सूक्त २

इदं वसो सुतमन्धः पिबा सुपूर्णमुदरम्। अनाभयिन्ररिमा ते॥

idaṁ vaso sutamandhaḥ pibā supūrṇamudaram | anābhayinrarimā te ||

HERE is the Soma juice expressed; O Vasu, drink till thou art full: Undaunted God, we give it thee.

नृभिर्धूतः सुतो अश्नैरव्यो वारैः परिपूतः। अश्वो न निक्तो नदीषु॥

nṛbhirdhūtaḥ suto aśnairavyo vāraiḥ paripūtaḥ | aśvo na nikto nadīṣu ||

Washed by the men, pressed out with stones, strained through the filter made of wool, 'Tis like a courser bathed in stream.

तं ते यवं यथा गोभिः स्वादुमकर्म श्रीणन्तः। इन्द्र त्वास्मिन्सधमादे॥

taṁ te yavaṁ yathā gobhiḥ svādumakarma śrīṇantaḥ | indra tvāsminsadhamāde ||

This juice have we made sweet for thee like barley, blending it with milk. Indra, I call thee to our feast.

इन्द्र इत्सोमपा एक इन्द्रः सुतपा विश्वायुः। अन्तर्देवान्मर्त्याँश्च॥

indra itsomapā eka indraḥ sutapā viśvāyuḥ | antardevānmartyāśca ||

Beloved of all, Indra alone drinks up the flowing Soma juice Among the Gods andmortal men.

न यं शुक्रो न दुराशीर्न तृप्रा उरुव्यचसम्। अपस्पृण्वते सुहार्दम्॥

na yaṁ śukro na durāśīrna tṛprā uruvyacasam | apaspṛṇvate suhārdam ||

The Friend, whom not the brilliant-hued, the badly-mixt or bitter draught, Repels, the far-extending God;

गोभिर्यदीमन्ये अस्मन्मृगं न व्रा मृगयन्ते। अभित्सरन्ति धेनुभिः॥

gobhiryadīmanye asmanmṛgaṁ na vrā mṛgayante | abhitsaranti dhenubhiḥ ||

While other men than we with milk chase him as hunters chase a deer, And with their kine inveigle him.

त्रय इन्द्रस्य सोमाः सुतासः सन्तु देवस्य। स्वे क्षये सुतपाव्नः॥

traya indrasya somāḥ sutāsaḥ santu devasya | sve kṣaye sutapāvnaḥ ||

For him, for Indra, for the God, be pressed three draughts of Soma juice In the juice-drinker's own abode.

त्रयः कोशासः श्चोतन्ति तिस्रश्चम्वः सुपूर्णाः। समाने अधि भार्मन्॥

trayaḥ kośāsaḥ ścotanti tisraścamvaḥ supūrṇāḥ | samāne adhi bhārman ||

Three reservoirs exude their drops, filled are three beakers to the brim, All for one offering to the God.

शुचिरसि पुरुनिःष्ठाः क्षीरैर्मध्यत आशीर्तः। दध्ना मन्दिष्ठः शूरस्य॥

śucirasi puruniḥṣṭhāḥ kṣīrairmadhyata āśīrtaḥ | dadhnā mandiṣṭhaḥ śūrasya ||

Pure art thou, set in many a place, and blended in the midst with milk And curd, to cheer the Hero best.

इमे त इन्द्र सोमास्तीव्रा अस्मे सुतासः। शुक्रा आशिरं याचन्ते॥

ime ta indra somāstīvrā asme sutāsaḥ | śukrā āśiraṁ yācante ||

Here, Indra, are thy Soma-draughts pressed out by us, the strong, the pure: They crave admixture of the milk.

ताँ आशिरं पुरोळाशमिन्द्रेमं सोमं श्रीणीहि। रेवन्तं हि त्वा शृणोमि॥

tā āśiraṁ puroḻāśamindremaṁ somaṁ śrīṇīhi | revantaṁ hi tvā śṛṇomi ||

O Indra, pour in milk, prepare the cake, and mix the Soma-draught. I hear them say that thou art rich.

हृत्सु पीतासो युध्यन्ते दुर्मदासो न सुरायाम्। ऊधर्न नग्ना जरन्ते॥

hṛtsu pītāso yudhyante durmadāso na surāyām | ūdharna nagnā jarante ||

Quaffed juices fight within the breast. The drunken praise not by their wine, The naked praise not when it rains.

रेवाँ इद्रेवतः स्तोता स्यात्त्वावतो मघोनः। प्रेदु हरिवः श्रुतस्य॥

revā idrevataḥ stotā syāttvāvato maghonaḥ | predu harivaḥ śrutasya ||

Rich be the praiser of one rich, munificent and famed like thee: High rank be his, O Lord of Bays.

उक्थं चन शस्यमानमगोररिरा चिकेत। न गायत्रं गीयमानम्॥

ukthaṁ cana śasyamānamagorarirā ciketa | na gāyatraṁ gīyamānam ||

Foe of the man who adds no milk, he heeds not any chanted hymn Or holy psalm that may he sung.

