सूक्त ५

दूरादिहेव यत्सत्यरुणप्सुरशिश्वितत्। वि भानुं विश्वधातनत्॥

dūrādiheva yatsatyaruṇapsuraśiśvitat | vi bhānuṁ viśvadhātanat ||

WHEN, even as she were present here, red Dawn hath shone from far away, She spreadeth light on every side.

नृवद्दस्रा मनोयुजा रथेन पृथुपाजसा। सचेथे अश्विनोषसम्॥

nṛvaddasrā manoyujā rathena pṛthupājasā | sacethe aśvinoṣasam ||

Like Heroes on your will-yoked car farshining, Wonder-Workers! ye Attend, O Asvins, on the Dawn.

युवाभ्यां वाजिनीवसू प्रति स्तोमा अदृक्षत। वाचं दूतो यथोहिषे॥

yuvābhyāṁ vājinīvasū prati stomā adṛkṣata | vācaṁ dūto yathohiṣe ||

By you, O Lords of ample wealth our songs of praise have been observed: As envoy have I brought the prayer.

पुरुप्रिया ण ऊतये पुरुमन्द्रा पुरूवसू। स्तुषे कण्वासो अश्विना॥

purupriyā ṇa ūtaye purumandrā purūvasū | stuṣe kaṇvāso aśvinā ||

Kanvas must praise the Asvins dear to many, making many glad, Most rich, that they may succour us.

मंहिष्ठा वाजसातमेषयन्ता शुभस्पती। गन्तारा दाशुषो गृहम्॥

maṁhiṣṭhā vājasātameṣayantā śubhaspatī | gantārā dāśuṣo gṛham ||

Most liberal, best at winning strength, inciters, Lords of splendour who Visit the worshipper's abode.

ता सुदेवाय दाशुषे सुमेधामवितारिणीम्। घृतैर्गव्यूतिमुक्षतम्॥

tā sudevāya dāśuṣe sumedhāmavitāriṇīm | ghṛtairgavyūtimukṣatam ||

So for devout Sudeva dew with fatness his unfailing mead, And make it rich for sacrifice.

आ नः स्तोममुप द्रवत्तूयं श्येनेभिराशुभिः। यातमश्वेभिरश्विना॥

ā naḥ stomamupa dravattūyaṁ śyenebhirāśubhiḥ | yātamaśvebhiraśvinā ||

Hitherward running speedily with horses, as with rapid hawks, Come, Asvins, to our song of praise

येभिस्तिस्रः परावतो दिवो विश्वानि रोचना। त्रीँरक्तून्परिदीयथः॥

yebhistisraḥ parāvato divo viśvāni rocanā | trīraktūnparidīyathaḥ ||

Wherewith the three wide distances, and all the lights that are in heaven. Ye traverse, and three times of night.

उत नो गोमतीरिष उत सातीरहर्विदा। वि पथः सातये सितम्॥

uta no gomatīriṣa uta sātīraharvidā | vi pathaḥ sātaye sitam ||

O Finders of the Day, that we may win us food of kine and wealth, Open the paths for us to tread.

आ नो गोमन्तमश्विना सुवीरं सुरथं रयिम्। वोळ्हमश्वावतीरिषः॥

ā no gomantamaśvinā suvīraṁ surathaṁ rayim | voḻhamaśvāvatīriṣaḥ ||

O Asvins, bring us wealth in kine, in noble heroes, and in cars: Bring us the strength that horses give.

वावृधाना शुभस्पती दस्रा हिरण्यवर्तनी। पिबतं सोम्यं मधु॥

vāvṛdhānā śubhaspatī dasrā hiraṇyavartanī | pibataṁ somyaṁ madhu ||

Ye Lords of splendour, glorified, ye Wonder-Workers borne on paths Of gold, drink sweets with Somajuice.

अस्मभ्यं वाजिनीवसू मघवद्भ्यश्च सप्रथः। छर्दिर्यन्तमदाभ्यम्॥

asmabhyaṁ vājinīvasū maghavadbhyaśca saprathaḥ | chardiryantamadābhyam ||

To us, ye Lords of ample wealth, and to our wealth chiefs extend Wide shelter, ne'er to be assailed.

नि षु ब्रह्म जनानां याविष्टं तूयमा गतम्। मो ष्वन्याँ उपारतम्॥

ni ṣu brahma janānāṁ yāviṣṭaṁ tūyamā gatam | mo ṣvanyā upāratam ||

Come quickly downward to the prayer of people whom ye favour most: Approach not unto other folk.

