सूक्त ६४

वृषा सोम द्युमाँ असि वृषा देव वृषव्रतः। वृषा धर्माणि दधिषे॥

vṛṣā soma dyumā asi vṛṣā deva vṛṣavrataḥ | vṛṣā dharmāṇi dadhiṣe ||

Soma, thou art a splendid Steer, a Steer, O God, with steerlike sway: Thou as a Steer ordainest laws.

वृष्णस्ते वृष्ण्यं शवो वृषा वनं वृषा मदः। सत्यं वृषन्वृषेदसि॥

vṛṣṇaste vṛṣṇyaṁ śavo vṛṣā vanaṁ vṛṣā madaḥ | satyaṁ vṛṣanvṛṣedasi ||

Steer-strong thy might is as a steer's, steerstrong thywood, steer-like thy drink A Steer indeed, O Steer, art thou.

अश्वो न चक्रदो वृषा सं गा इन्दो समर्वतः। वि नो राये दुरो वृधि॥

aśvo na cakrado vṛṣā saṁ gā indo samarvataḥ | vi no rāye duro vṛdhi ||

Thou, Indu, as a vigorous horse, hast neighed together steeds and kine: Unbar for us the doors to wealth.

असृक्षत प्र वाजिनो गव्या सोमासो अश्वया। शुक्रासो वीरयाशवः॥

asṛkṣata pra vājino gavyā somāso aśvayā | śukrāso vīrayāśavaḥ ||

Out of desire of cows and steeds and horses. potent Soma-drops, Brilliant and swift, have been effused.

शुम्भमाना ऋतायुभिर्मृज्यमाना गभस्त्योः। पवन्ते वारे अव्यये॥

śumbhamānā ṛtāyubhirmṛjyamānā gabhastyoḥ | pavante vāre avyaye ||

They purified in both the hands, made beautiful by holy men, Flow onward to the fleecy cloth.

ते विश्वा दाशुषे वसु सोमा दिव्यानि पार्थिवा। पवन्तामान्तरिक्ष्या॥

te viśvā dāśuṣe vasu somā divyāni pārthivā | pavantāmāntarikṣyā ||

These Soma juices shall pour forth all treasures for the worshipper From heaven and earth and firmament.

पवमानस्य विश्ववित्प्र ते सर्गा असृक्षत। सूर्यस्येव न रश्मयः॥

pavamānasya viśvavitpra te sargā asṛkṣata | sūryasyeva na raśmayaḥ ||

The streams of Pavamana, thine, Finder of all, have been effused, Even as Surya's rays of light.

केतुं कृण्वन्दिवस्परि विश्वा रूपाभ्यर्षसि। समुद्रः सोम पिन्वसे॥

ketuṁ kṛṇvandivaspari viśvā rūpābhyarṣasi | samudraḥ soma pinvase ||

Making the light that shines from heaven thou flowest on to every form Soma, thou swellest like a sea.

हिन्वानो वाचमिष्यसि पवमान विधर्मणि। अक्रान्देवो न सूर्यः॥

hinvāno vācamiṣyasi pavamāna vidharmaṇi | akrāndevo na sūryaḥ ||

Urged on thou sendest out thy voice, O Pavamana; thou hast moved, Like the God Surya, to the sieve.

इन्दुः पविष्ट चेतनः प्रियः कवीनां मती। सृजदश्वं रथीरिव॥

induḥ paviṣṭa cetanaḥ priyaḥ kavīnāṁ matī | sṛjadaśvaṁ rathīriva ||

Indu, Enlightener, Friend, hath been purified by the sages' hymns: So starts the charioteer his steed-

ऊर्मिर्यस्ते पवित्र आ देवावीः पर्यक्षरत्। सीदन्नृतस्य योनिमा॥

ūrmiryaste pavitra ā devāvīḥ paryakṣarat | sīdannṛtasya yonimā ||

Thy God-delighting wave which hath flowed to purifying seive, Alighting in the home of Law.

स नो अर्ष पवित्र आ मदो यो देववीतमः। इन्दविन्द्राय पीतये॥

sa no arṣa pavitra ā mado yo devavītamaḥ | indavindrāya pītaye ||

Flow to our sieve, a gladdening draught that hath most intercourse with Gods, Indu, to Indra for his drink.

इषे पवस्व धारया मृज्यमानो मनीषिभिः। इन्दो रुचाभि गा इहि॥

iṣe pavasva dhārayā mṛjyamāno manīṣibhiḥ | indo rucābhi gā ihi ||

Flow onward with a stream for food, made beautiful by sapient men: Indu with sheen approach the milk.

पुनानो वरिवस्कृध्यूर्जं जनाय गिर्वणः। हरे सृजान आशिरम्॥

punāno varivaskṛdhyūrjaṁ janāya girvaṇaḥ | hare sṛjāna āśiram ||

While thou art cleansed, Song-Lover, bring comfort and vigour to the folk, Poured, Tawny One! on milk and curds.

पुनानो देववीतय इन्द्रस्य याहि निष्कृतम्। द्युतानो वाजिभिर्यतः॥

punāno devavītaya indrasya yāhi niṣkṛtam | dyutāno vājibhiryataḥ ||

Purified for the feast of Gods, go thou to Indra's special place, Resplendent, guided by the strong.

