सूक्त ९

आ नूनमश्विना युवं वत्सस्य गन्तमवसे। प्रास्मै यच्छतमवृकं पृथु च्छर्दिर्युयुतं या अरातयः॥

ā nūnamaśvinā yuvaṁ vatsasya gantamavase | prāsmai yacchatamavṛkaṁ pṛthu cchardiryuyutaṁ yā arātayaḥ ||

To help and favour Vatsa now, O Asvins, come ye hitherward. Bestow on him a dwelling spacious and secure, and keep malignities away.

यदन्तरिक्षे यद्दिवि यत्पञ्च मानुषाँ अनु। नृम्णं तद्धत्तमश्विना॥

yadantarikṣe yaddivi yatpañca mānuṣā anu | nṛmṇaṁ taddhattamaśvinā ||

All manliness that is in heaven, with the Five Tribes, or in mid-air, Bestow, ye Asvins, upon us.

ये वां दंसांस्यश्विना विप्रासः परिमामृशुः। एवेत्काण्वस्य बोधतम्॥

ye vāṁ daṁsāṁsyaśvinā viprāsaḥ parimāmṛśuḥ | evetkāṇvasya bodhatam ||

Remember Kanva first of all among the singers, Asvins, who Have thought upon your wondrous deeds.

अयं वां घर्मो अश्विना स्तोमेन परि षिच्यते। अयं सोमो मधुमान्वाजिनीवसू येन वृत्रं चिकेतथः॥

ayaṁ vāṁ gharmo aśvinā stomena pari ṣicyate | ayaṁ somo madhumānvājinīvasū yena vṛtraṁ ciketathaḥ ||

Asvins, for you with song of praise this hot oblation is effused, This your sweet Soma juice, ye Lords of ample wealth, through which ye think upon the foe.

यदप्सु यद्वनस्पतौ यदोषधीषु पुरुदंससा कृतम्। तेन माविष्टमश्विना॥

yadapsu yadvanaspatau yadoṣadhīṣu purudaṁsasā kṛtam | tena māviṣṭamaśvinā ||

Whatever ye have done in floods, in the tree, Wonder-Workers, and in growing plants, Therewith, O Asvins, succour me.

यन्नासत्या भुरण्यथो यद्वा देव भिषज्यथः। अयं वां वत्सो मतिभिर्न विन्धते हविष्मन्तं हि गच्छथः॥

yannāsatyā bhuraṇyatho yadvā deva bhiṣajyathaḥ | ayaṁ vāṁ vatso matibhirna vindhate haviṣmantaṁ hi gacchathaḥ ||

What force, Nasatyas, ye exert, whatever, Gods, ye tend and heal, This your own Vatsa gains not by his hymns alone: ye visit him who offers gifts.

आ नूनमश्विनोरृषिः स्तोमं चिकेत वामया। आ सोमं मधुमत्तमं घर्मं सिञ्चादथर्वणि॥

ā nūnamaśvinorṛṣiḥ stomaṁ ciketa vāmayā | ā somaṁ madhumattamaṁ gharmaṁ siñcādatharvaṇi ||

Now hath the Rsi splendidly thought out the Asvins' hymn of praise. Let the Atharvan pour the warm oblation forth, and Soma very rich in sweets.

आ नूनं रघुवर्तनिं रथं तिष्ठाथो अश्विना। आ वां स्तोमा इमे मम नभो न चुच्यवीरत॥

ā nūnaṁ raghuvartaniṁ rathaṁ tiṣṭhātho aśvinā | ā vāṁ stomā ime mama nabho na cucyavīrata ||

Ye Asvins, now ascend your car that lightly rolls upon its way. May these my praises make you speed hitherward like a cloud of heaven.

यदद्य वां नासत्योक्थैराचुच्युवीमहि। यद्वा वाणीभिरश्विनेवेत्काण्वस्य बोधतम्॥

yadadya vāṁ nāsatyokthairācucyuvīmahi | yadvā vāṇībhiraśvinevetkāṇvasya bodhatam ||

When, O Nasatyas, we this day make you speed hither with our hymns, Or, Asvins, with our songs of praise, remember Kanya specially.

यद्वां कक्षीवाँ उत यद्व्यश्व ऋषिर्यद्वां दीर्घतमा जुहाव। पृथी यद्वां वैन्यः सादनेष्वेवेदतो अश्विना चेतयेथाम्॥

yadvāṁ kakṣīvā uta yadvyaśva ṛṣiryadvāṁ dīrghatamā juhāva | pṛthī yadvāṁ vainyaḥ sādaneṣvevedato aśvinā cetayethām ||

As erst Kaksivan and the Rsi Vyasva, as erst Dirghatamas invoked your presence, Or, in the sacrificial chambers, Vainya Prthi, so be ye mindful of us here, O Asvins.

