सूक्त १११

मनीषिणः प्र भरध्वं मनीषां यथायथा मतयः सन्ति नृणाम्। इन्द्रं सत्यैरेरयामा कृतेभिः स हि वीरो गिर्वणस्युर्विदानः॥

manīṣiṇaḥ pra bharadhvaṁ manīṣāṁ yathāyathā matayaḥ santi nṛṇām | indraṁ satyairerayāmā kṛtebhiḥ sa hi vīro girvaṇasyurvidānaḥ ||

BRING forth your sacred song ye prudent singers, even as are the thoughts of human beings. Let us draw Indra with true deeds anear us: he loves our songs, the Hero, and is potent.

ऋतस्य हि सदसो धीतिरद्यौत्सं गार्ष्टेयो वृषभो गोभिरानट्। उदतिष्ठत्तविषेणा रवेण महान्ति चित्सं विव्याचा रजांसि॥

ṛtasya hi sadaso dhītiradyautsaṁ gārṣṭeyo vṛṣabho gobhirānaṭ | udatiṣṭhattaviṣeṇā raveṇa mahānti citsaṁ vivyācā rajāṁsi ||

The hymn shone brightly from the seat of worship: to the kine came the Bull, the Heifer's Offipring With mighty bellowing hath he arisen, and hath pervaded even the spacious regions.

इन्द्रः किल श्रुत्या अस्य वेद स हि जिष्णुः पथिकृत्सूर्याय। आन्मेनां कृण्वन्नच्युतो भुवद्गोः पतिर्दिवः सनजा अप्रतीतः॥

indraḥ kila śrutyā asya veda sa hi jiṣṇuḥ pathikṛtsūryāya | ānmenāṁ kṛṇvannacyuto bhuvadgoḥ patirdivaḥ sanajā apratītaḥ ||

Indra knows, verily, how to hear our singing, for he, victorious, made a path for Surya. He made the Cow, and be became the Sovran of Heaven, primeval, matchless, and unshaken.

इन्द्रो मह्ना महतो अर्णवस्य व्रतामिनादङ्गिरोभिर्गृणानः। पुरूणि चिन्नि तताना रजांसि दाधार यो धरुणं सत्यताता॥

indro mahnā mahato arṇavasya vratāminādaṅgirobhirgṛṇānaḥ | purūṇi cinni tatānā rajāṁsi dādhāra yo dharuṇaṁ satyatātā ||

Praised by Angirases, Indra demolished with might the works of the great watery monster Full many regions, too, hath he pervaded, and by his truth supported earth's foundation.

इन्द्रो दिवः प्रतिमानं पृथिव्या विश्वा वेद सवना हन्ति शुष्णम्। महीं चिद्द्यामातनोत्सूर्येण चास्कम्भ चित्कम्भनेन स्कभीयान्॥

indro divaḥ pratimānaṁ pṛthivyā viśvā veda savanā hanti śuṣṇam | mahīṁ ciddyāmātanotsūryeṇa cāskambha citkambhanena skabhīyān ||

The counterpart of heaven and earth is Indra: he knoweth all libations, slayeth Susna. The vast sky with the Sun hath he extended, and, best otpillars, stayed it with a pillar.

वज्रेण हि वृत्रहा वृत्रमस्तरदेवस्य शूशुवानस्य मायाः। वि धृष्णो अत्र धृषता जघन्थाथाभवो मघवन्बाह्वोजाः॥

vajreṇa hi vṛtrahā vṛtramastaradevasya śūśuvānasya māyāḥ | vi dhṛṣṇo atra dhṛṣatā jaghanthāthābhavo maghavanbāhvojāḥ ||

The Vrtra-slaver with his bolt felled Vrtra: the magic of the godless, waxen mighty, Here hast thou, Bold Assailant, boldly conquered. Yea, then thine arms, O Maghavan, were potent.

सचन्त यदुषसः सूर्येण चित्रामस्य केतवो रामविन्दन्। आ यन्नक्षत्रं ददृशे दिवो न पुनर्यतो नकिरद्धा नु वेद॥

sacanta yaduṣasaḥ sūryeṇa citrāmasya ketavo rāmavindan | ā yannakṣatraṁ dadṛśe divo na punaryato nakiraddhā nu veda ||

When the Dawns come attendant upon Surya their rays discover wealth of divers colours. The Star of heaven is seen as 'twere approaching: none knoweth aught of it as it departeth.

दूरं किल प्रथमा जग्मुरासामिन्द्रस्य याः प्रसवे सस्रुरापः। क्व स्विदग्रं क्व बुध्न आसामापो मध्यं क्व वो नूनमन्तः॥

dūraṁ kila prathamā jagmurāsāmindrasya yāḥ prasave sasrurāpaḥ | kva svidagraṁ kva budhna āsāmāpo madhyaṁ kva vo nūnamantaḥ ||

Far have they gone, the first of all these waters, the waters that flowed forth when Indra sent them. Where is their spring, and where is their foundation? Where now, ye Waters, is your inmost centre?

सृजः सिन्धूँरहिना जग्रसानाँ आदिदेताः प्र विविज्रे जवेन। मुमुक्षमाणा उत या मुमुच्रेऽधेदेता न रमन्ते नितिक्ताः॥

sṛjaḥ sindhūrahinā jagrasānā ādidetāḥ pra vivijre javena | mumukṣamāṇā uta yā mumucre'dhedetā na ramante nitiktāḥ ||

Thou didst free rivers swallowed by the Dragon; and rapidly they set themselves in motion, Those that were loosed and those that longed for freedom. Excited now to speed they run unresting.

सध्रीचीः सिन्धुमुशतीरिवायन्सनाज्जार आरितः पूर्भिदासाम्। अस्तमा ते पार्थिवा वसून्यस्मे जग्मुः सूनृता इन्द्र पूर्वीः॥

sadhrīcīḥ sindhumuśatīrivāyansanājjāra āritaḥ pūrbhidāsām | astamā te pārthivā vasūnyasme jagmuḥ sūnṛtā indra pūrvīḥ ||

Yearning together they have sped to Sindhu: the Fort-destroyer, praised, of old, hath loved them. Indra, may thy terrestrial treasures reach us, and our full songs of joy approach thy dwelling.
