सूक्त ४५

दिवस्परि प्रथमं जज्ञे अग्निरस्मद्द्वितीयं परि जातवेदाः। तृतीयमप्सु नृमणा अजस्रमिन्धान एनं जरते स्वाधीः॥

divaspari prathamaṁ jajñe agnirasmaddvitīyaṁ pari jātavedāḥ | tṛtīyamapsu nṛmaṇā ajasramindhāna enaṁ jarate svādhīḥ ||

FIRST Agni sprang to life from out of Heaven: the second time from us came Jatavedas. Thirdly the Manly-souled was in the waters. The pious lauds and kindles him the Eternal.

विद्मा ते अग्ने त्रेधा त्रयाणि विद्मा ते धाम विभृता पुरुत्रा। विद्मा ते नाम परमं गुहा यद्विद्मा तमुत्सं यत आजगन्थ॥

vidmā te agne tredhā trayāṇi vidmā te dhāma vibhṛtā purutrā | vidmā te nāma paramaṁ guhā yadvidmā tamutsaṁ yata ājagantha ||

Agni, we know thy three powers in three stations, we know thy forms in many a place divided. We know what name supreme thou hast in secret: we know the source from which thou hast proceeded.

समुद्रे त्वा नृमणा अप्स्वन्तर्नृचक्षा ईधे दिवो अग्न ऊधन्। तृतीये त्वा रजसि तस्थिवांसमपामुपस्थे महिषा अवर्धन्॥

samudre tvā nṛmaṇā apsvantarnṛcakṣā īdhe divo agna ūdhan | tṛtīye tvā rajasi tasthivāṁsamapāmupasthe mahiṣā avardhan ||

The Manly-souled lit thee in sea and waters, man's Viewer lit thee in the breast of heaven, There as thou stoodest in the third high region the Steers increased thee in the water's bosom.

अक्रन्ददग्निः स्तनयन्निव द्यौः क्षामा रेरिहद्वीरुधः समञ्जन्। सद्यो जज्ञानो वि हीमिद्धो अख्यदा रोदसी भानुना भात्यन्तः॥

akrandadagniḥ stanayanniva dyauḥ kṣāmā rerihadvīrudhaḥ samañjan | sadyo jajñāno vi hīmiddho akhyadā rodasī bhānunā bhātyantaḥ ||

Agni roared out, like Dyaus what time he thunders: he licked the ground about the plants he flickered. At once, when born, he looked around enkindled, and lightened heaven and earth within with splendour.

श्रीणामुदारो धरुणो रयीणां मनीषाणां प्रार्पणः सोमगोपाः। वसुः सूनुः सहसो अप्सु राजा वि भात्यग्र उषसामिधानः॥

śrīṇāmudāro dharuṇo rayīṇāṁ manīṣāṇāṁ prārpaṇaḥ somagopāḥ | vasuḥ sūnuḥ sahaso apsu rājā vi bhātyagra uṣasāmidhānaḥ ||

The spring of glories and support of riches, rouser of thoughts and guardian of the Soma, Good Son of Strength, a King amid the waters, in forefront of the Dawns he shines enkindled.

विश्वस्य केतुर्भुवनस्य गर्भ आ रोदसी अपृणाज्जायमानः। वीळुं चिदद्रिमभिनत्परायञ्जना यदग्निमयजन्त पञ्च॥

viśvasya keturbhuvanasya garbha ā rodasī apṛṇājjāyamānaḥ | vīḻuṁ cidadrimabhinatparāyañjanā yadagnimayajanta pañca ||

Germ of the world, ensign of all creation, be sprang to life and filled the earth and heavens. Even the firm rock he cleft when passing over, when the Five Tribes brought sacrifice to Agni.

उशिक्पावको अरतिः सुमेधा मर्तेष्वग्निरमृतो नि धायि। इयर्ति धूममरुषं भरिभ्रदुच्छुक्रेण शोचिषा द्यामिनक्षन्॥

uśikpāvako aratiḥ sumedhā marteṣvagniramṛto ni dhāyi | iyarti dhūmamaruṣaṁ bharibhraducchukreṇa śociṣā dyāminakṣan ||

So among mortals was Immortal Agni stablished as holy wise and willing envoy. He waves the red smoke that he lifts above him, striving to reach the heavens with radiant lustre.

दृशानो रुक्म उर्विया व्यद्यौद्दुर्मर्षमायुः श्रिये रुचानः। अग्निरमृतो अभवद्वयोभिर्यदेनं द्यौर्जनयत्सुरेताः॥

dṛśāno rukma urviyā vyadyauddurmarṣamāyuḥ śriye rucānaḥ | agniramṛto abhavadvayobhiryadenaṁ dyaurjanayatsuretāḥ ||

Like gold to look on, far he shone refulgent, beaming imperishable life for glory, Agni by vital powers became immortal when his prolific Father Dyaus begat him.

यस्ते अद्य कृणवद्भद्रशोचेऽपूपं देव घृतवन्तमग्ने। प्र तं नय प्रतरं वस्यो अच्छाभि सुम्नं देवभक्तं यविष्ठ॥

yaste adya kṛṇavadbhadraśoce'pūpaṁ deva ghṛtavantamagne | pra taṁ naya prataraṁ vasyo acchābhi sumnaṁ devabhaktaṁ yaviṣṭha ||

Whoso this day, O God whose flames are lovely, prepares a cake, O Agni, mixt with butter, Lead thou and further him to higher fortune, to bliss bestowed by Gods, O thou Most Youthful.

आ तं भज सौश्रवसेष्वग्न उक्थौक्थ आ भज शस्यमाने। प्रियः सूर्ये प्रियो अग्ना भवात्युज्जातेन भिनददुज्जनित्वैः॥

ā taṁ bhaja sauśravaseṣvagna ukthauktha ā bhaja śasyamāne | priyaḥ sūrye priyo agnā bhavātyujjātena bhinadadujjanitvaiḥ ||

Endow him, Agni, with a share of glory, at every song of praise sung forth enrich him. Dear let him be to Surya, dear to Agni, preeminent with son and children's children.

त्वामग्ने यजमाना अनु द्यून्विश्वा वसु दधिरे वार्याणि। त्वया सह द्रविणमिच्छमाना व्रजं गोमन्तमुशिजो वि वव्रुः॥

tvāmagne yajamānā anu dyūnviśvā vasu dadhire vāryāṇi | tvayā saha draviṇamicchamānā vrajaṁ gomantamuśijo vi vavruḥ ||

While, Agni, day by day men pay thee worship they win themselves all treasures worth the wishing. Allied with thee, eager and craving riches, they have disclosed the stable filled with cattle.

अस्ताव्यग्निर्नरां सुशेवो वैश्वानर ऋषिभिः सोमगोपाः। अद्वेषे द्यावापृथिवी हुवेम देवा धत्त रयिमस्मे सुवीरम्॥

astāvyagnirnarāṁ suśevo vaiśvānara ṛṣibhiḥ somagopāḥ | adveṣe dyāvāpṛthivī huvema devā dhatta rayimasme suvīram ||

Agni, the Friend of men, the Soma's keeper, Vaisvanara, hath been lauded by the Rsis. We will invoke benignant Earth and Heaven: ye Deities, give us wealth with hero children.
