सूक्त ६७

इमां धियं सप्तशीर्ष्णीं पिता न ऋतप्रजातां बृहतीमविन्दत्। तुरीयं स्विज्जनयद्विश्वजन्योऽयास्य उक्थमिन्द्राय शंसन्॥

imāṁ dhiyaṁ saptaśīrṣṇīṁ pitā na ṛtaprajātāṁ bṛhatīmavindat | turīyaṁ svijjanayadviśvajanyo'yāsya ukthamindrāya śaṁsan ||

THIS holy hymn, sublime and sevenheaded, sprung from eternal Law, our sire discovered. Ayasya, friend of all men, hath engendered the fourth hymn as he sang his laud to Indra.

ऋतं शंसन्त ऋजु दीध्याना दिवस्पुत्रासो असुरस्य वीराः। विप्रं पदमङ्गिरसो दधाना यज्ञस्य धाम प्रथमं मनन्त॥

ṛtaṁ śaṁsanta ṛju dīdhyānā divasputrāso asurasya vīrāḥ | vipraṁ padamaṅgiraso dadhānā yajñasya dhāma prathamaṁ mananta ||

Thinking aright, praising eternal Order, the sons of Dyaus the Asura, those heroes, Angirases, holding the rank of sages, first honoured sacrifice's holy statute.

हंसैरिव सखिभिर्वावदद्भिरश्मन्मयानि नहना व्यस्यन्। बृहस्पतिरभिकनिक्रदद्गा उत प्रास्तौदुच्च विद्वाँ अगायत्॥

haṁsairiva sakhibhirvāvadadbhiraśmanmayāni nahanā vyasyan | bṛhaspatirabhikanikradadgā uta prāstauducca vidvā agāyat ||

Girt by his friends who cried with swanlike voices, bursting the stony barriers of the prison, Brhaspati spake in thunder to the cattle, and uttered praise and song when he had found them.

अवो द्वाभ्यां पर एकया गा गुहा तिष्ठन्तीरनृतस्य सेतौ। बृहस्पतिस्तमसि ज्योतिरिच्छन्नुदुस्रा आकर्वि हि तिस्र आवः॥

avo dvābhyāṁ para ekayā gā guhā tiṣṭhantīranṛtasya setau | bṛhaspatistamasi jyotiricchannudusrā ākarvi hi tisra āvaḥ ||

Apart from one, away from two above him, he drave the kine that stood in bonds of falsehood. Brhaspati, seeking light amid the darkness, drave forth the bright cows: three he made apparent.

विभिद्या पुरं शयथेमपाचीं निस्त्रीणि साकमुदधेरकृन्तत्। बृहस्पतिरुषसं सूर्यं गामर्कं विवेद स्तनयन्निव द्यौः॥

vibhidyā puraṁ śayathemapācīṁ nistrīṇi sākamudadherakṛntat | bṛhaspatiruṣasaṁ sūryaṁ gāmarkaṁ viveda stanayanniva dyauḥ ||

When he had cleft the lairs and western castle, he cut off three from him who held the waters. Brhaspati discovered, while he thundered like Dyaus, the dawn, the Sun, the cow, the lightning.

इन्द्रो वलं रक्षितारं दुघानां करेणेव वि चकर्ता रवेण। स्वेदाञ्जिभिराशिरमिच्छमानोऽरोदयत्पणिमा गा अमुष्णात्॥

indro valaṁ rakṣitāraṁ dughānāṁ kareṇeva vi cakartā raveṇa | svedāñjibhirāśiramicchamāno'rodayatpaṇimā gā amuṣṇāt ||

As with a hand, so with his roaring Indra cleft Vala through, the guardian of the cattle. Seeking the milk-draught with sweatshining comrades he stole the Pani's kine and left him weeping.

स ईं सत्येभिः सखिभिः शुचद्भिर्गोधायसं वि धनसैरदर्दः। ब्रह्मणस्पतिर्वृषभिर्वराहैर्घर्मस्वेदेभिर्द्रविणं व्यानट्॥

sa īṁ satyebhiḥ sakhibhiḥ śucadbhirgodhāyasaṁ vi dhanasairadardaḥ | brahmaṇaspatirvṛṣabhirvarāhairgharmasvedebhirdraviṇaṁ vyānaṭ ||

He with bright faithful Friends, winners of booty, hath rent the milker of the cows asunder. Brhaspati with wild boars strong and mighty, sweating with heat, hath gained a rich possession.

ते सत्येन मनसा गोपतिं गा इयानास इषणयन्त धीभिः। बृहस्पतिर्मिथोअवद्यपेभिरुदुस्रिया असृजत स्वयुग्भिः॥

te satyena manasā gopatiṁ gā iyānāsa iṣaṇayanta dhībhiḥ | bṛhaspatirmithoavadyapebhirudusriyā asṛjata svayugbhiḥ ||

They, longing for the kine, with faithful spirit incited with their hymns the Lord of cattle. Brhaspati freed the radiant cows with comrades self-yoked, averting shame from one another.

तं वर्धयन्तो मतिभिः शिवाभिः सिंहमिव नानदतं सधस्थे। बृहस्पतिं वृषणं शूरसातौ भरेभरे अनु मदेम जिष्णुम्॥

taṁ vardhayanto matibhiḥ śivābhiḥ siṁhamiva nānadataṁ sadhasthe | bṛhaspatiṁ vṛṣaṇaṁ śūrasātau bharebhare anu madema jiṣṇum ||

In our assembly with auspicious praises exalting him who roareth like a lion, Maywe, in every fight where heroes conquer, rejoice in strong Brhaspati the Victor.

यदा वाजमसनद्विश्वरूपमा द्यामरुक्षदुत्तराणि सद्म। बृहस्पतिं वृषणं वर्धयन्तो नाना सन्तो बिभ्रतो ज्योतिरासा॥

yadā vājamasanadviśvarūpamā dyāmarukṣaduttarāṇi sadma | bṛhaspatiṁ vṛṣaṇaṁ vardhayanto nānā santo bibhrato jyotirāsā ||

When he had won him every sort of booty and gone to heaven and its most lofty mansions, Men praised Brhaspati the Mighty, bringing the light within their mouths from sundry places.

सत्यामाशिषं कृणुता वयोधै कीरिं चिद्ध्यवथ स्वेभिरेवैः। पश्चा मृधो अप भवन्तु विश्वास्तद्रोदसी शृणुतं विश्वमिन्वे॥

satyāmāśiṣaṁ kṛṇutā vayodhai kīriṁ ciddhyavatha svebhirevaiḥ | paścā mṛdho apa bhavantu viśvāstadrodasī śṛṇutaṁ viśvaminve ||

Fulfil the prayer that begs for vital vigour: aid in your wonted manner even the humble. Let all our foes be turned and driven backward. Hear this, O Heaven and Earth, ye All-producers.

इन्द्रो मह्ना महतो अर्णवस्य वि मूर्धानमभिनदर्बुदस्य। अहन्नहिमरिणात्सप्त सिन्धून्देवैर्द्यावापृथिवी प्रावतं नः॥

indro mahnā mahato arṇavasya vi mūrdhānamabhinadarbudasya | ahannahimariṇātsapta sindhūndevairdyāvāpṛthivī prāvataṁ naḥ ||

Indra with mighty strength cleft asunder the head of Arbuda the watery monster, Slain Ahi, and set free the Seven Rivers. O Heaven and Earth, with all the Gods protect us.
