सूक्त ७

प्र य आरुः शितिपृष्ठस्य धासेरा मातरा विविशुः सप्त वाणीः। परिक्षिता पितरा सं चरेते प्र सर्स्राते दीर्घमायुः प्रयक्षे॥

pra ya āruḥ śitipṛṣṭhasya dhāserā mātarā viviśuḥ sapta vāṇīḥ | parikṣitā pitarā saṁ carete pra sarsrāte dīrghamāyuḥ prayakṣe ||

THE seven tones risen from the whitebacked viand have made their way between the pair of Mothers. Both circumjacent Parents come together to yield us length of days they hasten forward.

दिवक्षसो धेनवो वृष्णो अश्वा देवीरा तस्थौ मधुमद्वहन्तीः। ऋतस्य त्वा सदसि क्षेमयन्तं पर्येका चरति वर्तनिं गौः॥

divakṣaso dhenavo vṛṣṇo aśvā devīrā tasthau madhumadvahantīḥ | ṛtasya tvā sadasi kṣemayantaṁ paryekā carati vartaniṁ gauḥ ||

The Male who dwells in heaven hath Mares and Milchkine: he came to Goddesses who bring sweet treasure. To thee safe resting in the seat of Order the Cow alone upon her way proceedeth.

आ सीमरोहत्सुयमा भवन्तीः पतिश्चिकित्वान्रयिविद्रयीणाम्। प्र नीलपृष्ठो अतसस्य धासेस्ता अवासयत्पुरुधप्रतीकः॥

ā sīmarohatsuyamā bhavantīḥ patiścikitvānrayividrayīṇām | pra nīlapṛṣṭho atasasya dhāsestā avāsayatpurudhapratīkaḥ ||

Wise Master, wealthy finder-out of riches, he mounted those who may with case be guided. He, dark-backed, manifold with varied aspect, hath made them burst forth from their food the brush- wood.

महि त्वाष्ट्रमूर्जयन्तीरजुर्यं स्तभूयमानं वहतो वहन्ति। व्यङ्गेभिर्दिद्युतानः सधस्थ एकामिव रोदसी आ विवेश॥

mahi tvāṣṭramūrjayantīrajuryaṁ stabhūyamānaṁ vahato vahanti | vyaṅgebhirdidyutānaḥ sadhastha ekāmiva rodasī ā viveśa ||

Strength-giving streams bear hither him eternal, fain to support the mighty work. of Tvastar. He, flashing in his home with all his members, hath entered both the worlds as they were single.

जानन्ति वृष्णो अरुषस्य शेवमुत ब्रध्नस्य शासने रणन्ति। दिवोरुचः सुरुचो रोचमाना इळा येषां गण्या माहिना गीः॥

jānanti vṛṣṇo aruṣasya śevamuta bradhnasya śāsane raṇanti | divorucaḥ suruco rocamānā iḻā yeṣāṁ gaṇyā māhinā gīḥ ||

They know the red Bull's blessing, and are joyful under the flaming-coloured Lord's dominion: They who give shine from heavenwith fair effulgence, whose lofty song like Ila must be honoured.

उतो पितृभ्यां प्रविदानु घोषं महो महद्भ्यामनयन्त शूषम्। उक्षा ह यत्र परि धानमक्तोरनु स्वं धाम जरितुर्ववक्ष॥

uto pitṛbhyāṁ pravidānu ghoṣaṁ maho mahadbhyāmanayanta śūṣam | ukṣā ha yatra pari dhānamaktoranu svaṁ dhāma jariturvavakṣa ||

Yea, by tradition from the ancient sages they brought great strength from the two mighty Parents, To where the singer's Bull, the night's dispeller, after his proper law hath waxen stronger.

अध्वर्युभिः पञ्चभिः सप्त विप्राः प्रियं रक्षन्ते निहितं पदं वेः। प्राञ्चो मदन्त्युक्षणो अजुर्या देवा देवानामनु हि व्रता गुः॥

adhvaryubhiḥ pañcabhiḥ sapta viprāḥ priyaṁ rakṣante nihitaṁ padaṁ veḥ | prāñco madantyukṣaṇo ajuryā devā devānāmanu hi vratā guḥ ||

Seven holy singers guard with five Adhvaryus the Bird's beloved firmly-settled station. The willing Bulls, untouched by old, rejoice them: as Gods themselves the ways of Gods they follow.

दैव्या होतारा प्रथमा न्यृञ्जे सप्त पृक्षासः स्वधया मदन्ति। ऋतं शंसन्त ऋतमित्त आहुरनु व्रतं व्रतपा दीध्यानाः॥

daivyā hotārā prathamā nyṛñje sapta pṛkṣāsaḥ svadhayā madanti | ṛtaṁ śaṁsanta ṛtamitta āhuranu vrataṁ vratapā dīdhyānāḥ ||

I crave the grace of heaven's two chief Invokers: the seven swift steeds joy in their wonted manner. These speak of truth, praising the Truth Eternal, thinking on Order as the guards of Order.

वृषायन्ते महे अत्याय पूर्वीर्वृष्णे चित्राय रश्मयः सुयामाः। देव होतर्मन्द्रतरश्चिकित्वान्महो देवान्रोदसी एह वक्षि॥

vṛṣāyante mahe atyāya pūrvīrvṛṣṇe citrāya raśmayaḥ suyāmāḥ | deva hotarmandrataraścikitvānmaho devānrodasī eha vakṣi ||

The many seek the great Steed as a stallion: the reins obey the Lord of varied colour. O heavenly Priest, most pleasant, full of wisdom, bring the great Gods to us, and Earth and Heaven.

पृक्षप्रयजो द्रविणः सुवाचः सुकेतव उषसो रेवदूषुः। उतो चिदग्ने महिना पृथिव्याः कृतं चिदेनः सं महे दशस्य॥

pṛkṣaprayajo draviṇaḥ suvācaḥ suketava uṣaso revadūṣuḥ | uto cidagne mahinā pṛthivyāḥ kṛtaṁ cidenaḥ saṁ mahe daśasya ||

Rich Lord, the Mornings have gleamed forth in splendour, fair-rayed, fair-speaking, worshipped with all viands, Yea, with the glory of the earth, O Agni. Forgive us, for our weal, e'en sin cornmitted.

इळामग्ने पुरुदंसं सनिं गोः शश्वत्तमं हवमानाय साध। स्यान्नः सूनुस्तनयो विजावाग्ने सा ते सुमतिर्भूत्वस्मे॥

iḻāmagne purudaṁsaṁ saniṁ goḥ śaśvattamaṁ havamānāya sādha | syānnaḥ sūnustanayo vijāvāgne sā te sumatirbhūtvasme ||

As holy food, Agni, to thine invoker, give wealth in cattle, lasting, rich in marvels. To us be born a son, and spreading offspring Agni, be this thy gracious will to usward.
