सूक्त ६४

वृष्णे शर्धाय सुमखाय वेधसे नोधः सुवृक्तिं प्र भरा मरुद्भ्यः। अपो न धीरो मनसा सुहस्त्यो गिरः समञ्जे विदथेष्वाभुवः॥

vṛṣṇe śardhāya sumakhāya vedhase nodhaḥ suvṛktiṁ pra bharā marudbhyaḥ | apo na dhīro manasā suhastyo giraḥ samañje vidatheṣvābhuvaḥ ||

BRING for the manly host, wise and majestical, O Nodhas, for the Maruts bring thou a pure gift. I deck my songs as one deft-handed, wise in mind prepares the water that hath power in solemn rites.

ते जज्ञिरे दिव ऋष्वास उक्षणो रुद्रस्य मर्या असुरा अरेपसः। पावकासः शुचयः सूर्या इव सत्वानो न द्रप्सिनो घोरवर्पसः॥

te jajñire diva ṛṣvāsa ukṣaṇo rudrasya maryā asurā arepasaḥ | pāvakāsaḥ śucayaḥ sūryā iva satvāno na drapsino ghoravarpasaḥ ||

They spring to birth, the lofty Ones, the Bulls of Heaven, divine, the youths of Rudra, free from spot and stain; The purifiers, shining brightly even as suns, awful of form like giants, scattering rain-drops down.

युवानो रुद्रा अजरा अभोग्घनो ववक्षुरध्रिगावः पर्वता इव। दृळ्हा चिद्विश्वा भुवनानि पार्थिवा प्र च्यावयन्ति दिव्यानि मज्मना॥

yuvāno rudrā ajarā abhogghano vavakṣuradhrigāvaḥ parvatā iva | dṛḻhā cidviśvā bhuvanāni pārthivā pra cyāvayanti divyāni majmanā ||

Young Rudras, demon-slayers, never growing old, they have waxed, even as mountains, irresistible. They make all beings tremble with their mighty strength, even the very strongest, both of earth and heaven.

चित्रैरञ्जिभिर्वपुषे व्यञ्जते वक्षस्सु रुक्माँ अधि येतिरे शुभे। अंसेष्वेषां नि मिमृक्षुरृष्टयः साकं जज्ञिरे स्वधया दिवो नरः॥

citrairañjibhirvapuṣe vyañjate vakṣassu rukmā adhi yetire śubhe | aṁseṣveṣāṁ ni mimṛkṣurṛṣṭayaḥ sākaṁ jajñire svadhayā divo naraḥ ||

With glittering ornaments they deck them forth for show; for beauty on their breasts they bind their chains of gold. The lances on their shoulders pound to pieces; they were born together, of themselves, the Men of Heaven.

ईशानकृतो धुनयो रिशादसो वातान्विद्युतस्तविषीभिरक्रत। दुहन्त्यूधर्दिव्यानि धूतयो भूमिं पिन्वन्ति पयसा परिज्रयः॥

īśānakṛto dhunayo riśādaso vātānvidyutastaviṣībhirakrata | duhantyūdhardivyāni dhūtayo bhūmiṁ pinvanti payasā parijrayaḥ ||

Loud roarers, giving strength, devourers of the foe, they make the winds, they make the lightnings with their powers. The restless shakers drain the udders of the sky, and ever wandering round fill the earth full with milk.

पिन्वन्त्यपो मरुतः सुदानवः पयो घृतवद्विदथेष्वाभुवः। अत्यं न मिहे वि नयन्ति वाजिनमुत्सं दुहन्ति स्तनयन्तमक्षितम्॥

pinvantyapo marutaḥ sudānavaḥ payo ghṛtavadvidatheṣvābhuvaḥ | atyaṁ na mihe vi nayanti vājinamutsaṁ duhanti stanayantamakṣitam ||

The bounteous Maruts with the fatness dropping milk fill full the waters which avail in solenm rites. They lead, as 'twere, the Strong Horse forth, that it may rain: they milk the thundering, the never- failing spring.

महिषासो मायिनश्चित्रभानवो गिरयो न स्वतवसो रघुष्यदः। मृगा इव हस्तिनः खादथा वना यदारुणीषु तविषीरयुग्ध्वम्॥

mahiṣāso māyinaścitrabhānavo girayo na svatavaso raghuṣyadaḥ | mṛgā iva hastinaḥ khādathā vanā yadāruṇīṣu taviṣīrayugdhvam ||

Mighty, with wondrous power and marvellously bright, selfstrong like mountains, ye glide swiftly on your way. Like the wild elephants ye eat the forests up when ye assume your strength among the bright red flames.

सिंहा इव नानदति प्रचेतसः पिशा इव सुपिशो विश्ववेदसः। क्षपो जिन्वन्तः पृषतीभिरृष्टिभिः समित्सबाधः शवसाहिमन्यवः॥

siṁhā iva nānadati pracetasaḥ piśā iva supiśo viśvavedasaḥ | kṣapo jinvantaḥ pṛṣatībhirṛṣṭibhiḥ samitsabādhaḥ śavasāhimanyavaḥ ||

Exceeding wise they roar like lions mightily, they, all-possessing, are beauteous as antelopes; Stirring the darkness with lances and spotted deer, combined as priests, with serpents' fury through their might.

