सूक्त ४५

य आनयत्परावतः सुनीती तुर्वशं यदुम्। इन्द्रः स नो युवा सखा॥

ya ānayatparāvataḥ sunītī turvaśaṁ yadum | indraḥ sa no yuvā sakhā ||

THAT Indra is our youthful Friend, who with his trusty guidance led Turvasa, Yadu from afar.

अविप्रे चिद्वयो दधदनाशुना चिदर्वता। इन्द्रो जेता हितं धनम्॥

avipre cidvayo dadhadanāśunā cidarvatā | indro jetā hitaṁ dhanam ||

Even to the dull and uninspired Indra, gives vital power, and wins Even with slow steed the offered prize.

महीरस्य प्रणीतयः पूर्वीरुत प्रशस्तयः। नास्य क्षीयन्त ऊतयः॥

mahīrasya praṇītayaḥ pūrvīruta praśastayaḥ | nāsya kṣīyanta ūtayaḥ ||

Great are his ways of guiding us, and!nanilbld are Ins eulogies: His kind protections never fail.

सखायो ब्रह्मवाहसेऽर्चत प्र च गायत। स हि नः प्रमतिर्मही॥

sakhāyo brahmavāhase'rcata pra ca gāyata | sa hi naḥ pramatirmahī ||

Friends, sing your psalm and offer praise to him to whom the prayer is brought: For our great Providence is he.

त्वमेकस्य वृत्रहन्नविता द्वयोरसि। उतेदृशे यथा वयम्॥

tvamekasya vṛtrahannavitā dvayorasi | utedṛśe yathā vayam ||

Thou, Slaughterer of Vrtra, art Guardian and Friend of one and two, Yea, of a man like one of us.

नयसीद्वति द्विषः कृणोष्युक्थशंसिनः। नृभिः सुवीर उच्यसे॥

nayasīdvati dviṣaḥ kṛṇoṣyukthaśaṁsinaḥ | nṛbhiḥ suvīra ucyase ||

Beyond men's hate thou leadest us, and givest cause to sing thy praise: Good hero art thou called by men.

ब्रह्माणं ब्रह्मवाहसं गीर्भिः सखायमृग्मियम्। गां न दोहसे हुवे॥

brahmāṇaṁ brahmavāhasaṁ gīrbhiḥ sakhāyamṛgmiyam | gāṁ na dohase huve ||

I call with hymns, as 'twere a cow to milk, the Friend who merits praise, The Brahman who accepts the prayer.

यस्य विश्वानि हस्तयोरूचुर्वसूनि नि द्विता। वीरस्य पृतनाषहः॥

yasya viśvāni hastayorūcurvasūni ni dvitā | vīrasya pṛtanāṣahaḥ ||

Him in whose hands they say are stored all treasures from the days of old, The Hero, conquering in the fight.

वि दृळ्हानि चिदद्रिवो जनानां शचीपते। वृह माया अनानत॥

vi dṛḻhāni cidadrivo janānāṁ śacīpate | vṛha māyā anānata ||

Lord of Strength, Caster of the Stone, destroy the firm forts built by men, And foil their arts, unbending God!

तमु त्वा सत्य सोमपा इन्द्र वाजानां पते। अहूमहि श्रवस्यवः॥

tamu tvā satya somapā indra vājānāṁ pate | ahūmahi śravasyavaḥ ||

Thee, thee as such, O Lord of Power, O Indra, Soma-drinker, true, We, fain for glory, have invoked.

तमु त्वा यः पुरासिथ यो वा नूनं हिते धने। हव्यः स श्रुधी हवम्॥

tamu tvā yaḥ purāsitha yo vā nūnaṁ hite dhane | havyaḥ sa śrudhī havam ||

Such as thou wast of old, and art now to be called on when the prize lies ready, listen to our call.