मा न इन्द्र पीयत्नवे मा शर्धते परा दाः। शिक्षा शचीवः शचीभिः॥

mā na indra pīyatnave mā śardhate parā dāḥ | śikṣā śacīvaḥ śacībhiḥ ||

Give us not, Indra, as a prey unto the scornful or the proud: Help, Mighty One, with power and might.

वयमु त्वा तदिदर्था इन्द्र त्वायन्तः सखायः। कण्वा उक्थेभिर्जरन्ते॥

vayamu tvā tadidarthā indra tvāyantaḥ sakhāyaḥ | kaṇvā ukthebhirjarante ||

This, even this, O Indra, we implore. as thy devoted friends, The Kanvas praise thee with their hymns.

न घेमन्यदा पपन वज्रिन्नपसो नविष्टौ। तवेदु स्तोमं चिकेत॥

na ghemanyadā papana vajrinnapaso naviṣṭau | tavedu stomaṁ ciketa ||

Naught else, O Thunderer, have I praised in the skilled singer's eulogy: On thy land only have I thought.

इच्छन्ति देवाः सुन्वन्तं न स्वप्नाय स्पृहयन्ति। यन्ति प्रमादमतन्द्राः॥

icchanti devāḥ sunvantaṁ na svapnāya spṛhayanti | yanti pramādamatandrāḥ ||

The Gods seek him who presses out the Soma; they desire not sleep They punish sloth unweariedly.

ओ षु प्र याहि वाजेभिर्मा हृणीथा अभ्यस्मान्। महाँ इव युवजानिः॥

o ṣu pra yāhi vājebhirmā hṛṇīthā abhyasmān | mahā iva yuvajāniḥ ||

Come hither swift with gifts of wealth - be not thou angry with us-like A great man with a youthful bride.

मो ष्वद्य दुर्हणावान्सायं करदारे अस्मत्। अश्रीर इव जामाता॥

mo ṣvadya durhaṇāvānsāyaṁ karadāre asmat | aśrīra iva jāmātā ||

Let him not, wrathful with us, spend the evening far from us to-day, Like some unpleasant son-in-law.

विद्मा ह्यस्य वीरस्य भूरिदावरीं सुमतिम्। त्रिषु जातस्य मनांसि॥

vidmā hyasya vīrasya bhūridāvarīṁ sumatim | triṣu jātasya manāṁsi ||

For well we know this Hero's love, most liberal of the boons he gives, His plans whom the three worlds display.

आ तू षिञ्च कण्वमन्तं न घा विद्म शवसानात्। यशस्तरं शतमूतेः॥

ā tū ṣiñca kaṇvamantaṁ na ghā vidma śavasānāt | yaśastaraṁ śatamūteḥ ||

Pour forth the gift which Kanvas bring, for none more glorious do we know Than the Strong Lord with countless aids.

ज्येष्ठेन सोतरिन्द्राय सोमं वीराय शक्राय। भरा पिबन्नर्याय॥

jyeṣṭhena sotarindrāya somaṁ vīrāya śakrāya | bharā pibannaryāya ||

O presser, offer Soma first to Indra, Hero, Sakra, him The Friend of man, that he may drink;

यो वेदिष्ठो अव्यथिष्वश्वावन्तं जरितृभ्यः। वाजं स्तोतृभ्यो गोमन्तम्॥

yo vediṣṭho avyathiṣvaśvāvantaṁ jaritṛbhyaḥ | vājaṁ stotṛbhyo gomantam ||

Who, in untroubled ways, is best provider, for his worshippers. Of strength in horses and in kine.

पन्यम्पन्यमित्सोतार आ धावत मद्याय। सोमं वीराय शूराय॥

panyampanyamitsotāra ā dhāvata madyāya | somaṁ vīrāya śūrāya ||

Pressers, for him blend Soma juice, each draught most excellent, for him The Brave, the Hero, for his joy.

पाता वृत्रहा सुतमा घा गमन्नारे अस्मत्। नि यमते शतमूतिः॥

pātā vṛtrahā sutamā ghā gamannāre asmat | ni yamate śatamūtiḥ ||

The Vrtra-slayer drinks the juice. May he who gives a hundred aids Approach, nor stay afar from us.

एह हरी ब्रह्मयुजा शग्मा वक्षतः सखायम्। गीर्भिः श्रुतं गिर्वणसम्॥

eha harī brahmayujā śagmā vakṣataḥ sakhāyam | gīrbhiḥ śrutaṁ girvaṇasam ||

May the strong Bay Steeds, yoked by prayer, bring hither unto us our Friend, Lover of Song, renowned by songs.

स्वादवः सोमा आ याहि श्रीताः सोमा आ याहि। शिप्रिन्नृषीवः शचीवो नायमच्छा सधमादम्॥

svādavaḥ somā ā yāhi śrītāḥ somā ā yāhi | śiprinnṛṣīvaḥ śacīvo nāyamacchā sadhamādam ||

Sweet are the Soma juices, come! Blent are the Soma juices, come! Rsi-like, mighty, fair of cheek, come hither quickly to the feast.

