सूक्त ७

प्र यद्वस्त्रिष्टुभमिषं मरुतो विप्रो अक्षरत्। वि पर्वतेषु राजथ॥

pra yadvastriṣṭubhamiṣaṁ maruto vipro akṣarat | vi parvateṣu rājatha ||

O MARUTS, when the sage hath poured the Trstup forth as food for you, Ye shine amid the mountain-clouds.

यदङ्ग तविषीयवो यामं शुभ्रा अचिध्वम्। नि पर्वता अहासत॥

yadaṅga taviṣīyavo yāmaṁ śubhrā acidhvam | ni parvatā ahāsata ||

When, Bright Ones, fain to show your might ye have determined on your course, The mountain-clouds have bent them down.

उदीरयन्त वायुभिर्वाश्रासः पृश्निमातरः। धुक्षन्त पिप्युषीमिषम्॥

udīrayanta vāyubhirvāśrāsaḥ pṛśnimātaraḥ | dhukṣanta pipyuṣīmiṣam ||

Loud roaring with the winds the Sons of Prsni have upraised themselves: They have poured out the streaming food.

वपन्ति मरुतो मिहं प्र वेपयन्ति पर्वतान्। यद्यामं यान्ति वायुभिः॥

vapanti maruto mihaṁ pra vepayanti parvatān | yadyāmaṁ yānti vāyubhiḥ ||

The Maruts spread the mist abroad and make mountains rock and reel, When with the winds they go their way

नि यद्यामाय वो गिरिर्नि सिन्धवो विधर्मणे। महे शुष्माय येमिरे॥

ni yadyāmāya vo girirni sindhavo vidharmaṇe | mahe śuṣmāya yemire ||

What time the rivers and the hills before your coming bowed them down, So to sustain your mighty force.

युष्माँ उ नक्तमूतये युष्मान्दिवा हवामहे। युष्मान्प्रयत्यध्वरे॥

yuṣmā u naktamūtaye yuṣmāndivā havāmahe | yuṣmānprayatyadhvare ||

We call on you for aid by night, on you for succour in the day, On you while sacrifice proceeds.

उदु त्ये अरुणप्सवश्चित्रा यामेभिरीरते। वाश्रा अधि ष्णुना दिवः॥

udu tye aruṇapsavaścitrā yāmebhirīrate | vāśrā adhi ṣṇunā divaḥ ||

These, verily, wondrous, red of hue, speed on their courses with a roar Over the ridges of the sky.

सृजन्ति रश्मिमोजसा पन्थां सूर्याय यातवे। ते भानुभिर्वि तस्थिरे॥

sṛjanti raśmimojasā panthāṁ sūryāya yātave | te bhānubhirvi tasthire ||

With might they drop the loosened rein so that the Sun may run his course, And spread themselves with beams of light.

इमां मे मरुतो गिरमिमं स्तोममृभुक्षणः। इमं मे वनता हवम्॥

imāṁ me maruto giramimaṁ stomamṛbhukṣaṇaḥ | imaṁ me vanatā havam ||

Accept, ye Maruts, this my song, accept ye this mine hymn of praise, Accept, Rbhuksans, this my call.

त्रीणि सरांसि पृश्नयो दुदुह्रे वज्रिणे मधु। उत्सं कवन्धमुद्रिणम्॥

trīṇi sarāṁsi pṛśnayo duduhre vajriṇe madhu | utsaṁ kavandhamudriṇam ||

The dappled Cows have poured three lakes, meath for the Thunder-wielding God, From the great cask, the watery cloud.

मरुतो यद्ध वो दिवः सुम्नायन्तो हवामहे। आ तू न उप गन्तन॥

maruto yaddha vo divaḥ sumnāyanto havāmahe | ā tū na upa gantana ||

O Maruts, quickly come to us when, longing for felicity, We call you hither from the sky.

यूयं हि ष्ठा सुदानवो रुद्रा ऋभुक्षणो दमे। उत प्रचेतसो मदे॥

yūyaṁ hi ṣṭhā sudānavo rudrā ṛbhukṣaṇo dame | uta pracetaso made ||

For, Rudras and Rbhuksans, ye, Most Bountiful, are in the house, Wise when the gladdening draught is drunk.

