सूक्त ९४

इमं स्तोममर्हते जातवेदसे रथमिव सं महेमा मनीषया। भद्रा हि नः प्रमतिरस्य संसद्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

imaṁ stomamarhate jātavedase rathamiva saṁ mahemā manīṣayā | bhadrā hi naḥ pramatirasya saṁsadyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

FOR Jatavedas worthy of our praise will we frame with our mind this eulogy as 'twere a car. For good, in his assembly, is this care of ours. Let us not, in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

यस्मै त्वमायजसे स साधत्यनर्वा क्षेति दधते सुवीर्यम्। स तूताव नैनमश्नोत्यंहतिरग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

yasmai tvamāyajase sa sādhatyanarvā kṣeti dadhate suvīryam | sa tūtāva nainamaśnotyaṁhatiragne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

The man for whom thou sacrificest prospereth, dwelleth without a foe, gaineth heroic might. He waxeth strong, distress never approacheth him. Let us riot, in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

शकेम त्वा समिधं साधया धियस्त्वे देवा हविरदन्त्याहुतम्। त्वमादित्याँ आ वह तान्ह्युश्मस्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

śakema tvā samidhaṁ sādhayā dhiyastve devā haviradantyāhutam | tvamādityā ā vaha tānhyuśmasyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

May we have power to kindle thee. Fulfil our thoughts. In thee the Gods eat the presented offering, Bring hither the Adityas, for we long for them. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

भरामेध्मं कृणवामा हवींषि ते चितयन्तः पर्वणापर्वणा वयम्। जीवातवे प्रतरं साधया धियोऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

bharāmedhmaṁ kṛṇavāmā havīṁṣi te citayantaḥ parvaṇāparvaṇā vayam | jīvātave prataraṁ sādhayā dhiyo'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

We will bring fuel and prepare burnt offerings, reminding thee at each successive festival. Fulfil our thought that so we may prolong our lives. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

विशां गोपा अस्य चरन्ति जन्तवो द्विपच्च यदुत चतुष्पदक्तुभिः। चित्रः प्रकेत उषसो महाँ अस्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

viśāṁ gopā asya caranti jantavo dvipacca yaduta catuṣpadaktubhiḥ | citraḥ praketa uṣaso mahā asyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

His ministers move forth, the guardians of the folk, protecting quadruped and biped with their rays. Mighty art thou, the wondrous herald of the Dawn. Let us not in thy friend. ship, Agni, suffer harm.

त्वमध्वर्युरुत होतासि पूर्व्यः प्रशास्ता पोता जनुषा पुरोहितः। विश्वा विद्वाँ आर्त्विज्या धीर पुष्यस्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

tvamadhvaryuruta hotāsi pūrvyaḥ praśāstā potā januṣā purohitaḥ | viśvā vidvā ārtvijyā dhīra puṣyasyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

Thou art Presenter and the chief Invoker, thou Director, Purifier, great High Priest by birth. Knowing all priestly work thou perfectest it, Sage. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

यो विश्वतः सुप्रतीकः सदृङ्ङसि दूरे चित्सन्तळिदिवाति रोचसे। रात्र्याश्चिदन्धो अति देव पश्यस्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

yo viśvataḥ supratīkaḥ sadṛṅṅasi dūre citsantaḻidivāti rocase | rātryāścidandho ati deva paśyasyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

Lovely of form art thou, alike on every side; though far, thou shinest brightly as if close at hand. O God, thou seest through even the dark of night. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

पूर्वो देवा भवतु सुन्वतो रथोऽस्माकं शंसो अभ्यस्तु दूढ्यः। तदा जानीतोत पुष्यता वचोऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

pūrvo devā bhavatu sunvato ratho'smākaṁ śaṁso abhyastu dūḍhyaḥ | tadā jānītota puṣyatā vaco'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

Gods, foremost he his car who pours libations out, and let our hymn prevail o'er evil-hearted men. Attend to this our speech and make it prosper well. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

