सूक्त ४

समित्समित्सुमना बोध्यस्मे शुचाशुचा सुमतिं रासि वस्वः। आ देव देवान्यजथाय वक्षि सखा सखीन्सुमना यक्ष्यग्ने॥

samitsamitsumanā bodhyasme śucāśucā sumatiṁ rāsi vasvaḥ | ā deva devānyajathāya vakṣi sakhā sakhīnsumanā yakṣyagne ||

BE friendly with each kindled log of fuel, with every flash bestow the boon of riches. Bring thou the Gods, O God, unto our worship: serve, well-inclined, as Friend thy friends, O Agni.

यं देवासस्त्रिरहन्नायजन्ते दिवेदिवे वरुणो मित्रो अग्निः। सेमं यज्ञं मधुमन्तं कृधी नस्तनूनपाद्घृतयोनिं विधन्तम्॥

yaṁ devāsastrirahannāyajante divedive varuṇo mitro agniḥ | semaṁ yajñaṁ madhumantaṁ kṛdhī nastanūnapādghṛtayoniṁ vidhantam ||

Agni whom daily Varuna and Mitra the Gods bring thrice a day to this our worship, Tanunapat, enrich with meath our service that dwells with holy oil, that offers honour.

प्र दीधितिर्विश्ववारा जिगाति होतारमिळः प्रथमं यजध्यै। अच्छा नमोभिर्वृषभं वन्दध्यै स देवान्यक्षदिषितो यजीयान्॥

pra dīdhitirviśvavārā jigāti hotāramiḻaḥ prathamaṁ yajadhyai | acchā namobhirvṛṣabhaṁ vandadhyai sa devānyakṣadiṣito yajīyān ||

The thought that bringeth every boon proceedeth to worship first the Priest of the libation, That we may greet the Strong One with our homage. Urged, may he bring the Gods, best Sacrificer.

ऊर्ध्वो वां गातुरध्वरे अकार्यूर्ध्वा शोचींषि प्रस्थिता रजांसि। दिवो वा नाभा न्यसादि होता स्तृणीमहि देवव्यचा वि बर्हिः॥

ūrdhvo vāṁ gāturadhvare akāryūrdhvā śocīṁṣi prasthitā rajāṁsi | divo vā nābhā nyasādi hotā stṛṇīmahi devavyacā vi barhiḥ ||

On high your way to sacrifice was made ready; the radiant flames went upward to the regions. Full in the midst of heaven the Priest is seated: sirew we the sacred grass where Gods may rest them.

सप्त होत्राणि मनसा वृणाना इन्वन्तो विश्वं प्रति यन्नृतेन। नृपेशसो विदथेषु प्र जाता अभीमं यज्ञं वि चरन्त पूर्वीः॥

sapta hotrāṇi manasā vṛṇānā invanto viśvaṁ prati yannṛtena | nṛpeśaso vidatheṣu pra jātā abhīmaṁ yajñaṁ vi caranta pūrvīḥ ||

Claiming in mind the seven priests' burntoblations, inciting all, they came in settled order. To this our sacrifice approach the many who show in hero beauty at assemblies.

आ भन्दमाने उषसा उपाके उत स्मयेते तन्वा विरूपे। यथा नो मित्रो वरुणो जुजोषदिन्द्रो मरुत्वाँ उत वा महोभिः॥

ā bhandamāne uṣasā upāke uta smayete tanvā virūpe | yathā no mitro varuṇo jujoṣadindro marutvā uta vā mahobhiḥ ||

Night and Dawn, lauded, hither come together, both smiling, different are their forms in colour, That Varuna and Mitra may accept us, and Indra, girt by Maruts, with his glories.

दैव्या होतारा प्रथमा न्यृञ्जे सप्त पृक्षासः स्वधया मदन्ति। ऋतं शंसन्त ऋतमित्त आहुरनु व्रतं व्रतपा दीध्यानाः॥

daivyā hotārā prathamā nyṛñje sapta pṛkṣāsaḥ svadhayā madanti | ṛtaṁ śaṁsanta ṛtamitta āhuranu vrataṁ vratapā dīdhyānāḥ ||

I crave the grace of heaven's two chief Invokers: the seven swift steeds joy in their wonted manner. These speak of truth, praising the truth eternal, thinking on Order as the guards of Order.

आ भारती भारतीभिः सजोषा इळा देवैर्मनुष्येभिरग्निः। सरस्वती सारस्वतेभिरर्वाक्तिस्रो देवीर्बर्हिरेदं सदन्तु॥

ā bhāratī bhāratībhiḥ sajoṣā iḻā devairmanuṣyebhiragniḥ | sarasvatī sārasvatebhirarvāktisro devīrbarhiredaṁ sadantu ||

May Bharati with all her Sisters, Ila accordant with the Gods, with mortalls Agni, Sarasvati with all her kindred Rivers, come to this grass, Three Goddesses, and seat them.

तन्नस्तुरीपमध पोषयित्नु देव त्वष्टर्वि रराणः स्यस्व। यतो वीरः कर्मण्यः सुदक्षो युक्तग्रावा जायते देवकामः॥

tannasturīpamadha poṣayitnu deva tvaṣṭarvi rarāṇaḥ syasva | yato vīraḥ karmaṇyaḥ sudakṣo yuktagrāvā jāyate devakāmaḥ ||

Well pleased with us do thou O God, O Tvastar, give ready issue to our procreant vigour, Whence springs the hero, powerful, skilled in action, lover of Gods, adjuster of the press-stones.

वनस्पतेऽव सृजोप देवानग्निर्हविः शमिता सूदयाति। सेदु होता सत्यतरो यजाति यथा देवानां जनिमानि वेद॥

vanaspate'va sṛjopa devānagnirhaviḥ śamitā sūdayāti | sedu hotā satyataro yajāti yathā devānāṁ janimāni veda ||

Send to the Gods the oblation, Lord of Forests; and let the Immolator, Agni, dress it. He as the truer Priest shall offer worship, for the Gods' generations well he knoweth.

आ याह्यग्ने समिधानो अर्वाङिन्द्रेण देवैः सरथं तुरेभिः। बर्हिर्न आस्तामदितिः सुपुत्रा स्वाहा देवा अमृता मादयन्ताम्॥

ā yāhyagne samidhāno arvāṅindreṇa devaiḥ sarathaṁ turebhiḥ | barhirna āstāmaditiḥ suputrā svāhā devā amṛtā mādayantām ||

Come thou to us, O Agni, duly kindled, together with the potent Gods and Indra. On this our grass sit Aditi, happy Mother, and let our Hail delight the Gods Immortal.
