सूक्त ८४

असावि सोम इन्द्र ते शविष्ठ धृष्णवा गहि। आ त्वा पृणक्त्विन्द्रियं रजः सूर्यो न रश्मिभिः॥

asāvi soma indra te śaviṣṭha dhṛṣṇavā gahi | ā tvā pṛṇaktvindriyaṁ rajaḥ sūryo na raśmibhiḥ ||

The Soma hath been pressed for thee, O Indra; mightiest, bold One, come. May Indra-vigour fill thee full, as the Sun fills mid-air with rays.

इन्द्रमिद्धरी वहतोऽप्रतिधृष्टशवसम्। ऋषीणां च स्तुतीरुप यज्ञं च मानुषाणाम्॥

indramiddharī vahato'pratidhṛṣṭaśavasam | ṛṣīṇāṁ ca stutīrupa yajñaṁ ca mānuṣāṇām ||

His pair of Tawny Coursers bring Indra of unresisted might Hither to Rsis' songs of praise and sacrifice performed by men.

आ तिष्ठ वृत्रहन्रथं युक्ता ते ब्रह्मणा हरी। अर्वाचीनं सु ते मनो ग्रावा कृणोतु वग्नुना॥

ā tiṣṭha vṛtrahanrathaṁ yuktā te brahmaṇā harī | arvācīnaṁ su te mano grāvā kṛṇotu vagnunā ||

Slayer of Vrtra, mount thy car; thy Bay Steeds have been yoked by prayer. May, with its voice, the pressing-stone draw thine attention hitherward.

इममिन्द्र सुतं पिब ज्येष्ठममर्त्यं मदम्। शुक्रस्य त्वाभ्यक्षरन्धारा ऋतस्य सादने॥

imamindra sutaṁ piba jyeṣṭhamamartyaṁ madam | śukrasya tvābhyakṣarandhārā ṛtasya sādane ||

This poured libation, Indra, drink, immortal, gladdening, excellent. Streams of the bright have flowed to thee here at the seat of holy Law.

इन्द्राय नूनमर्चतोक्थानि च ब्रवीतन। सुता अमत्सुरिन्दवो ज्येष्ठं नमस्यता सहः॥

indrāya nūnamarcatokthāni ca bravītana | sutā amatsurindavo jyeṣṭhaṁ namasyatā sahaḥ ||

Sing glory now to Indra, say to him your solemn eulogies. The drops poured forth have made him glad: pay reverence to his might supreme.

नकिष्ट्वद्रथीतरो हरी यदिन्द्र यच्छसे। नकिष्ट्वानु मज्मना नकिः स्वश्व आनशे॥

nakiṣṭvadrathītaro harī yadindra yacchase | nakiṣṭvānu majmanā nakiḥ svaśva ānaśe ||

When, Indra, thou dost yoke thy Steeds, there is no better charioteer: None hath surpassed thee in thy might, none with good steeds o'ertaken thee.

य एक इद्विदयते वसु मर्ताय दाशुषे। ईशानो अप्रतिष्कुत इन्द्रो अङ्ग॥

ya eka idvidayate vasu martāya dāśuṣe | īśāno apratiṣkuta indro aṅga ||

He who alone bestoweth on mortal man who offereth gifts, The ruler of resistless power, is Indra, sure.

कदा मर्तमराधसं पदा क्षुम्पमिव स्फुरत्। कदा नः शुश्रवद्गिर इन्द्रो अङ्ग॥

kadā martamarādhasaṁ padā kṣumpamiva sphurat | kadā naḥ śuśravadgira indro aṅga ||

When will he trample, like a weed, the man who hath no gift for him? When, verily, will Indra hear our songs of praise?

यश्चिद्धि त्वा बहुभ्य आ सुतावाँ आविवासति। उग्रं तत्पत्यते शव इन्द्रो अङ्ग॥

yaściddhi tvā bahubhya ā sutāvā āvivāsati | ugraṁ tatpatyate śava indro aṅga ||

He who with Soma juice prepared amid the many honours thee,- Verily Indra gains thereby tremendous might.

स्वादोरित्था विषूवतो मध्वः पिबन्ति गौर्यः। या इन्द्रेण सयावरीर्वृष्णा मदन्ति शोभसे वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम्॥

svādoritthā viṣūvato madhvaḥ pibanti gauryaḥ | yā indreṇa sayāvarīrvṛṣṇā madanti śobhase vasvīranu svarājyam ||

The juice of Soma thus diffused, sweet to the taste, the bright cows drink, Who for the sake of splendour close to mighty Indra's side rejoice, good in their own supremacy.