आ नो रयिं मदच्युतं पुरुक्षुं विश्वधायसम्। इयर्ता मरुतो दिवः॥

ā no rayiṁ madacyutaṁ purukṣuṁ viśvadhāyasam | iyartā maruto divaḥ ||

O Maruts, send us down from heaven riches distilling rapturous joy, With plenteous food, sustaining all.

अधीव यद्गिरीणां यामं शुभ्रा अचिध्वम्। सुवानैर्मन्दध्व इन्दुभिः॥

adhīva yadgirīṇāṁ yāmaṁ śubhrā acidhvam | suvānairmandadhva indubhiḥ ||

When, Bright Ones, hither from the hills ye have resolved to take your way, Ye revel in the drops effused.

एतावतश्चिदेषां सुम्नं भिक्षेत मर्त्यः। अदाभ्यस्य मन्मभिः॥

etāvataścideṣāṁ sumnaṁ bhikṣeta martyaḥ | adābhyasya manmabhiḥ ||

Man should solicit with his lauds happiness which belongs to them, So great a band invincible.

ये द्रप्सा इव रोदसी धमन्त्यनु वृष्टिभिः। उत्सं दुहन्तो अक्षितम्॥

ye drapsā iva rodasī dhamantyanu vṛṣṭibhiḥ | utsaṁ duhanto akṣitam ||

They who like fiery sparks with showers of rain blow through the heaven and earth, Milking the spring that never fails.

उदु स्वानेभिरीरत उद्रथैरुदु वायुभिः। उत्स्तोमैः पृश्निमातरः॥

udu svānebhirīrata udrathairudu vāyubhiḥ | utstomaiḥ pṛśnimātaraḥ ||

With chariots and tumultuous roar, with tempests and with hymns of praise The Sons of Prsni hurry forth.

येनाव तुर्वशं यदुं येन कण्वं धनस्पृतम्। राये सु तस्य धीमहि॥

yenāva turvaśaṁ yaduṁ yena kaṇvaṁ dhanaspṛtam | rāye su tasya dhīmahi ||

For wealth, we think of that whereby ye aided Yadu, Turvasa, And KanVa who obtained the spoil.

इमा उ वः सुदानवो घृतं न पिप्युषीरिषः। वर्धान्काण्वस्य मन्मभिः॥

imā u vaḥ sudānavo ghṛtaṁ na pipyuṣīriṣaḥ | vardhānkāṇvasya manmabhiḥ ||

May these our viands Bounteous Ones I that flow in streams like holy oil, With Kanva's hymns, increase your might.

क्व नूनं सुदानवो मदथा वृक्तबर्हिषः। ब्रह्मा को वः सपर्यति॥

kva nūnaṁ sudānavo madathā vṛktabarhiṣaḥ | brahmā ko vaḥ saparyati ||

Where, Bounteous Lords for whom the grass is trimmed, are ye rejoicing now? What Brahman is adoring you?

नहि ष्म यद्ध वः पुरा स्तोमेभिर्वृक्तबर्हिषः। शर्धाँ ऋतस्य जिन्वथ॥

nahi ṣma yaddha vaḥ purā stomebhirvṛktabarhiṣaḥ | śardhā ṛtasya jinvatha ||

Is it not there where ye of old, supplied with sacred grass, for lauds Inspired the strong in sacrifice?

समु त्ये महतीरपः सं क्षोणी समु सूर्यम्। सं वज्रं पर्वशो दधुः॥

samu tye mahatīrapaḥ saṁ kṣoṇī samu sūryam | saṁ vajraṁ parvaśo dadhuḥ ||

They brought together both the worlds, the mighty waters, and the Sun, And, joint by joint, the thunderbolt.

वि वृत्रं पर्वशो ययुर्वि पर्वताँ अराजिनः। चक्राणा वृष्णि पौंस्यम्॥

vi vṛtraṁ parvaśo yayurvi parvatā arājinaḥ | cakrāṇā vṛṣṇi pauṁsyam ||

They sundered Vrtra limb from limb and split the gloomy mountain-clouds, Performing a heroic deed.

अनु त्रितस्य युध्यतः शुष्ममावन्नुत क्रतुम्। अन्विन्द्रं वृत्रतूर्ये॥

anu tritasya yudhyataḥ śuṣmamāvannuta kratum | anvindraṁ vṛtratūrye ||

They reinforced the power and strength of Trita as he fought, and helped Indra in battle with the foe.

