सूक्त ११८

अग्ने हंसि न्यत्रिणं दीद्यन्मर्त्येष्वा। स्वे क्षये शुचिव्रत॥

agne haṁsi nyatriṇaṁ dīdyanmartyeṣvā | sve kṣaye śucivrata ||

AGNI, refulgent among men thou slayest the devouring fiend, Bright Ruler in thine own abode.

उत्तिष्ठसि स्वाहुतो घृतानि प्रति मोदसे। यत्त्वा स्रुचः समस्थिरन्॥

uttiṣṭhasi svāhuto ghṛtāni prati modase | yattvā srucaḥ samasthiran ||

Thou springest up when worshipped well the drops of butter are thy joy When ladies are brought near to thee.

स आहुतो वि रोचतेऽग्निरीळेन्यो गिरा। स्रुचा प्रतीकमज्यते॥

sa āhuto vi rocate'gnirīḻenyo girā | srucā pratīkamajyate ||

Honoured with gifts he shines afar, Agni adorable with song: The dripping ladle balms his face.

घृतेनाग्निः समज्यते मधुप्रतीक आहुतः। रोचमानो विभावसुः॥

ghṛtenāgniḥ samajyate madhupratīka āhutaḥ | rocamāno vibhāvasuḥ ||

Agni with honey in his mouth, honoured with gifts, is balmed with oil, Refulgent in his wealth of light.

जरमाणः समिध्यसे देवेभ्यो हव्यवाहन। तं त्वा हवन्त मर्त्याः॥

jaramāṇaḥ samidhyase devebhyo havyavāhana | taṁ tvā havanta martyāḥ ||

Praised by our hymns thou kindlest thee, Oblation-bearer, for the Gods As such do mortals call on thee.

तं मर्ता अमर्त्यं घृतेनाग्निं सपर्यत। अदाभ्यं गृहपतिम्॥

taṁ martā amartyaṁ ghṛtenāgniṁ saparyata | adābhyaṁ gṛhapatim ||

To that Immortal Agni pay worship with oil, ye mortal men,- Lord of the house, whom none deceives.

अदाभ्येन शोचिषाग्ने रक्षस्त्वं दह। गोपा ऋतस्य दीदिहि॥

adābhyena śociṣāgne rakṣastvaṁ daha | gopā ṛtasya dīdihi ||

O Agni, burn the Raksasas with thine unconquerable flame Shine guardian of Eternal Law.

स त्वमग्ने प्रतीकेन प्रत्योष यातुधान्यः। उरुक्षयेषु दीद्यत्॥

sa tvamagne pratīkena pratyoṣa yātudhānyaḥ | urukṣayeṣu dīdyat ||

So, Agni, with thy glowing face burn fierce against the female fiends, Shining among Uruksayas.

तं त्वा गीर्भिरुरुक्षया हव्यवाहं समीधिरे। यजिष्ठं मानुषे जने॥

taṁ tvā gīrbhirurukṣayā havyavāhaṁ samīdhire | yajiṣṭhaṁ mānuṣe jane ||

Uruksayas have kindled thee, Oblation-bearer, thee, with hymns. Best Worshipper among mankind.
