सूक्त ५१

इदमु त्यत्पुरुतमं पुरस्ताज्ज्योतिस्तमसो वयुनावदस्थात्। नूनं दिवो दुहितरो विभातीर्गातुं कृणवन्नुषसो जनाय॥

idamu tyatpurutamaṁ purastājjyotistamaso vayunāvadasthāt | nūnaṁ divo duhitaro vibhātīrgātuṁ kṛṇavannuṣaso janāya ||

FORTH from the darkness in the region eastward this most abundant splendid light hatb mounted. Now verily the far-refulgent Mornings, Daughters of Heaven, bring welfare to the people.

अस्थुरु चित्रा उषसः पुरस्तान्मिता इव स्वरवोऽध्वरेषु। व्यू व्रजस्य तमसो द्वारोच्छन्तीरव्रञ्छुचयः पावकाः॥

asthuru citrā uṣasaḥ purastānmitā iva svaravo'dhvareṣu | vyū vrajasya tamaso dvārocchantīravrañchucayaḥ pāvakāḥ ||

The richly-coloured Dawns have mounted eastward, like pillars planted at our sacrifices, And, flushing far, splendid and purifying, unbarred the portals of the fold of darkness.

उच्छन्तीरद्य चितयन्त भोजान्राधोदेयायोषसो मघोनीः। अचित्रे अन्तः पणयः ससन्त्वबुध्यमानास्तमसो विमध्ये॥

ucchantīradya citayanta bhojānrādhodeyāyoṣaso maghonīḥ | acitre antaḥ paṇayaḥ sasantvabudhyamānāstamaso vimadhye ||

Dispelling gloom this day the wealthy Mornings urge liberal givers to present their treasures. In the unlightened depth of darkness round them let niggard traffickers sleep unawakened.

कुवित्स देवीः सनयो नवो वा यामो बभूयादुषसो वो अद्य। येना नवग्वे अङ्गिरे दशग्वे सप्तास्ये रेवती रेवदूष॥

kuvitsa devīḥ sanayo navo vā yāmo babhūyāduṣaso vo adya | yenā navagve aṅgire daśagve saptāsye revatī revadūṣa ||

O Goddesses, is this your car, I ask you, ancient this day, or is it new, ye Mornings, Wherewith, rich Dawns, ye seek with wealth Navagva, Dasagva Angira, the seven-toned singer?

यूयं हि देवीरृतयुग्भिरश्वैः परिप्रयाथ भुवनानि सद्यः। प्रबोधयन्तीरुषसः ससन्तं द्विपाच्चतुष्पाच्चरथाय जीवम्॥

yūyaṁ hi devīrṛtayugbhiraśvaiḥ pariprayātha bhuvanāni sadyaḥ | prabodhayantīruṣasaḥ sasantaṁ dvipāccatuṣpāccarathāya jīvam ||

With horses harnessed by eternal Order, Goddesses, swiftly round the worlds ye travel, Arousing from their rest, O Dawns, the sleeping, and all that lives, man, bird, and beast, to motion.

क्व स्विदासां कतमा पुराणी यया विधाना विदधुरृभूणाम्। शुभं यच्छुभ्रा उषसश्चरन्ति न वि ज्ञायन्ते सदृशीरजुर्याः॥

kva svidāsāṁ katamā purāṇī yayā vidhānā vidadhurṛbhūṇām | śubhaṁ yacchubhrā uṣasaścaranti na vi jñāyante sadṛśīrajuryāḥ ||

Which among these is eldest, and where is she through whom they fixed the Rbhus' regulations? What time the splendid Dawns go forth for splendour, they are not known aparto alike, unwasting.

ता घा ता भद्रा उषसः पुरासुरभिष्टिद्युम्ना ऋतजातसत्याः। यास्वीजानः शशमान उक्थैः स्तुवञ्छंसन्द्रविणं सद्य आप॥

tā ghā tā bhadrā uṣasaḥ purāsurabhiṣṭidyumnā ṛtajātasatyāḥ | yāsvījānaḥ śaśamāna ukthaiḥ stuvañchaṁsandraviṇaṁ sadya āpa ||

Blest were these Dawns of old, shining with succour, true with the truth that springs from holy Order; With whom the toiling worshipper, by praises, hymning and lauding, soon attained to riches.

ता आ चरन्ति समना पुरस्तात्समानतः समना पप्रथानाः। ऋतस्य देवीः सदसो बुधाना गवां न सर्गा उषसो जरन्ते॥

tā ā caranti samanā purastātsamānataḥ samanā paprathānāḥ | ṛtasya devīḥ sadaso budhānā gavāṁ na sargā uṣaso jarante ||

Hither from eastward all at once they travel, from one place spreading in the selfsame manner. Awaking, from the seat of holy Order the Godlike Dawns come nigh like troops of cattle.

ता इन्न्वेव समना समानीरमीतवर्णा उषसश्चरन्ति। गूहन्तीरभ्वमसितं रुशद्भिः शुक्रास्तनूभिः शुचयो रुचानाः॥

tā innveva samanā samānīramītavarṇā uṣasaścaranti | gūhantīrabhvamasitaṁ ruśadbhiḥ śukrāstanūbhiḥ śucayo rucānāḥ ||

Thus they go forth with undiminished colours, these Mornings similar, in self-same fashion, Concealing the gigantic might of darkness with radiant bodies bright and pure and shining.

रयिं दिवो दुहितरो विभातीः प्रजावन्तं यच्छतास्मासु देवीः। स्योनादा वः प्रतिबुध्यमानाः सुवीर्यस्य पतयः स्याम॥

rayiṁ divo duhitaro vibhātīḥ prajāvantaṁ yacchatāsmāsu devīḥ | syonādā vaḥ pratibudhyamānāḥ suvīryasya patayaḥ syāma ||

O Goddesses, O Heaven's refulgent Daughters, bestow upon us wealth with store of children. As from our pleasant place of rest ye rouse us may we be masters of heroic vigour.

तद्वो दिवो दुहितरो विभातीरुप ब्रुव उषसो यज्ञकेतुः। वयं स्याम यशसो जनेषु तद्द्यौश्च धत्तां पृथिवी च देवी॥

tadvo divo duhitaro vibhātīrupa bruva uṣaso yajñaketuḥ | vayaṁ syāma yaśaso janeṣu taddyauśca dhattāṁ pṛthivī ca devī ||

Well-skilled in lore of sacrifice, ye Daughters of Heaven, refulgent Dawns, I thus address you. May we be glorious among the people. May Heaven vouchsafe us this, and Earth the Goddess,
