सूक्त १६

प्र वः सतां ज्येष्ठतमाय सुष्टुतिमग्नाविव समिधाने हविर्भरे। इन्द्रमजुर्यं जरयन्तमुक्षितं सनाद्युवानमवसे हवामहे॥

pra vaḥ satāṁ jyeṣṭhatamāya suṣṭutimagnāviva samidhāne havirbhare | indramajuryaṁ jarayantamukṣitaṁ sanādyuvānamavase havāmahe ||

To him, your own, the best among the good, I bring eulogy, like oblation in the kindled fire. We invocate for help Indra untouched by eld, who maketh all decay, strengthened, for ever young.

यस्मादिन्द्राद्बृहतः किं चनेमृते विश्वान्यस्मिन्सम्भृताधि वीर्या। जठरे सोमं तन्वी सहो महो हस्ते वज्रं भरति शीर्षणि क्रतुम्॥

yasmādindrādbṛhataḥ kiṁ canemṛte viśvānyasminsambhṛtādhi vīryā | jaṭhare somaṁ tanvī saho maho haste vajraṁ bharati śīrṣaṇi kratum ||

Without whom naught exists, Indra the Lofty One; in whom alone all powers heroic are combined. The Soma is within him, in his frame vast strength, the thunder in his hand and wisdom in his head.

न क्षोणीभ्यां परिभ्वे त इन्द्रियं न समुद्रैः पर्वतैरिन्द्र ते रथः। न ते वज्रमन्वश्नोति कश्चन यदाशुभिः पतसि योजना पुरु॥

na kṣoṇībhyāṁ paribhve ta indriyaṁ na samudraiḥ parvatairindra te rathaḥ | na te vajramanvaśnoti kaścana yadāśubhiḥ patasi yojanā puru ||

Not by both worlds is thine own power to be surpassed, nor may thy car be stayed by mountains or by seas. None cometh near, O Indra, to thy thunderbolt, when with swift steeds thou fliest over many a league.

विश्वे ह्यस्मै यजताय धृष्णवे क्रतुं भरन्ति वृषभाय सश्चते। वृषा यजस्व हविषा विदुष्टरः पिबेन्द्र सोमं वृषभेण भानुना॥

viśve hyasmai yajatāya dhṛṣṇave kratuṁ bharanti vṛṣabhāya saścate | vṛṣā yajasva haviṣā viduṣṭaraḥ pibendra somaṁ vṛṣabheṇa bhānunā ||

For all men bring their will to him the Resolute, to him the Holy One, to him the Strong they cleave. Pay worship with oblation, strong and passing wise. Drink thou the Soma, Indra, through the mighty blaze.

वृष्णः कोशः पवते मध्व ऊर्मिर्वृषभान्नाय वृषभाय पातवे। वृषणाध्वर्यू वृषभासो अद्रयो वृषणं सोमं वृषभाय सुष्वति॥

vṛṣṇaḥ kośaḥ pavate madhva ūrmirvṛṣabhānnāya vṛṣabhāya pātave | vṛṣaṇādhvaryū vṛṣabhāso adrayo vṛṣaṇaṁ somaṁ vṛṣabhāya suṣvati ||

The vessel of the strong flows forth, the flood of meath, unto the Strong who feeds upon the strong, for drink, Strong are the two Adhvaryus, strong are both the stones. They press the Soma that is strong for him the Strong.

वृषा ते वज्र उत ते वृषा रथो वृषणा हरी वृषभाण्यायुधा। वृष्णो मदस्य वृषभ त्वमीशिष इन्द्र सोमस्य वृषभस्य तृप्णुहि॥

vṛṣā te vajra uta te vṛṣā ratho vṛṣaṇā harī vṛṣabhāṇyāyudhā | vṛṣṇo madasya vṛṣabha tvamīśiṣa indra somasya vṛṣabhasya tṛpṇuhi ||

Strong is thy thunderbolt, yea, and thy car is strong; strong are thy Bay Steeds and thy weapons powerful. Thou, Indra, Bull, art Lord of the strong gladdening drink. with the strong Soma, Indra, satisfy thyself.

प्र ते नावं न समने वचस्युवं ब्रह्मणा यामि सवनेषु दाधृषिः। कुविन्नो अस्य वचसो निबोधिषदिन्द्रमुत्सं न वसुनः सिचामहे॥

pra te nāvaṁ na samane vacasyuvaṁ brahmaṇā yāmi savaneṣu dādhṛṣiḥ | kuvinno asya vacaso nibodhiṣadindramutsaṁ na vasunaḥ sicāmahe ||

I, bold by prayer, come near thee in thy sacred rites, thee like a saving ship, thee shouting in the war. Verily he will hear and mark this word of ours: we will pour Indra forth as 'twere a spring of wealth.

पुरा सम्बाधादभ्या ववृत्स्व नो धेनुर्न वत्सं यवसस्य पिप्युषी। सकृत्सु ते सुमतिभिः शतक्रतो सं पत्नीभिर्न वृषणो नसीमहि॥

purā sambādhādabhyā vavṛtsva no dhenurna vatsaṁ yavasasya pipyuṣī | sakṛtsu te sumatibhiḥ śatakrato saṁ patnībhirna vṛṣaṇo nasīmahi ||

Turn thee unto us ere calamity come nigh, as a cow full of pasture turns her to her calf. Lord of a Hundred Powers, may we once firmly cling to thy fair favours even as husbands to their wives.

नूनं सा ते प्रति वरं जरित्रे दुहीयदिन्द्र दक्षिणा मघोनी। शिक्षा स्तोतृभ्यो माति धग्भगो नो बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः॥

nūnaṁ sā te prati varaṁ jaritre duhīyadindra dakṣiṇā maghonī | śikṣā stotṛbhyo māti dhagbhago no bṛhadvadema vidathe suvīrāḥ ||

Now let that wealthy Cow of thine, O Indra, yield in return a boon to him who lauds thee. Give to thy praisers: let not fortune fail us. Loud may we speak, with heroes, in assembly.