प्र हिन्वानास इन्दवोऽच्छा समुद्रमाशवः। धिया जूता असृक्षत॥

pra hinvānāsa indavo'cchā samudramāśavaḥ | dhiyā jūtā asṛkṣata ||

Accelerated by the hymn, the rapid drops of Soma juice Have flowed, urged onward, to the lake.

मर्मृजानास आयवो वृथा समुद्रमिन्दवः। अग्मन्नृतस्य योनिमा॥

marmṛjānāsa āyavo vṛthā samudramindavaḥ | agmannṛtasya yonimā ||

Easily have the living drops, made beautiful, approached the lake, Yea, to the place of sacrifice.

परि णो याह्यस्मयुर्विश्वा वसून्योजसा। पाहि नः शर्म वीरवत्॥

pari ṇo yāhyasmayurviśvā vasūnyojasā | pāhi naḥ śarma vīravat ||

Compass about, our faithful Friend, all our possessions with thy might: Guard, hero like, our sheltering home.

मिमाति वह्निरेतशः पदं युजान ऋक्वभिः। प्र यत्समुद्र आहितः॥

mimāti vahniretaśaḥ padaṁ yujāna ṛkvabhiḥ | pra yatsamudra āhitaḥ ||

Loud neighs the Courser Etasa, with singers, harnessed for the place, Guided for travel to the lake.

आ यद्योनिं हिरण्ययमाशुरृतस्य सीदति। जहात्यप्रचेतसः॥

ā yadyoniṁ hiraṇyayamāśurṛtasya sīdati | jahātyapracetasaḥ ||

What time the Swift One resteth in the golden place of sacrifice, He leaves the foolish far away.

अभि वेना अनूषतेयक्षन्ति प्रचेतसः। मज्जन्त्यविचेतसः॥

abhi venā anūṣateyakṣanti pracetasaḥ | majjantyavicetasaḥ ||

The friends have sung in unison, the prudent wish to sacrifice: Down sink the unintelligent.

इन्द्रायेन्दो मरुत्वते पवस्व मधुमत्तमः। ऋतस्य योनिमासदम्॥

indrāyendo marutvate pavasva madhumattamaḥ | ṛtasya yonimāsadam ||

For Indra girt by Maruts, flow, thou Indu, very rich in sweets, To sit in place of sacrifice.

तं त्वा विप्रा वचोविदः परि ष्कृण्वन्ति वेधसः। सं त्वा मृजन्त्यायवः॥

taṁ tvā viprā vacovidaḥ pari ṣkṛṇvanti vedhasaḥ | saṁ tvā mṛjantyāyavaḥ ||

Controlling priests and sages skilled in holy song adorn thee well: The living make thee beautiful.

रसं ते मित्रो अर्यमा पिबन्ति वरुणः कवे। पवमानस्य मरुतः॥

rasaṁ te mitro aryamā pibanti varuṇaḥ kave | pavamānasya marutaḥ ||

Aryaman, Mitra, Varuna drink Pavamana's juice, yea, thine: O Sage, the Maruts drink thereof.

त्वं सोम विपश्चितं पुनानो वाचमिष्यसि। इन्दो सहस्रभर्णसम्॥

tvaṁ soma vipaścitaṁ punāno vācamiṣyasi | indo sahasrabharṇasam ||

O Soma, Indu, thou while thou art purified urgest onward speech. Thousandfold, with the lore of hymns.

उतो सहस्रभर्णसं वाचं सोम मखस्युवम्। पुनान इन्दवा भर॥

uto sahasrabharṇasaṁ vācaṁ soma makhasyuvam | punāna indavā bhara ||

Yea, Soma, Indu, while thou art purified do thou bring to us Speech thousandfold that longs for war.

पुनान इन्दवेषां पुरुहूत जनानाम्। प्रियः समुद्रमा विश॥

punāna indaveṣāṁ puruhūta janānām | priyaḥ samudramā viśa ||

O Indu, Much-invoked, while thou art purifying, as the Friend. Of these men enter thou the lake.

दविद्युतत्या रुचा परिष्टोभन्त्या कृपा। सोमाः शुक्रा गवाशिरः॥

davidyutatyā rucā pariṣṭobhantyā kṛpā | somāḥ śukrā gavāśiraḥ ||

Bright are these Somas blent with milk, with light that flashes brilliantly. And form that utters loud acclaim.

हिन्वानो हेतृभिर्यत आ वाजं वाज्यक्रमीत्। सीदन्तो वनुषो यथा॥

hinvāno hetṛbhiryata ā vājaṁ vājyakramīt | sīdanto vanuṣo yathā ||

Led by his drivers, and sent forth, the Strong Steed hath come nigh for spoil, Like warriors when they stand arrayed.

ऋधक्सोम स्वस्तये संजग्मानो दिवः कविः। पवस्व सूर्यो दृशे॥

ṛdhaksoma svastaye saṁjagmāno divaḥ kaviḥ | pavasva sūryo dṛśe ||

Specially, Soma, coming as a Sage from heaven to prosper us, Flow like the Sun for us to see.