अस्य पिबतमश्विना युवं मदस्य चारुणः। मध्वो रातस्य धिष्ण्या॥

asya pibatamaśvinā yuvaṁ madasya cāruṇaḥ | madhvo rātasya dhiṣṇyā ||

Ye Asvins whom our minds perceive, drink of this lovely gladdening draught, The mcath which we present to you.

अस्मे आ वहतं रयिं शतवन्तं सहस्रिणम्। पुरुक्षुं विश्वधायसम्॥

asme ā vahataṁ rayiṁ śatavantaṁ sahasriṇam | purukṣuṁ viśvadhāyasam ||

Bring riches hither unto us in hundreds and in thousands, source Of plenteous food, sustaining all.

पुरुत्रा चिद्धि वां नरा विह्वयन्ते मनीषिणः। वाघद्भिरश्विना गतम्॥

purutrā ciddhi vāṁ narā vihvayante manīṣiṇaḥ | vāghadbhiraśvinā gatam ||

Verily sages call on you, ye Heroes, in full many a place. Moved by the priests, O Asvins, conic.

जनासो वृक्तबर्हिषो हविष्मन्तो अरंकृतः। युवां हवन्ते अश्विना॥

janāso vṛktabarhiṣo haviṣmanto araṁkṛtaḥ | yuvāṁ havante aśvinā ||

Men who have trimmed the sacred grass, bringing oblations and prepared, O Asvins, are invoking you.

अस्माकमद्य वामयं स्तोमो वाहिष्ठो अन्तमः। युवाभ्यां भूत्वश्विना॥

asmākamadya vāmayaṁ stomo vāhiṣṭho antamaḥ | yuvābhyāṁ bhūtvaśvinā ||

May this our hymn of praise to-day, most powerful to bring you, be, O Asvins, nearest to your hearts.

यो ह वां मधुनो दृतिराहितो रथचर्षणे। ततः पिबतमश्विना॥

yo ha vāṁ madhuno dṛtirāhito rathacarṣaṇe | tataḥ pibatamaśvinā ||

The skin filled full of savoury meath, laid in the pathway of your car- O Asvins, drink ye both therefrom.

तेन नो वाजिनीवसू पश्वे तोकाय शं गवे। वहतं पीवरीरिषः॥

tena no vājinīvasū paśve tokāya śaṁ gave | vahataṁ pīvarīriṣaḥ ||

For this, ye Lords of ample wealth, bring blessing for our herd, our kine, Our progeny, and plenteous food.

उत नो दिव्या इष उत सिन्धूँरहर्विदा। अप द्वारेव वर्षथः॥

uta no divyā iṣa uta sindhūraharvidā | apa dvāreva varṣathaḥ ||

Ye too unclose to us like doors the strengthening waters of the sky, And rivers, ye who find the day.

कदा वां तौग्र्यो विधत्समुद्रे जहितो नरा। यद्वां रथो विभिष्पतात्॥

kadā vāṁ taugryo vidhatsamudre jahito narā | yadvāṁ ratho vibhiṣpatāt ||

When did the son of' Tugra serve you, Men? Abandoned in the sea, That with winged steeds your car might fly.

युवं कण्वाय नासत्या ऋपिरिप्ताय हर्म्ये। शश्वदूतीर्दशस्यथः॥

yuvaṁ kaṇvāya nāsatyā ṛpiriptāya harmye | śaśvadūtīrdaśasyathaḥ ||

Ye, O Nasatyas, ministered to Kanva with repeated aid, When cast into the heated pit.

ताभिरा यातमूतिभिर्नव्यसीभिः सुशस्तिभिः। यद्वां वृषण्वसू हुवे॥

tābhirā yātamūtibhirnavyasībhiḥ suśastibhiḥ | yadvāṁ vṛṣaṇvasū huve ||

Come near with those most recent aids of yours which merit eulogy, When I invoke you, Wealthy Gods.

यथा चित्कण्वमावतं प्रियमेधमुपस्तुतम्। अत्रिं शिञ्जारमश्विना॥

yathā citkaṇvamāvataṁ priyamedhamupastutam | atriṁ śiñjāramaśvinā ||

As ye protected Kanva erst, Priyamedha and Upastuta, Atri, Sinjara, Asvins Twain

यथोत कृत्व्ये धनेंऽशुं गोष्वगस्त्यम्। यथा वाजेषु सोभरिम्॥

yathota kṛtvye dhaneṁ'śuṁ goṣvagastyam | yathā vājeṣu sobharim ||

And Amsu in decisive fight, Agastya in the fray for kine. And, in his battles, Sobhari.

एतावद्वां वृषण्वसू अतो वा भूयो अश्विना। गृणन्तः सुम्नमीमहे॥

etāvadvāṁ vṛṣaṇvasū ato vā bhūyo aśvinā | gṛṇantaḥ sumnamīmahe ||

For so much bliss, or even more, O Asvins, Wealthy Gods, than this, We pray white singing hymns to you.