वधैर्दुःशंसाँ अप दूढ्यो जहि दूरे वा ये अन्ति वा के चिदत्रिणः। अथा यज्ञाय गृणते सुगं कृध्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

vadhairduḥśaṁsā apa dūḍhyo jahi dūre vā ye anti vā ke cidatriṇaḥ | athā yajñāya gṛṇate sugaṁ kṛdhyagne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

Smite with thy weapons those of evil speech and thought, devouring demons, whether near or tar away. Then to the singer give free way for sacrifice. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

यदयुक्था अरुषा रोहिता रथे वातजूता वृषभस्येव ते रवः। आदिन्वसि वनिनो धूमकेतुनाग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

yadayukthā aruṣā rohitā rathe vātajūtā vṛṣabhasyeva te ravaḥ | ādinvasi vanino dhūmaketunāgne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

When to thy chariot thou hadst yoked two red steeds and two ruddy steeds, wind-sped, thy roar was like a bull's. Thou with smoke-bannered flame attackest forest trees. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

अध स्वनादुत बिभ्युः पतत्रिणो द्रप्सा यत्ते यवसादो व्यस्थिरन्। सुगं तत्ते तावकेभ्यो रथेभ्योऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

adha svanāduta bibhyuḥ patatriṇo drapsā yatte yavasādo vyasthiran | sugaṁ tatte tāvakebhyo rathebhyo'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

Then at thy roar the very birds are terrified, when, eating-up the grass, thy sparks fly forth abroad. Then is it easy for thee and thy car to pass. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

अयं मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धायसेऽवयातां मरुतां हेळो अद्भुतः। मृळा सु नो भूत्वेषां मनः पुनरग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

ayaṁ mitrasya varuṇasya dhāyase'vayātāṁ marutāṁ heḻo adbhutaḥ | mṛḻā su no bhūtveṣāṁ manaḥ punaragne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

He hath the Power to soothe Mitra and Varuna: wonderful is the Maruts' wrath when they descend. Be gracious; let their hearts he turned to us again. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

देवो देवानामसि मित्रो अद्भुतो वसुर्वसूनामसि चारुरध्वरे। शर्मन्स्याम तव सप्रथस्तमेऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

devo devānāmasi mitro adbhuto vasurvasūnāmasi cāruradhvare | śarmansyāma tava saprathastame'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

Thou art a God, thou art the wondrous Friend of Gods, the Vasu of the Vasus, fair in sacrifice. Under, thine own most wide protection may we dwell. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

तत्ते भद्रं यत्समिद्धः स्वे दमे सोमाहुतो जरसे मृळयत्तमः। दधासि रत्नं द्रविणं च दाशुषेऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव॥

tatte bhadraṁ yatsamiddhaḥ sve dame somāhuto jarase mṛḻayattamaḥ | dadhāsi ratnaṁ draviṇaṁ ca dāśuṣe'gne sakhye mā riṣāmā vayaṁ tava ||

This is thy grace that, kindled in thine own abode, invoked with Soma thou soundest forth most benign, Thou givest wealth and treasure to the worshipper. Let us not in thy friendship, Agni, suffer harm.

यस्मै त्वं सुद्रविणो ददाशोऽनागास्त्वमदिते सर्वताता। यं भद्रेण शवसा चोदयासि प्रजावता राधसा ते स्याम॥

yasmai tvaṁ sudraviṇo dadāśo'nāgāstvamadite sarvatātā | yaṁ bhadreṇa śavasā codayāsi prajāvatā rādhasā te syāma ||

To whom thou, Lord of goodly riches, grantest freedom from every sin with perfect wholeness, Whom with good strength thou quikenest, with children and wealth-may we be they, Eternal Being.

स त्वमग्ने सौभगत्वस्य विद्वानस्माकमायुः प्र तिरेह देव। तन्नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्तामदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी उत द्यौः॥

sa tvamagne saubhagatvasya vidvānasmākamāyuḥ pra tireha deva | tanno mitro varuṇo māmahantāmaditiḥ sindhuḥ pṛthivī uta dyauḥ ||

Such, Agni, thou who knowest all good fortune, God, lengthen here the days of our existence. This prayer of ours may Varuna grant, and Mitra, and Aditi and Sindhu, Earth and Heaven.
