सूक्त १९

एवा त्वामिन्द्र वज्रिन्नत्र विश्वे देवासः सुहवास ऊमाः। महामुभे रोदसी वृद्धमृष्वं निरेकमिद्वृणते वृत्रहत्ये॥

evā tvāmindra vajrinnatra viśve devāsaḥ suhavāsa ūmāḥ | mahāmubhe rodasī vṛddhamṛṣvaṁ nirekamidvṛṇate vṛtrahatye ||

THEE, verily, O Thunder-wielding Indra, all the Gods here, the Helpers swift to listen, And both the worlds elected, thee the Mighty, High, waxen strong, alone to slaughter Vrtra.

अवासृजन्त जिव्रयो न देवा भुवः सम्राळिन्द्र सत्ययोनिः। अहन्नहिं परिशयानमर्णः प्र वर्तनीररदो विश्वधेनाः॥

avāsṛjanta jivrayo na devā bhuvaḥ samrāḻindra satyayoniḥ | ahannahiṁ pariśayānamarṇaḥ pra vartanīrarado viśvadhenāḥ ||

The Gods, as worn witheld, relaxed their efforts: thou, Indra, born of truth, wast Sovran Ruler. Thou slewest Ahi who besieged the waters, and duggest out their all-supporting channels.

अतृप्णुवन्तं वियतमबुध्यमबुध्यमानं सुषुपाणमिन्द्र। सप्त प्रति प्रवत आशयानमहिं वज्रेण वि रिणा अपर्वन्॥

atṛpṇuvantaṁ viyatamabudhyamabudhyamānaṁ suṣupāṇamindra | sapta prati pravata āśayānamahiṁ vajreṇa vi riṇā aparvan ||

The insatiate one, extended, hard to waken, who slumbered in perpetual sleep, O Indra,- The Dragon stretched against the seven prone rivers, where no joint was, thou rentest with thy thunder.

अक्षोदयच्छवसा क्षाम बुध्नं वार्ण वातस्तविषीभिरिन्द्रः। दृळ्हान्यौभ्नादुशमान ओजोऽवाभिनत्ककुभः पर्वतानाम्॥

akṣodayacchavasā kṣāma budhnaṁ vārṇa vātastaviṣībhirindraḥ | dṛḻhānyaubhnāduśamāna ojo'vābhinatkakubhaḥ parvatānām ||

Indra with might shook earth and her foundation as the wind stirs the water with its fury. Striving, with strength he burst the firm asunder, and tore away the summits of the mountains.

अभि प्र दद्रुर्जनयो न गर्भं रथा इव प्र ययुः साकमद्रयः। अतर्पयो विसृत उब्ज ऊर्मीन्त्वं वृताँ अरिणा इन्द्र सिन्धून्॥

abhi pra dadrurjanayo na garbhaṁ rathā iva pra yayuḥ sākamadrayaḥ | atarpayo visṛta ubja ūrmīntvaṁ vṛtā ariṇā indra sindhūn ||

They ran to thee as mothers to their offspring: the clouds, like chariots, hastened forth together. Thou didst refresh the streams and force the billows: thou, Indra, settest free obstructed rivers.

त्वं महीमवनिं विश्वधेनां तुर्वीतये वय्याय क्षरन्तीम्। अरमयो नमसैजदर्णः सुतरणाँ अकृणोरिन्द्र सिन्धून्॥

tvaṁ mahīmavaniṁ viśvadhenāṁ turvītaye vayyāya kṣarantīm | aramayo namasaijadarṇaḥ sutaraṇā akṛṇorindra sindhūn ||

Thou for the sake of Vayya and Turviti didst stay the great stream, flowing, allsustaining: Yea, at their prayer didst check the rushing river and make the floods easy to cross, O Indra.

प्राग्रुवो नभन्वो न वक्वा ध्वस्रा अपिन्वद्युवतीरृतज्ञाः। धन्वान्यज्राँ अपृणक्तृषाणाँ अधोगिन्द्रः स्तर्यो दंसुपत्नीः॥

prāgruvo nabhanvo na vakvā dhvasrā apinvadyuvatīrṛtajñāḥ | dhanvānyajrā apṛṇaktṛṣāṇā adhogindraḥ staryo daṁsupatnīḥ ||

He let the young Maids skilled in Law, unwedded, like fountains, bubbling, flow forth streaming onward. He inundated thirsty plains and deserts, and milked the dry Cows of the mighty master.

पूर्वीरुषसः शरदश्च गूर्ता वृत्रं जघन्वाँ असृजद्वि सिन्धून्। परिष्ठिता अतृणद्बद्बधानाः सीरा इन्द्रः स्रवितवे पृथिव्या॥

pūrvīruṣasaḥ śaradaśca gūrtā vṛtraṁ jaghanvā asṛjadvi sindhūn | pariṣṭhitā atṛṇadbadbadhānāḥ sīrā indraḥ sravitave pṛthivyā ||

Through many a morn and many a lovely autumn, having slain Vrtra, lie set free the rivers. Indra hath set at liberty to wander on earth the streams encompassed pressed together.

वम्रीभिः पुत्रमग्रुवो अदानं निवेशनाद्धरिव आ जभर्थ। व्यन्धो अख्यदहिमाददानो निर्भूदुखच्छित्समरन्त पर्व॥

vamrībhiḥ putramagruvo adānaṁ niveśanāddhariva ā jabhartha | vyandho akhyadahimādadāno nirbhūdukhacchitsamaranta parva ||

Lord of Bay Steeds, thou broughtest from the ant-hill the unwedded damsel's son whom ants were eating. The blind saw clearly, as he grasped the serpent, rose, brake the jar: hisjoints again united.

प्र ते पूर्वाणि करणानि विप्राविद्वाँ आह विदुषे करांसि। यथायथा वृष्ण्यानि स्वगूर्तापांसि राजन्नर्याविवेषीः॥

pra te pūrvāṇi karaṇāni viprāvidvā āha viduṣe karāṁsi | yathāyathā vṛṣṇyāni svagūrtāpāṁsi rājannaryāviveṣīḥ ||

To the wise man, O Sage and Sovran Ruler, the man who knoweth all thine ancient exploits. Hath told these deeds of might as thou hast wrought them, great acts, spontaneous, and to man's advantage.

नू ष्टुत इन्द्र नू गृणान इषं जरित्रे नद्यो न पीपेः। अकारि ते हरिवो ब्रह्म नव्यं धिया स्याम रथ्यः सदासाः॥

nū ṣṭuta indra nū gṛṇāna iṣaṁ jaritre nadyo na pīpeḥ | akāri te harivo brahma navyaṁ dhiyā syāma rathyaḥ sadāsāḥ ||

Now, Indra! lauded, glorified with praises, let powers swell high, like rivers, for the singer. For thee a new hymn, Lord of Bays! is fashioned. May we, car-borne, through song be victors ever.
