सूक्त २७

किमस्य मदे किम्वस्य पीताविन्द्रः किमस्य सख्ये चकार। रणा वा ये निषदि किं ते अस्य पुरा विविद्रे किमु नूतनासः॥

kimasya made kimvasya pītāvindraḥ kimasya sakhye cakāra | raṇā vā ye niṣadi kiṁ te asya purā vividre kimu nūtanāsaḥ ||

WHAT deed hath Indra done in the wild transport, in quaffing or in friendship with, the Soma? What joys have men of ancient times or recent obtained within the chamber of libation?

सदस्य मदे सद्वस्य पीताविन्द्रः सदस्य सख्ये चकार। रणा वा ये निषदि सत्ते अस्य पुरा विविद्रे सदु नूतनासः॥

sadasya made sadvasya pītāvindraḥ sadasya sakhye cakāra | raṇā vā ye niṣadi satte asya purā vividre sadu nūtanāsaḥ ||

In its wild joy Indra hath proved him faithful, faithful in quaffing, faithful in its friendship. His truth is the delight that in this chamber the men of old and recent times have tasted.

नहि नु ते महिमनः समस्य न मघवन्मघवत्त्वस्य विद्म। न राधसोराधसो नूतनस्येन्द्र नकिर्ददृश इन्द्रियं ते॥

nahi nu te mahimanaḥ samasya na maghavanmaghavattvasya vidma | na rādhasorādhaso nūtanasyendra nakirdadṛśa indriyaṁ te ||

All thy vast power, O Maghavan, we know not, know not the riches of thy full abundance. No one hath seen that might of thine, productive of bounty every day renewed, O Indra.

एतत्त्यत्त इन्द्रियमचेति येनावधीर्वरशिखस्य शेषः। वज्रस्य यत्ते निहतस्य शुष्मात्स्वनाच्चिदिन्द्र परमो ददार॥

etattyatta indriyamaceti yenāvadhīrvaraśikhasya śeṣaḥ | vajrasya yatte nihatasya śuṣmātsvanāccidindra paramo dadāra ||

This one great power of thine our eyes have witnessed, wherewith thou slewest Varasikha's children, When by the force of thy descending thunder, at the mere solund, their boldest was demolished.

वधीदिन्द्रो वरशिखस्य शेषोऽभ्यावर्तिने चायमानाय शिक्षन्। वृचीवतो यद्धरियूपीयायां हन्पूर्वे अर्धे भियसापरो दर्त्॥

vadhīdindro varaśikhasya śeṣo'bhyāvartine cāyamānāya śikṣan | vṛcīvato yaddhariyūpīyāyāṁ hanpūrve ardhe bhiyasāparo dart ||

In aid of Abhyavartin Cayamana, Indra destroyed the seed of Varasikha. At Hariyupiya he smote the vanguard of the Vrcivans, and the rear fled frighted.

त्रिंशच्छतं वर्मिण इन्द्र साकं यव्यावत्यां पुरुहूत श्रवस्या। वृचीवन्तः शरवे पत्यमानाः पात्रा भिन्दाना न्यर्थान्यायन्॥

triṁśacchataṁ varmiṇa indra sākaṁ yavyāvatyāṁ puruhūta śravasyā | vṛcīvantaḥ śarave patyamānāḥ pātrā bhindānā nyarthānyāyan ||

Three thousand, mailed, in quest of fame, together, on the Yavyavati, O much-sought Indra, Vrcivan's sons, falling before the arrow, like bursting vessels went to their destruction.

यस्य गावावरुषा सूयवस्यू अन्तरू षु चरतो रेरिहाणा। स सृञ्जयाय तुर्वशं परादाद्वृचीवतो दैववाताय शिक्षन्॥

yasya gāvāvaruṣā sūyavasyū antarū ṣu carato rerihāṇā | sa sṛñjayāya turvaśaṁ parādādvṛcīvato daivavātāya śikṣan ||

He, whose two red Steers, seeking goodly pasture, plying their tongues move on 'twixt earth and heaven, Gave Turvasa to Srnjaya, and, to aid him, gave the Vrcivans up to Daivavata.

द्वयाँ अग्ने रथिनो विंशतिं गा वधूमतो मघवा मह्यं सम्राट्। अभ्यावर्ती चायमानो ददाति दूणाशेयं दक्षिणा पार्थवानाम्॥

dvayā agne rathino viṁśatiṁ gā vadhūmato maghavā mahyaṁ samrāṭ | abhyāvartī cāyamāno dadāti dūṇāśeyaṁ dakṣiṇā pārthavānām ||

Two wagon-teams, with damsels, twenty oxen, O Agni, Abhydvartin Cayamdna, The liberal Sovran, giveth me. This guerdon of Prthu's seed is hard to win from others.