रोदसी आ वदता गणश्रियो नृषाचः शूराः शवसाहिमन्यवः। आ वन्धुरेष्वमतिर्न दर्शता विद्युन्न तस्थौ मरुतो रथेषु वः॥

rodasī ā vadatā gaṇaśriyo nṛṣācaḥ śūrāḥ śavasāhimanyavaḥ | ā vandhureṣvamatirna darśatā vidyunna tasthau maruto ratheṣu vaḥ ||

Heroes who march in companies, befriending man, with serpents' ire through strength, ye greet the earth and heaven. Upon the seats, O Maruts, of your chariots, upon the cars stands lightning visible as light.

विश्ववेदसो रयिभिः समोकसः सम्मिश्लासस्तविषीभिर्विरप्शिनः। अस्तार इषुं दधिरे गभस्त्योरनन्तशुष्मा वृषखादयो नरः॥

viśvavedaso rayibhiḥ samokasaḥ sammiślāsastaviṣībhirvirapśinaḥ | astāra iṣuṁ dadhire gabhastyoranantaśuṣmā vṛṣakhādayo naraḥ ||

Lords of all riches, dwelling in the home of wealth, endowed with mighty vigour, singers loud of voice, Heroes, of powers infinite, armed with strong men's rings, the archers, they have laid the arrow on their arms.

हिरण्ययेभिः पविभिः पयोवृध उज्जिघ्नन्त आपथ्यो न पर्वतान्। मखा अयासः स्वसृतो ध्रुवच्युतो दुध्रकृतो मरुतो भ्राजदृष्टयः॥

hiraṇyayebhiḥ pavibhiḥ payovṛdha ujjighnanta āpathyo na parvatān | makhā ayāsaḥ svasṛto dhruvacyuto dudhrakṛto maruto bhrājadṛṣṭayaḥ ||

They who with golden fellies make the rain increase drive forward the big clouds like wanderers on the way. Self-moving, brisk, unwearied, they o'erthrow the firm; the Maruts with bright lances make all things to reel.

घृषुं पावकं वनिनं विचर्षणिं रुद्रस्य सूनुं हवसा गृणीमसि। रजस्तुरं तवसं मारुतं गणमृजीषिणं वृषणं सश्चत श्रिये॥

ghṛṣuṁ pāvakaṁ vaninaṁ vicarṣaṇiṁ rudrasya sūnuṁ havasā gṛṇīmasi | rajasturaṁ tavasaṁ mārutaṁ gaṇamṛjīṣiṇaṁ vṛṣaṇaṁ saścata śriye ||

The progeny of Rudra we invoke with prayer, the brisk, the bright, the worshipful, the active Ones To the strong band of Maruts cleave for happiness, the chasers of the sky, impetuous, vigorous.

प्र नू स मर्तः शवसा जनाँ अति तस्थौ व ऊती मरुतो यमावत। अर्वद्भिर्वाजं भरते धना नृभिरापृच्छ्यं क्रतुमा क्षेति पुष्यति॥

pra nū sa martaḥ śavasā janā ati tasthau va ūtī maruto yamāvata | arvadbhirvājaṁ bharate dhanā nṛbhirāpṛcchyaṁ kratumā kṣeti puṣyati ||

Maruts, the man whom ye have guarded with your help, he verily in strength surpasseth all mankind. Spoil with his steeds he gaineth, treasure with his men; he winneth honourable strength and prospereth.

चर्कृत्यं मरुतः पृत्सु दुष्टरं द्युमन्तं शुष्मं मघवत्सु धत्तन। धनस्पृतमुक्थ्यं विश्वचर्षणिं तोकं पुष्येम तनयं शतं हिमाः॥

carkṛtyaṁ marutaḥ pṛtsu duṣṭaraṁ dyumantaṁ śuṣmaṁ maghavatsu dhattana | dhanaspṛtamukthyaṁ viśvacarṣaṇiṁ tokaṁ puṣyema tanayaṁ śataṁ himāḥ ||

O Maruts, to the worshippers give glorious strength invincible in battle, brilliant, bringing wealth, Praiseworthy, known to all men. May we foster well, during a hundred winters, son and progeny.

नू ष्ठिरं मरुतो वीरवन्तमृतीषाहं रयिमस्मासु धत्त। सहस्रिणं शतिनं शूशुवांसं प्रातर्मक्षू धियावसुर्जगम्यात्॥

nū ṣṭhiraṁ maruto vīravantamṛtīṣāhaṁ rayimasmāsu dhatta | sahasriṇaṁ śatinaṁ śūśuvāṁsaṁ prātarmakṣū dhiyāvasurjagamyāt ||

Will ye then, O ye Maruts, grant us riches, durable, rich in men, defying onslaught. A hundred, thousandfold, ever increasing? May he, enriched with prayer, come soon and early.
