सूक्त ३४

इन्द्रः पूर्भिदातिरद्दासमर्कैर्विदद्वसुर्दयमानो वि शत्रून्। ब्रह्मजूतस्तन्वा वावृधानो भूरिदात्र आपृणद्रोदसी उभे॥

indraḥ pūrbhidātiraddāsamarkairvidadvasurdayamāno vi śatrūn | brahmajūtastanvā vāvṛdhāno bhūridātra āpṛṇadrodasī ubhe ||

FORT-RENDER, Lord of Wealth, dispelling foemen, Indra with lightnings hath o'ercome the Dasa. Impelled by prayer and waxen great in body, he hath filled earth and heaven, the Bounteous Giver.

मखस्य ते तविषस्य प्र जूतिमियर्मि वाचममृताय भूषन्। इन्द्र क्षितीनामसि मानुषीणां विशां दैवीनामुत पूर्वयावा॥

makhasya te taviṣasya pra jūtimiyarmi vācamamṛtāya bhūṣan | indra kṣitīnāmasi mānuṣīṇāṁ viśāṁ daivīnāmuta pūrvayāvā ||

I stimulate thy zeal, the Strong, the Hero decking my song of praise forth; Immortal. O Indra, thou art equally the Leader of heavenly hosts and human generations.

इन्द्रो वृत्रमवृणोच्छर्धनीतिः प्र मायिनाममिनाद्वर्पणीतिः। अहन्व्यंसमुशधग्वनेष्वाविर्धेना अकृणोद्राम्याणाम्॥

indro vṛtramavṛṇocchardhanītiḥ pra māyināmaminādvarpaṇītiḥ | ahanvyaṁsamuśadhagvaneṣvāvirdhenā akṛṇodrāmyāṇām ||

Leading, his band Indra encompassed Vrtra; weak grew the wily leader of enchanters. He who burns fierce in forests slaughtered Vyamsa, and made the Milch-kine of the nights apparent.

इन्द्रः स्वर्षा जनयन्नहानि जिगायोशिग्भिः पृतना अभिष्टिः। प्रारोचयन्मनवे केतुमह्नामविन्दज्ज्योतिर्बृहते रणाय॥

indraḥ svarṣā janayannahāni jigāyośigbhiḥ pṛtanā abhiṣṭiḥ | prārocayanmanave ketumahnāmavindajjyotirbṛhate raṇāya ||

Indra, light-winner, days' Creator, conquered, victorious, hostile bands with those who loved him. For man the days' bright ensign he illumined, and found the light for his joy and gladness.

इन्द्रस्तुजो बर्हणा आ विवेश नृवद्दधानो नर्या पुरूणि। अचेतयद्धिय इमा जरित्रे प्रेमं वर्णमतिरच्छुक्रमासाम्॥

indrastujo barhaṇā ā viveśa nṛvaddadhāno naryā purūṇi | acetayaddhiya imā jaritre premaṁ varṇamatiracchukramāsām ||

Forward to fiercely falling blows pressed Indra, herolike doing many hero exploits. These holy songs he taught the bard who gaised him, and widely spread these Dawns' resplendent colour.

महो महानि पनयन्त्यस्येन्द्रस्य कर्म सुकृता पुरूणि। वृजनेन वृजिनान्सं पिपेष मायाभिर्दस्यूँरभिभूत्योजाः॥

maho mahāni panayantyasyendrasya karma sukṛtā purūṇi | vṛjanena vṛjinānsaṁ pipeṣa māyābhirdasyūrabhibhūtyojāḥ ||

They laud the mighty acts of him the Mighty, the many glorious deeds performed by Indra. He in his strength, with all-surpassing prowess, through wondrous arts crushed the malignant Dasyus.

युधेन्द्रो मह्ना वरिवश्चकार देवेभ्यः सत्पतिश्चर्षणिप्राः। विवस्वतः सदने अस्य तानि विप्रा उक्थेभिः कवयो गृणन्ति॥

yudhendro mahnā varivaścakāra devebhyaḥ satpatiścarṣaṇiprāḥ | vivasvataḥ sadane asya tāni viprā ukthebhiḥ kavayo gṛṇanti ||

Lord of the brave, Indra who rules the people gave freedom to the Gods by might and battle. Wise singers glorify with chanted praises these his achievements in Vivasvan's dwelling.

सत्रासाहं वरेण्यं सहोदां ससवांसं स्वरपश्च देवीः। ससान यः पृथिवीं द्यामुतेमामिन्द्रं मदन्त्यनु धीरणासः॥

satrāsāhaṁ vareṇyaṁ sahodāṁ sasavāṁsaṁ svarapaśca devīḥ | sasāna yaḥ pṛthivīṁ dyāmutemāmindraṁ madantyanu dhīraṇāsaḥ ||

Excellent, Conqueror, the victory-giver, the winner of the light and Godlike Waters, He who hath won this broad earth and this heaven, -in Indra they rejoice who love devotions.

ससानात्याँ उत सूर्यं ससानेन्द्रः ससान पुरुभोजसं गाम्। हिरण्ययमुत भोगं ससान हत्वी दस्यून्प्रार्यं वर्णमावत्॥

sasānātyā uta sūryaṁ sasānendraḥ sasāna purubhojasaṁ gām | hiraṇyayamuta bhogaṁ sasāna hatvī dasyūnprāryaṁ varṇamāvat ||

He gained possession of the Sun and Horses, Indra obtained the Cow who feedeth many. Treasure of gold he won; he smote the Dasyus, and gave protection to the Aryan colour.

इन्द्र ओषधीरसनोदहानि वनस्पतीँरसनोदन्तरिक्षम्। बिभेद वलं नुनुदे विवाचोऽथाभवद्दमिताभिक्रतूनाम्॥

indra oṣadhīrasanodahāni vanaspatīrasanodantarikṣam | bibheda valaṁ nunude vivāco'thābhavaddamitābhikratūnām ||

He took the plants and days for his possession; he gained the forest trees and air's mid-region. Vala he cleft, and chased away opponents: thus was he tamer of the overweening.

शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ। शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्॥

śunaṁ huvema maghavānamindramasminbhare nṛtamaṁ vājasātau | śṛṇvantamugramūtaye samatsu ghnantaṁ vṛtrāṇi saṁjitaṁ dhanānām ||

Call we on Maghavan, auspicious Indra, best Hero in the fight where spoil is gathered, The Strong, who listens, who gives aid in battles, who slays the Vrtras, wins and gathers treasures.