धीभिरर्वद्भिरर्वतो वाजाँ इन्द्र श्रवाय्यान्। त्वया जेष्म हितं धनम्॥

dhībhirarvadbhirarvato vājā indra śravāyyān | tvayā jeṣma hitaṁ dhanam ||

With hymns and coursers we will gain, Indra, through thee, both steeds and spoil Most glorious, and the proffered prize.

अभूरु वीर गिर्वणो महाँ इन्द्र धने हिते। भरे वितन्तसाय्यः॥

abhūru vīra girvaṇo mahā indra dhane hite | bhare vitantasāyyaḥ ||

Thou, Indra, Lover of the Song, whom men must stir to help, hast been Great in the contest for the prize.

या त ऊतिरमित्रहन्मक्षूजवस्तमासति। तया नो हिनुही रथम्॥

yā ta ūtiramitrahanmakṣūjavastamāsati | tayā no hinuhī ratham ||

Slayer of foes, whatever aid of thine imparts the swiftest course, With that impel our car to speed.

स रथेन रथीतमोऽस्माकेनाभियुग्वना। जेषि जिष्णो हितं धनम्॥

sa rathena rathītamo'smākenābhiyugvanā | jeṣi jiṣṇo hitaṁ dhanam ||

As skilfullest of those who drive the chariot, with our art and aim, O Conqueror, win the proffered prize.

य एक इत्तमु ष्टुहि कृष्टीनां विचर्षणिः। पतिर्जज्ञे वृषक्रतुः॥

ya eka ittamu ṣṭuhi kṛṣṭīnāṁ vicarṣaṇiḥ | patirjajñe vṛṣakratuḥ ||

Praise him who, Matchless and Alone, was born the Lord of living men, Most active, with heroic soul.

यो गृणतामिदासिथापिरूती शिवः सखा। स त्वं न इन्द्र मृळय॥

yo gṛṇatāmidāsithāpirūtī śivaḥ sakhā | sa tvaṁ na indra mṛḻaya ||

Thou who hast been the singers' Friend, a Friend auspicious with thine aid, As such, O Indra, favour us.

धिष्व वज्रं गभस्त्यो रक्षोहत्याय वज्रिवः। सासहीष्ठा अभि स्पृधः॥

dhiṣva vajraṁ gabhastyo rakṣohatyāya vajrivaḥ | sāsahīṣṭhā abhi spṛdhaḥ ||

Grasp in thine arms the thunderbolt, O Thunder-armed, to slay the fiends: Mayst thou subdue the foemen's host.

प्रत्नं रयीणां युजं सखायं कीरिचोदनम्। ब्रह्मवाहस्तमं हुवे॥

pratnaṁ rayīṇāṁ yujaṁ sakhāyaṁ kīricodanam | brahmavāhastamaṁ huve ||

I call the ancient Friend, allied with wealth, who speeds the lowly man, Him to whom chiefly prayer is brought.

स हि विश्वानि पार्थिवाँ एको वसूनि पत्यते। गिर्वणस्तमो अध्रिगुः॥

sa hi viśvāni pārthivā eko vasūni patyate | girvaṇastamo adhriguḥ ||

For he alone is Lord of all the treasures of the earth: he speeds Hither, chief Lover of the Song.

स नो नियुद्भिरा पृण कामं वाजेभिरश्विभिः। गोमद्भिर्गोपते धृषत्॥

sa no niyudbhirā pṛṇa kāmaṁ vājebhiraśvibhiḥ | gomadbhirgopate dhṛṣat ||

So with thy yoked teams satisfy our wish with power and wealth in steeds And cattle, boldly, Lord of kine!

तद्वो गाय सुते सचा पुरुहूताय सत्वने। शं यद्गवे न शाकिने॥

tadvo gāya sute sacā puruhūtāya satvane | śaṁ yadgave na śākine ||

Sing this, what time the ' juice is pressed, to him your Hero, Much-invoked, To please him as a mighty Steer.