स्तुतश्च यास्त्वा वर्धन्ति महे राधसे नृम्णाय। इन्द्र कारिणं वृधन्तः॥

stutaśca yāstvā vardhanti mahe rādhase nṛmṇāya | indra kāriṇaṁ vṛdhantaḥ ||

And lauds which strengthen thee for great bounty and valour, and exalt Indra who doeth glorious deeds,

गिरश्च यास्ते गिर्वाह उक्था च तुभ्यं तानि। सत्रा दधिरे शवांसि॥

giraśca yāste girvāha ukthā ca tubhyaṁ tāni | satrā dadhire śavāṁsi ||

And songs to thee who lovest song, and all those hymns addressed to thee- These evermore confirm thy might.

एवेदेष तुविकूर्मिर्वाजाँ एको वज्रहस्तः। सनादमृक्तो दयते॥

evedeṣa tuvikūrmirvājā eko vajrahastaḥ | sanādamṛkto dayate ||

Thus he, sole doer of great deeds whose hand holds thunder, gives us strength, He who hath never been subdued.

हन्ता वृत्रं दक्षिणेनेन्द्रः पुरू पुरुहूतः। महान्महीभिः शचीभिः॥

hantā vṛtraṁ dakṣiṇenendraḥ purū puruhūtaḥ | mahānmahībhiḥ śacībhiḥ ||

Vrtra he slays with his right hand, even Indra, great with mighty power, And much-invoked in many a place.

यस्मिन्विश्वाश्चर्षणय उत च्यौत्ना ज्रयांसि च। अनु घेन्मन्दी मघोनः॥

yasminviśvāścarṣaṇaya uta cyautnā jrayāṁsi ca | anu ghenmandī maghonaḥ ||

He upon whom all men depend, all regions, all achievements, he Takes pleasure in our wealthy chiefs.

एष एतानि चकारेन्द्रो विश्वा योऽति शृण्वे। वाजदावा मघोनाम्॥

eṣa etāni cakārendro viśvā yo'ti śṛṇve | vājadāvā maghonām ||

All this hath he accomplished, yea, Indra, most gloriously renowned, Who gives our wealthy princes strength.

प्रभर्ता रथं गव्यन्तमपाकाच्चिद्यमवति। इनो वसु स हि वोळ्हा॥

prabhartā rathaṁ gavyantamapākāccidyamavati | ino vasu sa hi voḻhā ||

Who drives his chariot seeking spoil, from afar, to him he loves: For swift is he to bring men wealth.

सनिता विप्रो अर्वद्भिर्हन्ता वृत्रं नृभिः शूरः। सत्योऽविता विधन्तम्॥

sanitā vipro arvadbhirhantā vṛtraṁ nṛbhiḥ śūraḥ | satyo'vitā vidhantam ||

The Sage who, winning spoil with steeds, slays Vrtra, Hero with the men, His servant's faithful succourer.

यजध्वैनं प्रियमेधा इन्द्रं सत्राचा मनसा। यो भूत्सोमैः सत्यमद्वा॥

yajadhvainaṁ priyamedhā indraṁ satrācā manasā | yo bhūtsomaiḥ satyamadvā ||

O Priyamedhas, worship with collected mind this Indra whom The Soma hath full well inspired.

गाथश्रवसं सत्पतिं श्रवस्कामं पुरुत्मानम्। कण्वासो गात वाजिनम्॥

gāthaśravasaṁ satpatiṁ śravaskāmaṁ purutmānam | kaṇvāso gāta vājinam ||

Ye Kanvas, sing the Mighty One, Lord of the Brave, who loves renown, All-present, glorified by song.

य ऋते चिद्गास्पदेभ्यो दात्सखा नृभ्यः शचीवान्। ये अस्मिन्काममश्रियन्॥

ya ṛte cidgāspadebhyo dātsakhā nṛbhyaḥ śacīvān | ye asminkāmamaśriyan ||

Strong Friend, who, with no trace of feet, restores the cattle to the men, Who rest their wish and hope on him.

इत्था धीवन्तमद्रिवः काण्वं मेध्यातिथिम्। मेषो भूतोऽभि यन्नयः॥

itthā dhīvantamadrivaḥ kāṇvaṁ medhyātithim | meṣo bhūto'bhi yannayaḥ ||

Shaped as a Ram, Stone-hurler I once thou camest hither to the son Of Kanva, wise Medhyatithi.

शिक्षा विभिन्दो अस्मै चत्वार्ययुता ददत्। अष्टा परः सहस्रा॥

śikṣā vibhindo asmai catvāryayutā dadat | aṣṭā paraḥ sahasrā ||

Vibhindu, thou hast helped this man, giving him thousands four times ten, And afterward eight thousand more.

उत सु त्ये पयोवृधा माकी रणस्य नप्त्या। जनित्वनाय मामहे॥

uta su tye payovṛdhā mākī raṇasya naptyā | janitvanāya māmahe ||

And these twain pouring streams of milk, creative, daughters of delight, For wedlock sake I glorify.