विद्युद्धस्ता अभिद्यवः शिप्राः शीर्षन्हिरण्ययीः। शुभ्रा व्यञ्जत श्रिये॥

vidyuddhastā abhidyavaḥ śiprāḥ śīrṣanhiraṇyayīḥ | śubhrā vyañjata śriye ||

They deck themselves for glory, bright, celestial, lightning in their hands, And helms of gold upon their heads.

उशना यत्परावत उक्ष्णो रन्ध्रमयातन। द्यौर्न चक्रदद्भिया॥

uśanā yatparāvata ukṣṇo randhramayātana | dyaurna cakradadbhiyā ||

When eagerly ye from far away came to the cavern of the Bull, He bellowed in his fear like Heaven.

आ नो मखस्य दावनेऽश्वैर्हिरण्यपाणिभिः। देवास उप गन्तन॥

ā no makhasya dāvane'śvairhiraṇyapāṇibhiḥ | devāsa upa gantana ||

Borne by your golden-footed steeds, O Gods, come hither to receive The sacrifice we offer you.

यदेषां पृषती रथे प्रष्टिर्वहति रोहितः। यान्ति शुभ्रा रिणन्नपः॥

yadeṣāṁ pṛṣatī rathe praṣṭirvahati rohitaḥ | yānti śubhrā riṇannapaḥ ||

When the red leader draws along their spotted deer yoked to the car. The Bright Ones come, and shed the rain.

सुषोमे शर्यणावत्यार्जीके पस्त्यावति। ययुर्निचक्रया नरः॥

suṣome śaryaṇāvatyārjīke pastyāvati | yayurnicakrayā naraḥ ||

Susoma, Saryakiavan, and Arjika full of homes, have they. These Heroes, sought with downward car.

कदा गच्छाथ मरुत इत्था विप्रं हवमानम्। मार्डीकेभिर्नाधमानम्॥

kadā gacchātha maruta itthā vipraṁ havamānam | mārḍīkebhirnādhamānam ||

When, Maruts, ye come to him, the singer who invokes you thus, With favours to your suppliant?

कद्ध नूनं कधप्रियो यदिन्द्रमजहातन। को वः सखित्व ओहते॥

kaddha nūnaṁ kadhapriyo yadindramajahātana | ko vaḥ sakhitva ohate ||

What now? where have ye still a friend since ye left Indra all alone? Who counteth on your friendship now?

सहो षु णो वज्रहस्तैः कण्वासो अग्निं मरुद्भिः। स्तुषे हिरण्यवाशीभिः॥

saho ṣu ṇo vajrahastaiḥ kaṇvāso agniṁ marudbhiḥ | stuṣe hiraṇyavāśībhiḥ ||

The Kanvas sing forth Agni's praise together with our Maruts' who Wield thunder and wear swords of gold.

ओ षु वृष्णः प्रयज्यूना नव्यसे सुविताय। ववृत्यां चित्रवाजान्॥

o ṣu vṛṣṇaḥ prayajyūnā navyase suvitāya | vavṛtyāṁ citravājān ||

Hither for new felicity may I attract the Impetuous Ones, The Heroes with their wondrous strength

गिरयश्चिन्नि जिहते पर्शानासो मन्यमानाः। पर्वताश्चिन्नि येमिरे॥

girayaścinni jihate parśānāso manyamānāḥ | parvatāścinni yemire ||

Before them sink the very hills deerning themseives abysses: yea, Even the mountains bend them down.

आक्ष्णयावानो वहन्त्यन्तरिक्षेण पततः। धातारः स्तुवते वयः॥

ākṣṇayāvāno vahantyantarikṣeṇa patataḥ | dhātāraḥ stuvate vayaḥ ||

Steeds flying on their tortuous path through mid-air carry them, and give The man who lauds them strength and life.

अग्निर्हि जानि पूर्व्यश्छन्दो न सूरो अर्चिषा। ते भानुभिर्वि तस्थिरे॥

agnirhi jāni pūrvyaśchando na sūro arciṣā | te bhānubhirvi tasthire ||

Agni was born the first of all, like Surya lovely with his light: With lustre these have spread abroad.
