेम हव्येन देवा यवसेन गावः। तां धेनुमिन्द्रावरुणा युवं नो विश्वाहा धत्तमनपस्फुरन्तीम्॥

rāyā vayaṁ sasavāṁso madema havyena devā yavasena gāvaḥ | tāṁ dhenumindrāvaruṇā yuvaṁ no viśvāhā dhattamanapasphurantīm ||

May we, possessing much, delight in riches, Gods in oblations and the kine in pasture; And that Milch-cow who ahrinks not from the milking, O Indra-Varuna, give to us daily.
