सूक्त ५३

यमैच्छाम मनसा सोऽयमागाद्यज्ञस्य विद्वान्परुषश्चिकित्वान्। स नो यक्षद्देवताता यजीयान्नि हि षत्सदन्तरः पूर्वो अस्मत्॥

yamaicchāma manasā so'yamāgādyajñasya vidvānparuṣaścikitvān | sa no yakṣaddevatātā yajīyānni hi ṣatsadantaraḥ pūrvo asmat ||

HE hath arrived, he whom we sought with longing, who skilled in sacrifice well knows its courses. Let him discharge his sacrificial duties: let him sit down as Friend who was before Us.

अराधि होता निषदा यजीयानभि प्रयांसि सुधितानि हि ख्यत्। यजामहै यज्ञियान्हन्त देवाँ ईळामहा ईड्याँ आज्येन॥

arādhi hotā niṣadā yajīyānabhi prayāṁsi sudhitāni hi khyat | yajāmahai yajñiyānhanta devā īḻāmahā īḍyā ājyena ||

Best Priest, he hath been won by being seated, for he hath looked on the well-ordered viands. Come, let usworship Gods who must be worshipped, and pouring oil, laud those who should be lauded.

साध्वीमकर्देववीतिं नो अद्य यज्ञस्य जिह्वामविदाम गुह्याम्। स आयुरागात्सुरभिर्वसानो भद्रामकर्देवहूतिं नो अद्य॥

sādhvīmakardevavītiṁ no adya yajñasya jihvāmavidāma guhyām | sa āyurāgātsurabhirvasāno bhadrāmakardevahūtiṁ no adya ||

Now hath he made the feast of Gods effective: now have we found the secret tongue of worship. Now hath he come, sweet, robed in vital vigour, and made our calling on the Gods effective.

तदद्य वाचः प्रथमं मसीय येनासुराँ अभि देवा असाम। ऊर्जाद उत यज्ञियासः पञ्च जना मम होत्रं जुषध्वम्॥

tadadya vācaḥ prathamaṁ masīya yenāsurā abhi devā asāma | ūrjāda uta yajñiyāsaḥ pañca janā mama hotraṁ juṣadhvam ||

This prelude of my speech I now will utter, whereby we Gods may quell our Asura foemen. Eaters of strengthening food who merit worship, O ye Five Tribes, be pleased with mine oblation.

पञ्च जना मम होत्रं जुषन्तां गोजाता उत ये यज्ञियासः। पृथिवी नः पार्थिवात्पात्वंहसोऽन्तरिक्षं दिव्यात्पात्वस्मान्॥

pañca janā mama hotraṁ juṣantāṁ gojātā uta ye yajñiyāsaḥ | pṛthivī naḥ pārthivātpātvaṁhaso'ntarikṣaṁ divyātpātvasmān ||

May the Five Tribes be pleased with mine oblation, and the Cow's Sons and all who merit worship. From earthly trouble may the earth protect us, and air's mid realm from woe that comes from heaven.

तन्तुं तन्वन्रजसो भानुमन्विहि ज्योतिष्मतः पथो रक्ष धिया कृतान्। अनुल्बणं वयत जोगुवामपो मनुर्भव जनया दैव्यं जनम्॥

tantuṁ tanvanrajaso bhānumanvihi jyotiṣmataḥ patho rakṣa dhiyā kṛtān | anulbaṇaṁ vayata joguvāmapo manurbhava janayā daivyaṁ janam ||

Spinning the thread, follow the region's splendid light: guard thou the path ways well which wisdom hath prepared. Weave ye the knotless labour of the bards who sing: be Manu thou, and bring the Heavenly People forth.

अक्षानहो नह्यतनोत सोम्या इष्कृणुध्वं रशना ओत पिंशत। अष्टावन्धुरं वहताभितो रथं येन देवासो अनयन्नभि प्रियम्॥

akṣānaho nahyatanota somyā iṣkṛṇudhvaṁ raśanā ota piṁśata | aṣṭāvandhuraṁ vahatābhito rathaṁ yena devāso anayannabhi priyam ||

Lovers of Soma, bind the chariot traces fast: set ye the reins in order and embellish them. Bring hitherward the car with seats where eight may sit, whereon the Gods have brought the treasure that we love.

अश्मन्वती रीयते सं रभध्वमुत्तिष्ठत प्र तरता सखायः। अत्रा जहाम ये असन्नशेवाः शिवान्वयमुत्तरेमाभि वाजान्॥

aśmanvatī rīyate saṁ rabhadhvamuttiṣṭhata pra taratā sakhāyaḥ | atrā jahāma ye asannaśevāḥ śivānvayamuttaremābhi vājān ||

Here flows Asmanvati: hold fast each other, keep yourselves up, and pass, my friends, the river. There let us leave the Powers that brought no profit, and cross the flood to Powers that are auspicious.

त्वष्टा माया वेदपसामपस्तमो बिभ्रत्पात्रा देवपानानि शंतमा। शिशीते नूनं परशुं स्वायसं येन वृश्चादेतशो ब्रह्मणस्पतिः॥

tvaṣṭā māyā vedapasāmapastamo bibhratpātrā devapānāni śaṁtamā | śiśīte nūnaṁ paraśuṁ svāyasaṁ yena vṛścādetaśo brahmaṇaspatiḥ ||

Tvastar, most deft of workmen, knew each magic art, bringing most blessed bowls that hold the drink of Gods. His axe, wrought of good metal, he is sharpening now, wherewith the radiant Brahmanaspati will cut.

सतो नूनं कवयः सं शिशीत वाशीभिर्याभिरमृताय तक्षथ। विद्वांसः पदा गुह्यानि कर्तन येन देवासो अमृतत्वमानशुः॥

sato nūnaṁ kavayaḥ saṁ śiśīta vāśībhiryābhiramṛtāya takṣatha | vidvāṁsaḥ padā guhyāni kartana yena devāso amṛtatvamānaśuḥ ||

Now, O ye Sapient Ones, make ye the axes sharp wherewith ye fashion bowls to hold the Amrta. Knowing the secret places make ye ready that whereby the Gods have gotten immortality.

गर्भे योषामदधुर्वत्समासन्यपीच्येन मनसोत जिह्वया। स विश्वाहा सुमना योग्या अभि सिषासनिर्वनते कार इज्जितिम्॥

garbhe yoṣāmadadhurvatsamāsanyapīcyena manasota jihvayā | sa viśvāhā sumanā yogyā abhi siṣāsanirvanate kāra ijjitim ||

Ye with a secret tongue and dark intention laid the maiden deep within, the calf within the mouth. They evermore are near us with their gracious help: successful is the song that strives for victory.