ता अस्य पृशनायुवः सोमं श्रीणन्ति पृश्नयः। प्रिया इन्द्रस्य धेनवो वज्रं हिन्वन्ति सायकं वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम्॥

tā asya pṛśanāyuvaḥ somaṁ śrīṇanti pṛśnayaḥ | priyā indrasya dhenavo vajraṁ hinvanti sāyakaṁ vasvīranu svarājyam ||

Craving his touch the dappled kine mingle the Soma with their milk. The milch-kine dear to Indra send forth his death-dealing thunderbolt, good in their own supremacy.

ता अस्य नमसा सहः सपर्यन्ति प्रचेतसः। व्रतान्यस्य सश्चिरे पुरूणि पूर्वचित्तये वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम्॥

tā asya namasā sahaḥ saparyanti pracetasaḥ | vratānyasya saścire purūṇi pūrvacittaye vasvīranu svarājyam ||

With veneration, passing wise, honouring his victorious might, They follow close his many laws to win them due preeminence, good in their own supremacy.

इन्द्रो दधीचो अस्थभिर्वृत्राण्यप्रतिष्कुतः। जघान नवतीर्नव॥

indro dadhīco asthabhirvṛtrāṇyapratiṣkutaḥ | jaghāna navatīrnava ||

With bones of Dadhyac for his arms, Indra, resistless in attack, Struck nine-and-ninety Vrtras dead.

इच्छन्नश्वस्य यच्छिरः पर्वतेष्वपश्रितम्। तद्विदच्छर्यणावति॥

icchannaśvasya yacchiraḥ parvateṣvapaśritam | tadvidaccharyaṇāvati ||

He, searching for the horse's head, removed among the mountains, found At Suryanavan what he sought.

अत्राह गोरमन्वत नाम त्वष्टुरपीच्यम्। इत्था चन्द्रमसो गृहे॥

atrāha goramanvata nāma tvaṣṭurapīcyam | itthā candramaso gṛhe ||

Then verily they recognized the essential form of Tvastar's Bull, Here in the mansion of the Moon.

को अद्य युङ्क्ते धुरि गा ऋतस्य शिमीवतो भामिनो दुर्हृणायून्। आसन्निषून्हृत्स्वसो मयोभून्य एषां भृत्यामृणधत्स जीवात्॥

ko adya yuṅkte dhuri gā ṛtasya śimīvato bhāmino durhṛṇāyūn | āsanniṣūnhṛtsvaso mayobhūnya eṣāṁ bhṛtyāmṛṇadhatsa jīvāt ||

Who yokes to-day unto the pole of Order the strong and passionate steers of checkless spirit, With shaft-armed mouths, heart-piercing, health-bestowing? Long shall he live who richly pays their service.

क ईषते तुज्यते को बिभाय को मंसते सन्तमिन्द्रं को अन्ति। कस्तोकाय क इभायोत रायेऽधि ब्रवत्तन्वे को जनाय॥

ka īṣate tujyate ko bibhāya ko maṁsate santamindraṁ ko anti | kastokāya ka ibhāyota rāye'dhi bravattanve ko janāya ||

Who fleeth forth? who suffereth? who feareth? Who knoweth Indra present, Indra near us? Who sendeth benediction on his offspring, his household, wealth and person, and the People?

को अग्निमीट्टे हविषा घृतेन स्रुचा यजाता ऋतुभिर्ध्रुवेभिः। कस्मै देवा आ वहानाशु होम को मंसते वीतिहोत्रः सुदेवः॥

ko agnimīṭṭe haviṣā ghṛtena srucā yajātā ṛtubhirdhruvebhiḥ | kasmai devā ā vahānāśu homa ko maṁsate vītihotraḥ sudevaḥ ||

Who with poured oil and offering honours Agni, with ladle worships at appointed seasons? To whom to the Gods bring oblation quickly? What offerer, God-favoured, knows him thoroughly?

त्वमङ्ग प्र शंसिषो देवः शविष्ठ मर्त्यम्। न त्वदन्यो मघवन्नस्ति मर्डितेन्द्र ब्रवीमि ते वचः॥

tvamaṅga pra śaṁsiṣo devaḥ śaviṣṭha martyam | na tvadanyo maghavannasti marḍitendra bravīmi te vacaḥ ||

Thou as a God, O Mightiest, verily blessest mortal man. O Maghavan, there is no comforter but thou: Indra, I speak my words to thee.

मा ते राधांसि मा त ऊतयो वसोऽस्मान्कदा चना दभन्। विश्वा च न उपमिमीहि मानुष वसूनि चर्षणिभ्य आ॥

mā te rādhāṁsi mā ta ūtayo vaso'smānkadā canā dabhan | viśvā ca na upamimīhi mānuṣa vasūni carṣaṇibhya ā ||

Let not thy bounteous gifts, let not thy saving help fail us, good Lord, at any time; And measure out to us, thou lover of mankind, all riches hitherward from men.