यातं छर्दिष्पा उत नः परस्पा भूतं जगत्पा उत नस्तनूपा। वर्तिस्तोकाय तनयाय यातम्॥

yātaṁ chardiṣpā uta naḥ paraspā bhūtaṁ jagatpā uta nastanūpā | vartistokāya tanayāya yātam ||

Come as home-guardians, saving us from foemen, guarding our living creatures and our bodies, Come to the house to give us seed and offspring,

यदिन्द्रेण सरथं याथो अश्विना यद्वा वायुना भवथः समोकसा। यदादित्येभिरृभुभिः सजोषसा यद्वा विष्णोर्विक्रमणेषु तिष्ठथः॥

yadindreṇa sarathaṁ yātho aśvinā yadvā vāyunā bhavathaḥ samokasā | yadādityebhirṛbhubhiḥ sajoṣasā yadvā viṣṇorvikramaṇeṣu tiṣṭhathaḥ ||

Whether with Indra ye be faring, Asvins, or resting in one dwelling-place with Vayu, In concord with the Rbhus or Adityas, or standing still in Visnu's striding-places.

यदद्याश्विनावहं हुवेय वाजसातये। यत्पृत्सु तुर्वणे सहस्तच्छ्रेष्ठमश्विनोरवः॥

yadadyāśvināvahaṁ huveya vājasātaye | yatpṛtsu turvaṇe sahastacchreṣṭhamaśvinoravaḥ ||

When I, O Asvins, call on you to-day that I may gather strength, Or as all-conquering might in war, be that the Asvins' noblest grace.

आ नूनं यातमश्विनेमा हव्यानि वां हिता। इमे सोमासो अधि तुर्वशे यदाविमे कण्वेषु वामथ॥

ā nūnaṁ yātamaśvinemā havyāni vāṁ hitā | ime somāso adhi turvaśe yadāvime kaṇveṣu vāmatha ||

Now come, ye Asvins, hitherward: here are oblations set for you; These Soma-draughts to aid Yadu and Turvasa, these offered you mid Kaniva's Sons.

यन्नासत्या पराके अर्वाके अस्ति भेषजम्। तेन नूनं विमदाय प्रचेतसा छर्दिर्वत्साय यच्छतम्॥

yannāsatyā parāke arvāke asti bheṣajam | tena nūnaṁ vimadāya pracetasā chardirvatsāya yacchatam ||

Whatever healing balm is yours, Nisatyas, near or far away, Therewith, great Sages, grant a home to Vatsa and to Vimada.

अभुत्स्यु प्र देव्या साकं वाचाहमश्विनोः। व्यावर्देव्या मतिं वि रातिं मर्त्येभ्यः॥

abhutsyu pra devyā sākaṁ vācāhamaśvinoḥ | vyāvardevyā matiṁ vi rātiṁ martyebhyaḥ ||

Together with the Goddess, with the Asvins' Speech have I awoke. Thou, Goddess, hast disclosed the hymn, and holy gift from mortal men.

प्र बोधयोषो अश्विना प्र देवि सूनृते महि। प्र यज्ञहोतरानुषक्प्र मदाय श्रवो बृहत्॥

pra bodhayoṣo aśvinā pra devi sūnṛte mahi | pra yajñahotarānuṣakpra madāya śravo bṛhat ||

Awake the Asvins, Goddess Dawn! Up Mighty Lady of sweet strains! Rise, straightway, priest of sacrifice! High glory to the gladdening draught!

यदुषो यासि भानुना सं सूर्येण रोचसे। आ हायमश्विनो रथो वर्तिर्याति नृपाय्यम्॥

yaduṣo yāsi bhānunā saṁ sūryeṇa rocase | ā hāyamaśvino ratho vartiryāti nṛpāyyam ||

Thou, Dawn, approaching with thy light shinest together with the Sun, And to this man-protecting home the chariot ofthe Asvins comes.

यदापीतासो अंशवो गावो न दुह्र ऊधभिः। यद्वा वाणीरनूषत प्र देवयन्तो अश्विना॥

yadāpītāso aṁśavo gāvo na duhra ūdhabhiḥ | yadvā vāṇīranūṣata pra devayanto aśvinā ||

When yellow stalks give forth the juice, as cows from udders pour their milk, And voices sound the song of praise, the Asvins' worshippers show first.

प्र द्युम्नाय प्र शवसे प्र नृषाह्याय शर्मणे। प्र दक्षाय प्रचेतसा॥

pra dyumnāya pra śavase pra nṛṣāhyāya śarmaṇe | pra dakṣāya pracetasā ||

Forward for glory and for strength, protection that shall conquer men, And power and skill, most sapient Ones!

यन्नूनं धीभिरश्विना पितुर्योना निषीदथः। यद्वा सुम्नेभिरुक्थ्या॥

yannūnaṁ dhībhiraśvinā pituryonā niṣīdathaḥ | yadvā sumnebhirukthyā ||

When Asvins, worthy of our lauds, ye seat you in the father's house. With wisdom or the bliss ye bring.