न घा वसुर्नि यमते दानं वाजस्य गोमतः। यत्सीमुप श्रवद्गिरः॥

na ghā vasurni yamate dānaṁ vājasya gomataḥ | yatsīmupa śravadgiraḥ ||

He, Excellent, withholdeth not his gift of power and wealth in kine, When he hath listened to our songs.

कुवित्सस्य प्र हि व्रजं गोमन्तं दस्युहा गमत्। शचीभिरप नो वरत्॥

kuvitsasya pra hi vrajaṁ gomantaṁ dasyuhā gamat | śacībhirapa no varat ||

May he with might unclose for us the cow's stall, whosesoe'er it be, To which the Dasyu-slayer goes.

इमा उ त्वा शतक्रतोऽभि प्र णोनुवुर्गिरः। इन्द्र वत्सं न मातरः॥

imā u tvā śatakrato'bhi pra ṇonuvurgiraḥ | indra vatsaṁ na mātaraḥ ||

O Indra Satakratu, these our songs have called aloud to thee, Like mother cows to meet their calves.

दूणाशं सख्यं तव गौरसि वीर गव्यते। अश्वो अश्वायते भव॥

dūṇāśaṁ sakhyaṁ tava gaurasi vīra gavyate | aśvo aśvāyate bhava ||

Hard is thy love to win: thou art a Steer to him who longs for steers: Be to one craving steeds a Steed.

स मन्दस्वा ह्यन्धसो राधसे तन्वा महे। न स्तोतारं निदे करः॥

sa mandasvā hyandhaso rādhase tanvā mahe | na stotāraṁ nide karaḥ ||

Delight thee with the juice we pour for thine own great munificence: Yield not thy singer to reproach.

इमा उ त्वा सुतेसुते नक्षन्ते गिर्वणो गिरः। वत्सं गावो न धेनवः॥

imā u tvā sutesute nakṣante girvaṇo giraḥ | vatsaṁ gāvo na dhenavaḥ ||

These songs with every draught we pour come, Lover of the Song, to thee, As milch-kine hasten to their young

पुरूतमं पुरूणां स्तोतॄणां विवाचि। वाजेभिर्वाजयताम्॥

purūtamaṁ purūṇāṁ stotṝṇāṁ vivāci | vājebhirvājayatām ||

To thee most oft invoked, amid the many singers' rivalry Who beg with all their might for wealth.

अस्माकमिन्द्र भूतु ते स्तोमो वाहिष्ठो अन्तमः। अस्मान्राये महे हिनु॥

asmākamindra bhūtu te stomo vāhiṣṭho antamaḥ | asmānrāye mahe hinu ||

Nearest and most attractive may our laud, O Indra come to thee. Urge thou us on to ample wealth.

अधि बृबुः पणीनां वर्षिष्ठे मूर्धन्नस्थात्। उरुः कक्षो न गाङ्ग्यः॥

adhi bṛbuḥ paṇīnāṁ varṣiṣṭhe mūrdhannasthāt | uruḥ kakṣo na gāṅgyaḥ ||

Brbu hath set himself above the Panis, o'er their highest head, Like the wide bush on Ganga's bank.

यस्य वायोरिव द्रवद्भद्रा रातिः सहस्रिणी। सद्यो दानाय मंहते॥

yasya vāyoriva dravadbhadrā rātiḥ sahasriṇī | sadyo dānāya maṁhate ||

He whose good bounty, thousandfold, swift as the rushing of the wind, Suddenly offers as a gift.

तत्सु नो विश्वे अर्य आ सदा गृणन्ति कारवः। बृबुं सहस्रदातमं सूरिं सहस्रसातमम्॥

tatsu no viśve arya ā sadā gṛṇanti kāravaḥ | bṛbuṁ sahasradātamaṁ sūriṁ sahasrasātamam ||

So all our singers ever praise the pious Brbu's noble deed, Chief, best to give his thousands, best to give a thousand liberal gifts.
