सूक्त ४४

अग्ने विवस्वदुषसश्चित्रं राधो अमर्त्य। आ दाशुषे जातवेदो वहा त्वमद्या देवाँ उषर्बुधः॥

agne vivasvaduṣasaścitraṁ rādho amartya | ā dāśuṣe jātavedo vahā tvamadyā devā uṣarbudhaḥ ||

IMMORTAL Jatavedas, thou many-hued fulgent gift of Dawn, Agni, this day to him who pays oblations bring the Gods who waken with the morn.

जुष्टो हि दूतो असि हव्यवाहनोऽग्ने रथीरध्वराणाम्। सजूरश्विभ्यामुषसा सुवीर्यमस्मे धेहि श्रवो बृहत्॥

juṣṭo hi dūto asi havyavāhano'gne rathīradhvarāṇām | sajūraśvibhyāmuṣasā suvīryamasme dhehi śravo bṛhat ||

For thou art offering-bearer and loved messenger, the charioteer of sacrifice: Accordant with the Asvins and with Dawn grant us heroic strength and lofty fame.

अद्या दूतं वृणीमहे वसुमग्निं पुरुप्रियम्। धूमकेतुं भाऋजीकं व्युष्टिषु यज्ञानामध्वरश्रियम्॥

adyā dūtaṁ vṛṇīmahe vasumagniṁ purupriyam | dhūmaketuṁ bhāṛjīkaṁ vyuṣṭiṣu yajñānāmadhvaraśriyam ||

As messenger we choose to-day Agni the good whom many love, Smoke-bannered spreader of the light, at break of day glory of sacrificial rites.

श्रेष्ठं यविष्ठमतिथिं स्वाहुतं जुष्टं जनाय दाशुषे। देवाँ अच्छा यातवे जातवेदसमग्निमीळे व्युष्टिषु॥

śreṣṭhaṁ yaviṣṭhamatithiṁ svāhutaṁ juṣṭaṁ janāya dāśuṣe | devā acchā yātave jātavedasamagnimīḻe vyuṣṭiṣu ||

Him noblest and most youthful, richly worshipped guest, dear to the men who offer gifts, Him, Agni Jatavedas, I beseech at dawn that he may bring the Gods to us.

स्तविष्यामि त्वामहं विश्वस्यामृत भोजन। अग्ने त्रातारममृतं मियेध्य यजिष्ठं हव्यवाहन॥

staviṣyāmi tvāmahaṁ viśvasyāmṛta bhojana | agne trātāramamṛtaṁ miyedhya yajiṣṭhaṁ havyavāhana ||

Thee, Agni, will I glorify, deathless nourisher of the world, Immortal, offering-bearer, meet for sacred food, preserver, best at sacrifice.

सुशंसो बोधि गृणते यविष्ठ्य मधुजिह्वः स्वाहुतः। प्रस्कण्वस्य प्रतिरन्नायुर्जीवसे नमस्या दैव्यं जनम्॥

suśaṁso bodhi gṛṇate yaviṣṭhya madhujihvaḥ svāhutaḥ | praskaṇvasya pratirannāyurjīvase namasyā daivyaṁ janam ||

Tell good things to thy praiser, O most youthful God, as richly worshipped, honey-tongued, And, granting to Praskanva lengthened days of life, show honour to the Heavenly Host.

होतारं विश्ववेदसं सं हि त्वा विश इन्धते। स आ वह पुरुहूत प्रचेतसोऽग्ने देवाँ इह द्रवत्॥

hotāraṁ viśvavedasaṁ saṁ hi tvā viśa indhate | sa ā vaha puruhūta pracetaso'gne devā iha dravat ||

For the men, Agni, kindle thee as all possessor and as Priest; So Agni, much-invoked, bring hither with all speed the Gods, the excellently wise,

सवितारमुषसमश्विना भगमग्निं व्युष्टिषु क्षपः। कण्वासस्त्वा सुतसोमास इन्धते हव्यवाहं स्वध्वर॥

savitāramuṣasamaśvinā bhagamagniṁ vyuṣṭiṣu kṣapaḥ | kaṇvāsastvā sutasomāsa indhate havyavāhaṁ svadhvara ||

At dawn of day, at night, Usas and Savitar, the Asvins, Bhaga, Agni's self: Skilled in fair rites, with Soma poured, the Kanvas light thee, the oblation-wafting God.

पतिर्ह्यध्वराणामग्ने दूतो विशामसि। उषर्बुध आ वह सोमपीतये देवाँ अद्य स्वर्दृशः॥

patirhyadhvarāṇāmagne dūto viśāmasi | uṣarbudha ā vaha somapītaye devā adya svardṛśaḥ ||

For, Agni, Lord of sacrifice and messenger of men art thou: Bring thou the Gods who wake at dawn who see the light, this day to drink the Soma juice.

अग्ने पूर्वा अनूषसो विभावसो दीदेथ विश्वदर्शतः। असि ग्रामेष्वविता पुरोहितोऽसि यज्ञेषु मानुषः॥

agne pūrvā anūṣaso vibhāvaso dīdetha viśvadarśataḥ | asi grāmeṣvavitā purohito'si yajñeṣu mānuṣaḥ ||

Thou shonest forth, O Agni, after former dawns, all visible, O rich in light. Thou art our help in battle-strife, the Friend of inan, the great high priest in sacrifice.

नि त्वा यज्ञस्य साधनमग्ने होतारमृत्विजम्। मनुष्वद्देव धीमहि प्रचेतसं जीरं दूतममर्त्यम्॥

ni tvā yajñasya sādhanamagne hotāramṛtvijam | manuṣvaddeva dhīmahi pracetasaṁ jīraṁ dūtamamartyam ||

Like Manu, we will stablish thee, Agni, performer of the rite, Invoker, ministering Priest, exceeding wise, the swift immortal messenger.

यद्देवानां मित्रमहः पुरोहितोऽन्तरो यासि दूत्यम्। सिन्धोरिव प्रस्वनितास ऊर्मयोऽग्नेर्भ्राजन्ते अर्चयः॥

yaddevānāṁ mitramahaḥ purohito'ntaro yāsi dūtyam | sindhoriva prasvanitāsa ūrmayo'gnerbhrājante arcayaḥ ||

When as the Gods' High Priest, by many loved, thou dost their mission as their nearest Friend, Then, like the far-resounding billows of the flood, thy flames, O Agni, roar aloud.

श्रुधि श्रुत्कर्ण वह्निभिर्देवैरग्ने सयावभिः। आ सीदन्तु बर्हिषि मित्रो अर्यमा प्रातर्यावाणो अध्वरम्॥

śrudhi śrutkarṇa vahnibhirdevairagne sayāvabhiḥ | ā sīdantu barhiṣi mitro aryamā prātaryāvāṇo adhvaram ||

Heat-, Agni, who hast ears to hear, with all thy train of escort Gods; Let Mitra, Aryaman,- seeking betimes our rite, seat them upon the sacred grass.

शृण्वन्तु स्तोमं मरुतः सुदानवोऽग्निजिह्वा ऋतावृधः। पिबतु सोमं वरुणो धृतव्रतोऽश्विभ्यामुषसा सजूः॥

śṛṇvantu stomaṁ marutaḥ sudānavo'gnijihvā ṛtāvṛdhaḥ | pibatu somaṁ varuṇo dhṛtavrato'śvibhyāmuṣasā sajūḥ ||

Let those who strengthen Law, who bountiUly give, the life-tongued Maruts, hear our praise. May Law-supporting Varuna with the Asvins twain and Usas, drink the Soma juice.