रथं हिरण्यवन्धुरं हिरण्याभीशुमश्विना। आ हि स्थाथो दिविस्पृशम्॥

rathaṁ hiraṇyavandhuraṁ hiraṇyābhīśumaśvinā | ā hi sthātho divispṛśam ||

Ascend your car with golden seat, O Asvins, and with reins of gold, That reaches even to the sky.

हिरण्ययी वां रभिरीषा अक्षो हिरण्ययः। उभा चक्रा हिरण्यया॥

hiraṇyayī vāṁ rabhirīṣā akṣo hiraṇyayaḥ | ubhā cakrā hiraṇyayā ||

Golden is its supporting shaft, the axle also is of gold, And both the wheels are made of gold.

तेन नो वाजिनीवसू परावतश्चिदा गतम्। उपेमां सुष्टुतिं मम॥

tena no vājinīvasū parāvataścidā gatam | upemāṁ suṣṭutiṁ mama ||

Thereon, ye Lords of ample wealth, come to us even from afar, Come ye to this mine eulogy.

आ वहेथे पराकात्पूर्वीरश्नन्तावश्विना। इषो दासीरमर्त्या॥

ā vahethe parākātpūrvīraśnantāvaśvinā | iṣo dāsīramartyā ||

From far away ye come to us, Asvins, enjoying plenteous food Of Dasas, O Immortal Ones.

आ नो द्युम्नैरा श्रवोभिरा राया यातमश्विना। पुरुश्चन्द्रा नासत्या॥

ā no dyumnairā śravobhirā rāyā yātamaśvinā | puruścandrā nāsatyā ||

With splendour, riches, and renown, O Asvins, hither come to us, Nasatyas, shining brilliantly.

एह वां प्रुषितप्सवो वयो वहन्तु पर्णिनः। अच्छा स्वध्वरं जनम्॥

eha vāṁ pruṣitapsavo vayo vahantu parṇinaḥ | acchā svadhvaraṁ janam ||

May dappled horses, steeds who fly with pinions, bring you hitherward To people skilled in sacrifice.

रथं वामनुगायसं य इषा वर्तते सह। न चक्रमभि बाधते॥

rathaṁ vāmanugāyasaṁ ya iṣā vartate saha | na cakramabhi bādhate ||

The whcel delayeth not that car of yours accompanied by song, That cometh with a store of food.

हिरण्ययेन रथेन द्रवत्पाणिभिरश्वैः। धीजवना नासत्या॥

hiraṇyayena rathena dravatpāṇibhiraśvaiḥ | dhījavanā nāsatyā ||

Borne on that chariot wrought of gold, with coursers very fleet of foot, Come, O Nasatyas, swift as thought.

युवं मृगं जागृवांसं स्वदथो वा वृषण्वसू। ता नः पृङ्क्तमिषा रयिम्॥

yuvaṁ mṛgaṁ jāgṛvāṁsaṁ svadatho vā vṛṣaṇvasū | tā naḥ pṛṅktamiṣā rayim ||

O Wealthy Gods, ye taste and find the brisk and watchful wild beast good. Associate wealth with food for us.

ता मे अश्विना सनीनां विद्यातं नवानाम्। यथा चिच्चैद्यः कशुः शतमुष्ट्रानां ददत्सहस्रा दश गोनाम्॥

tā me aśvinā sanīnāṁ vidyātaṁ navānām | yathā ciccaidyaḥ kaśuḥ śatamuṣṭrānāṁ dadatsahasrā daśa gonām ||

As such, O Asvins, find for me my share of new-presented gifts, As Kasu, Cedi's son, gave me a hundred head of buffaloes, and ten thousand kine.

यो मे हिरण्यसंदृशो दश राज्ञो अमंहत। अधस्पदा इच्चैद्यस्य कृष्टयश्चर्मम्ना अभितो जनाः॥

yo me hiraṇyasaṁdṛśo daśa rājño amaṁhata | adhaspadā iccaidyasya kṛṣṭayaścarmamnā abhito janāḥ ||

He who hath given me for mine own ten Kings like gold to look upon. At Caidya's feet are all the people round about, all those who think upon the shield.

माकिरेना पथा गाद्येनेमे यन्ति चेदयः। अन्यो नेत्सूरिरोहते भूरिदावत्तरो जनः॥

mākirenā pathā gādyeneme yanti cedayaḥ | anyo netsūrirohate bhūridāvattaro janaḥ ||

No man, not any, goes upon the path on which the Cedis walk. No other prince, no folk is held more liberal of gifts than they.
